Exodus 33

This is unfamiliar ground to me. The use of אהל, tent, is both for normal tents and for the tent of engagement that KJV calls the tabernacle, and both REB and JB have Tent with a capital T. I don't know whether to make this distinction yet. But some disambiguation may have to be made at some point.

The Pillar of Cloud speaks to Moses and comes to the door of its tent just like everyone else. Hold that thought, I think... We're aren't quite half way through this monumental foreign library. And it may hang together in ways that we cannot anticipate (unless of course we want to be told the score before the end of the game). But... who really knows the score ...

The prior chapter contains the incident of the golden calf, perhaps referred to as the זה of verse 1. The finery or trappings (for the horse of Psalm 32) seems out of the blue, occurring only here in Exodus. Do we build golden calves during the week and then put on our Sunday best? Intransigent scruff (trad. stiff necked) that we are.

to the land that I swore to Abraham, to Yitschaq, and to Jacob, saying, To your seed I will give it.

How did Joshua get into the Tent? Was Moses in the Tent when it says only that he came toward it? And the Presence of the Cloud was at the door. There is something special about Joshua and I haven't got a gloss for it just yet. Perhaps it is as simple as not departing from the tent, but I can't use depart without breaking a rule unnecessarily. and מתוך is stronger than just from. Perhaps it has to do with a synonym of מושׁ, about feeling? Something like but Joshua did not lose the feeling of the experience... Who's got a good suggestion?

It is instructive that given these questions, which I find unanswered in this text, Moses' questions are about presence. They are fundamental existential questions that occur to anyone who seeks seriously. Perhaps then we can reframe the tents, anticipating Paul's identification of tent and body (2 Corinthians 5:1).

פנה, presenceface, or just the preposition before? Which of these might do in the places you find it below? The final verse is telling. Clearly it is not the preposition, but is it presence or face? See is operative. Seeing is what we prefer over hearing. Seeing increases our sense of control. Control is something we do not have. Our self-deception that we do have control leads to violence and idolatry. But we can look, after the presence has passed, and see without dying.

All this passage is self-reflective and independent of sequential logic. Imagine your conversation face to face.
