Numbers 25

Moving right along, not my favorite chapter in spite of the mention of Phineas in Psalm 106, the last poem of the 4th book of the psalms, the final poem on the history in the Psalter.

The final verse in the Hebrew is clearly a half verse, a unique verse in the music that ends the chapter on a subdominant rest.

פִּֽינְחָ֨ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֜ר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן הֵשִׁ֤יב אֶת־חֲמָתִי֙ מֵעַ֣ל בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּקַנְא֥וֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִ֖י בְּתוֹכָ֑ם וְלֹא־כִלִּ֥יתִי אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּקִנְאָתִֽי	11		Phineas child of Eleazar, child of Aaron the priest, has turned away my heat from over the children of Israel when he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so I would not consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.	3e	4C	36 14
לָכֵ֖ן אֱמֹ֑ר הִנְנִ֨י נֹתֵ֥ן ל֛וֹ אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י שָׁלֽוֹם	12		Therefore say, Note me well, giving to him my covenant of peace.	3d	4A	4 11
וְהָ֤יְתָה לּוֹ֙ וּלְזַרְע֣וֹ אַחֲרָ֔יו בְּרִ֖ית כְּהֻנַּ֣ת עוֹלָ֑ם תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֤ר קִנֵּא֙ לֵֽאלֹהָ֔יו וַיְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	13		And it will be for him and his seed after him the covenant of priesthood forever, under which he was jealous for his God, and made a cover-price over the children of Israel.	3e	4C	17 18
וְשֵׁם֩ אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הַמֻּכֶּ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֻכָּה֙ אֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית זִמְרִ֖י בֶּן־סָל֑וּא נְשִׂ֥יא בֵֽית־אָ֖ב לַשִּׁמְעֹנִֽי	14		And the name of the man of Israel that was struck, which was struck with the Midianite woman, was Zimri child of Salu, a principal of the house of the father of Simeon.	3e	4C	23 8
וְשֵׁ֨ם הָֽאִשָּׁ֧ה הַמֻּכָּ֛ה הַמִּדְיָנִ֖ית כָּזְבִּ֣י בַת־צ֑וּר רֹ֣אשׁ אֻמּ֥וֹת בֵּֽית־אָ֛ב בְּמִדְיָ֖ן הֽוּא	15		And the name of the Midianite woman that was struck was Cozby, the daughter of Tyre. The head of the clans of the house of the father of Midian, he is.	3c	4B	16 9
וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר	16		And spoke Yahweh to Moses, saying,	3e	3g	10
צָר֖וֹר אֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים וְהִכִּיתֶ֖ם אוֹתָֽם	17		Trouble the Midianites, and you strike them.	3e	4A	7 6
כִּ֣י צֹרְרִ֥ים הֵם֙ לָכֶ֔ם בְּנִכְלֵיהֶ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־נִכְּל֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם עַל־דְּבַר־פְּע֑וֹר וְעַל־דְּבַ֞ר כָּזְבִּ֨י בַת־נְשִׂ֤יא מִדְיָן֙ אֲחֹתָ֔ם הַמֻּכָּ֥ה בְיוֹם־הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה עַל־דְּבַר־פְּעֽוֹר	18	B	For troubles they are to you in their cunning, with which they were conning you over the matter of Peor, and over the matter of Cozby, the daughter of a principal of Midian, their sister, struck in the day of the plague over the matter of Peor.	3d	4C	21 28
