1 Kings 2

David is candid with Solomon, with some rather astonishing admissions of failure as a father. Bathsheva's intervention is insidious and leads to much bloodshed.

The construction of verse 4 is odd, having two open quotes (לאמר). Joab's daubing of blood (v5) is consistent with the use of נתן for daubing the blood of a sacrifice on the altar.

There is violent work afoot here and no getting around it. Humans are violent in their seizing and establishing of power. The place of Two-Armies  is trad. Mahaniam.

פגע seems to be an understated initial action of the enforcer Benaiah in Solomon's kingdom.

1 And the days of David approached death,
and he commanded Solomon his son, saying,

and daubed the blood of war upon his sash that was on his loins, and on his shoes that were on his feet.
