Ezra 1

The first 2 verses of Ezra reflect the last two verses of Chronicles. The raising of the proclamation is very subdued in the music. The recitation is on the lowest recitation note though the hope is very elevated (line 3 below).

The second to last verse of Chronicles and the first verse of Ezra have identical music:

2 Chr 36:22 = Ezra 1:1

The last verse of Chronicles squeezes another thought into it and so delays the rest point to בִּֽיהוּדָֽה. The shape of verse 2 in Ezra is different with a movement of notes I have not seen before, quietly painting on high reciting notes the decree of Cyrus. Music is difficult to describe in words. If we really want to get to know these Scriptures, we must hear them sung. There is subtlety in the phrasing and character portrayal in the sound. Could we tell the difference in speaker from one musical phrase to another...?

Ezra 1:2

[Update: this is the only verse with this pattern in the first phrase of the music: B revia ,C B zaqen-qatan,C B zaqen-qatan. The next closest is Jeremiah 21:12 which begins: B rev,C B z-q,C. For phrase beginnings, the next closest is Qohelet 3:21. These three are the only ones to begin B rev,C B. There are 30 verses that begin B rev C but they are significantly distinguished afterwards.
