1 Samuel 3

This is unexpected. My grandchildren are here today, and I would not expect to be able to work, but time being what it is, walks, and exploring the garden, and all the activities of grandchildren are done, and still there is a minute to continue reading (especially this chapter, when children are under consideration). Note the recurrence of lessen (כהה), only twice in 1 Samuel. Strange but clearly a word-play.

וַיָּ֣רָץ אֶל־עֵלִ֗י וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הִנְנִי֙ כִּֽי־קָרָ֣אתָ לִּ֔י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לֹֽא־קָרָ֖אתִי שׁ֣וּב שְׁכָ֑ב וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ וַיִּשְׁכָּֽב ס	5		And he raced to Eli, and he said, Here am I, for you called me. And he said, I did not call. Return. Lie down. And he went, and he lay down.	3e	4C	24 7

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הִנֵּ֧ה אָנֹכִ֛י עֹשֶׂ֥ה דָבָ֖ר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ כָּל־שֹׁ֣מְע֔וֹ תְּצִלֶּ֖ינָה שְׁתֵּ֥י אָזְנָֽיו	11		And Yahweh said to Samuel, Behold I am doing a thing in Israel, that all hearing it, both their ears will tingle.	3c	4C	22 13
בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ אָקִ֣ים אֶל־עֵלִ֔י אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ הָחֵ֖ל וְכַלֵּֽה	12		In that day I will raise up to Eli all that I spoke to his house, from start to finish.	3d	4C	19 5
וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי ל֔וֹ כִּֽי־שֹׁפֵ֥ט אֲנִ֛י אֶת־בֵּית֖וֹ עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם בַּעֲוֺ֣ן אֲשֶׁר־יָדַ֗ע כִּֽי־מְקַֽלְלִ֤ים לָהֶם֙ בָּנָ֔יו וְלֹ֥א כִהָ֖ה בָּֽם	13		For I have made it clear to him that I myself have judged his house for evermore, in the iniquity that he knows. For his children made themselves of little account and he did not lessen them.	3d	4C	15 20
וְלָכֵ֥ן נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לְבֵ֣ית עֵלִ֑י אִֽם־יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר עֲוֺ֧ן בֵּית־עֵלִ֛י בְּזֶ֥בַח וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה עַד־עוֹלָֽם	14		And therefore I have sworn of the house of Eli, The iniquity of the house of Eli will not be covered by sacrifice or gifts for evermore.	3c	4B	10 18
וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב שְׁמוּאֵל֙ עַד־הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־דַּלְת֣וֹת בֵּית־יְהוָ֑ה וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל יָרֵ֔א מֵהַגִּ֥יד אֶת־הַמַּרְאָ֖ה אֶל־עֵלִֽי	15		And Samuel lay down till the morning and opened the gateways of the house of Yahweh, and Samuel feared to make clear the apparition to Eli.	3e	4C	19 15
וַיִּקְרָ֤א עֵלִי֙ אֶת־שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל בְּנִ֑י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי	16		And Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my child, and he said, Here am I.	3e	4C	17 6
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָ֤ה הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־נָ֥א תְכַחֵ֖ד מִמֶּ֑נִּי כֹּ֣ה יַעֲשֶׂה־לְּךָ֤ אֱלֹהִים֙ וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֔יף אִם־תְּכַחֵ֤ד מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ דָּבָ֔ר מִכָּל־הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ	17		And he said, What is the word that he spoke to you? Please do not conceal from me. God do thus to you and thus add more, if you conceal from me a word from everything that he spoke to you.	3e	4C	22 34
וַיַּגֶּד־ל֤וֹ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶת־כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א כִחֵ֖ד מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר יְהוָ֣ה ה֔וּא הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינָ֖ו יַעֲשֶֽׂה פ	18		And Samuel made clear to him everything of the words, and nothing did he conceal from him. And he said, It is Yahweh. What is good in his eyes, let him do.	3e	4C	19 15
וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַֽיהוָה֙ הָיָ֣ה עִמּ֔וֹ וְלֹֽא־הִפִּ֥יל מִכָּל־דְּבָרָ֖יו אָֽרְצָה	19		And Samuel grew and Yahweh was with him, and let fall none of his words earthward.	3e	4B	6 16
וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִדָּ֖ן וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֚י נֶאֱמָ֣ן שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל לְנָבִ֖יא לַיהוָֽה	20		And all Israel knew, from Dan and to Beer-Sheva, that Samuel was faithful as a prophet for Yahweh.	3e	4C	15 12
וַיֹּ֥סֶף יְהוָ֖ה לְהֵרָאֹ֣ה בְשִׁלֹ֑ה כִּֽי־נִגְלָ֨ה יְהוָ֧ה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל בְּשִׁל֖וֹ בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה פ	21		And Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh, for Yahweh was disclosed to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Yahweh.	3c	4B	12 17
