1 Chronicles 18 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll
וַיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־כֵ֔ן וַיַּ֥ךְ דָּוִ֛יד אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וַיַּכְנִיעֵ֑ם וַיִּקַּ֛ח אֶת־גַּ֥ת וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ מִיַּ֥ד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים | 1 | And it was after such that David struck the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Gath and her built-up areas from the hand of the Philistines. | 3d | 4A | 18 14
2 | And he struck Moab. And Moab became servants for David, bearing a gift. | 3e | 4C | 5 15
וַיַּ֥ךְ דָּוִ֛יד אֶת־הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־צוֹבָ֖ה חֲמָ֑תָה בְּלֶכְתּ֕וֹ לְהַצִּ֥יב יָד֖וֹ בִּֽנְהַר־פְּרָֽת | 3 | And David struck Hadadezer, the king of Zobah, toward Hamath, as he went to monitor his means by the river Euphrates. | 3d | 4A | 16 12
וַיִּלְכֹּד֩ דָּוִ֨יד מִמֶּ֜נּוּ אֶ֣לֶף רֶ֗כֶב וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ פָּֽרָשִׁ֔ים וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֣ישׁ רַגְלִ֑י וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר דָּוִיד֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָרֶ֔כֶב וַיּוֹתֵ֥ר מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מֵ֥אָה רָֽכֶב | 4 | And David conquered from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand cavalry, and twenty thousand foot-soldiers. And David hamstrung all the chariot-horses, but he left from them a hundred chariots. | 3e | 4C | 29 20
וַיָּבֹא֙ אֲרַ֣ם דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק לַעְז֕וֹר לַהֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר מֶ֣לֶךְ צוֹבָ֑ה וַיַּ֤ךְ דָּוִיד֙ בַּאֲרָ֔ם עֶשְׂרִֽים־וּשְׁנַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף אִֽישׁ | 5 | And when the Aramaeans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer the king of Zobah, David struck among the Aramaeans, twenty two thousand soldiers. | 3e | 4C | 19 14
וַיָּ֤שֶׂם דָּוִיד֙ בַּאֲרַ֣ם דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק וַיְהִ֤י אֲרָם֙ לְדָוִ֔יד עֲבָדִ֖ים נֹשְׂאֵ֣י מִנְחָ֑ה וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע יְהוָה֙ לְדָוִ֔יד בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽךְ | 6 | And David set up in Aram Damascus, and the Aramaeans became servants for David, bearing a gift, and Yahweh made David victorious wherever he went. | 3e | 4C | 25 14
וַיִּקַּ֣ח דָּוִ֗יד אֵ֚ת שִׁלְטֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֔וּ עַ֖ל עַבְדֵ֣י הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם | 7 | And David took the escutcheons of gold that were upon the servants of Hadadezer, and he brought them to Jerusalem. | 3e | 4C | 22 7
וּמִטִּבְחַ֤ת וּמִכּוּן֙ עָרֵ֣י הֲדַדְעֶ֔זֶר לָקַ֥ח דָּוִ֛יד נְחֹ֖שֶׁת רַבָּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד בָּ֣הּ ׀ עָשָׂ֣ה שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה אֶת־יָ֤ם הַנְּחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ וְאֶת־הָֽעַמּוּדִ֔ים וְאֵ֖ת כְּלֵ֥י הַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת | 8 | And from Slaughter and from Base, cities of Hadadezer, David took brass in much abundance. With it Solomon made the sea the brass, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass. | 3d | 4C | 24 24
וַיִּשְׁמַ֕ע תֹּ֖עוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֲמָ֑ת כִּ֚י הִכָּ֣ה דָוִ֔יד אֶת־כָּל־חֵ֖יל הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־צוֹבָֽה | 9 | And Tou, the king of Hamath, heard, that David had struck all the force of Hadadezer the king of Zobah. | 3e | 4C | 9 16
וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח אֶת־הֲדֽוֹרָם־בְּנ֣וֹ אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־דָּ֠וִיד לִשְׁאָל־ל֨וֹ לְשָׁל֜וֹם וּֽלְבָרֲכ֗וֹ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִלְחַ֤ם בַּהֲדַדְעֶ֙זֶר֙ וַיַּכֵּ֔הוּ כִּי־אִ֛ישׁ מִלְחֲמ֥וֹת תֹּ֖עוּ הָיָ֣ה הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר וְכֹ֗ל כְּלֵ֛י זָהָ֥ב וָכֶ֖סֶף וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת | 10 | And he sent Hadoram his son to king David to ask him for peace and to bless him, in that he had warred with Hadadezer and had struck him, (for a man of war Tou was with Hadadezer), and all instruments of gold and silver and brass. | 3d | 4C | 52 12
גַּם־אֹתָ֗ם הִקְדִּ֞ישׁ הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ דָּוִיד֙ לַיהוָ֔ה עִם־הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ וְהַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָשָׂ֖א מִכָּל־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם מֵֽאֱד֤וֹם וּמִמּוֹאָב֙ וּמִבְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וּמִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וּמֵֽעֲמָלֵֽק | 11 | Them also king David sanctified to Yahweh with the silver and the gold that he lifted up from all the nations: from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. | 3e | 4C | 29 21
12 | And Abishai child of Tseruyah struck Edom in the salt gorge, eighteen thousand. | 3e | 4C | 24
וַיָּ֤שֶׂם בֶּֽאֱדוֹם֙ נְצִיבִ֔ים וַיִּהְי֥וּ כָל־אֱד֖וֹם עֲבָדִ֣ים לְדָוִ֑יד וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע יְהוָה֙ אֶת־דָּוִ֔יד בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽךְ | 13 | And he set up monitors in Edom, and all Edom became servants for David. So Yahweh made David victorious wherever he went. | 3e | 4C | 21 14
וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ דָּוִ֖יד עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֗י עֹשֶׂ֛ה מִשְׁפָּ֥ט וּצְדָקָ֖ה לְכָל־עַמּֽוֹ | 14 | And David reigned over all Israel, and judgment and righteousness were done for all his people. | 3d | 4A | 10 13
15 | And Joab, child of Tseruyah, was over the host, and Jehoshaphat, child of Achilud, archivist. | 3e | 4A | 11 10
וְצָד֧וֹק בֶּן־אֲחִיט֛וּב וַאֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ בֶּן־אֶבְיָתָ֖ר כֹּהֲנִ֑ים וְשַׁוְשָׁ֖א סוֹפֵֽר | 16 | And Zadok, child of Achitov, and Abimelek, child of Abiatar, priests, and Shavsha, secretary. | 3c | 4A | 19 5
וּבְנָיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע עַל־הַכְּרֵתִ֖י וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י וּבְנֵי־דָוִ֥יד הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים לְיַ֥ד הַמֶּֽלֶךְ | 17 | And Beniah, child of Jehoiada, was over the Cheretites and the Pelethites, and the children of David were preeminent, handy to the king. | 3e | 4B | 17 12 |
There are lots of small differences between this chapter and the parallel in 2 Samuel 8, up next.
Compare verse 6 - different spellings of words.
Chronicles
Samuel
Compare the names of the cities in verse 8. (See the next post). Note too how the Chronicler knows more than the writer of Samuel.
Or consider how verse 10 leaves out some words. The words can be read into the gap at the caesura. Also the names are slightly different. Tou/Toi, Hadarezer/Hadadezer (an easy misreading of ר for ד.)
Chronicles
Samuel
JB resolves the conflicting name of Toi/Tou without comment. JB footnotes Psalm 60's inscription as the psalm for this incident. Edom and Moab were not to be meddled with according to Exodus 16, but they clearly are a source of trouble (not to mention the gift of Ruth) for David. Perhaps all is not as it seems on the surface.
A lot of questions occur to me as I read this. Was there a gang of rulers? Conflict of interest? (King rules with children). Justice for whom? Subservience? Adulation? Names we might think are righteous may not be so. (We are all cut from the same cloth).
Compare verse 18. David's children were כהנים, priests in 2 Samuel. Here they are only handy to the king. I wonder why KJV suppressed this bald power sharing and JB, the RC Bible, explains it away. REB is blunt and accurate and without explanation, but we never read this passage anyway! NIV has royal advisors. What for! Are we trying to avoid contradiction in the Bible just because we think it should not say what it reads?
Samuel
