Joshua 1

Joshua 1:8, music based on the accents
Here are direct references to Psalm 1 in Joshua. What is the direction of the influence? Confining the comparison to just 3 verses highlights the dependency.

It is clear too that courage (חזך) and assurance (אמץ) are the focus of the first 9 verses. Then in verses 10 to 18 there is commandment and a promising response from the two and 1/2 sceptres (bands), Reuben, Gad and the half of Manasseh. We should identify with and remember the promise. What exactly does this mean, hearing Moses, and now his successor on the border of the land that is promised, the successor after whom Jesus (=Joshua) is named, a name meaning Yahweh saves. The psalm springs to mind, it was not by their own hand... (Psalm 44, a psalm of exile, the first of the corporate laments).

I was a bit stuck for a word for sceptre (שׁבט). One can hardly speak of a half sceptre, a half mace, but what about a band. Tribe I have already used for another root and this time no compromise.
