Hosea 6

A short chapter. I must find some long chapters eventually. Fascinating to me how a distant change will happen. A Psalm I worked with in 2007, Psalm 46, suffered a tweak because of this chapter. The phrase changed was 'in the early morning'. There is always a tension between awkwardness and idiom. I see that early, right early, etc are common, also interpretive phrases like the break of day or the crack of dawn are possible idiomatically, but for me concordance teaches idiom, where idiom masks the foreign sound. So I removed early and replaced it with 'in the face of  the morning'. Now just think what that does for those who need their sleep, like the brain-damaged who cannot face the morning! Or the brightness of those who greet the dawn and the new day with all its chores.

So what did I face this morning? Clear the kitchen, change the bed, do the laundry, make granola, do the dishes, clear the kitchen, make the bed, and finish this short post, (mostly done last night between 11 and midnight). One catches the time wherever possible. Yea for Cinderella.

In this chapter we have again the maturing rain. Perhaps this is the most obvious lesson from the Bible - that we should grow to maturity and put aside the me-first mentality of our youth. You need some power to do this.

Murder is a thing in the heart, as simple as a silent comparison.

Curious where I used 'agenda'? Job 31:11, Psalms 26:10, 119:150 (so far).

Timer has rung for the granola.

לְכוּ֙ וְנָשׁ֣וּבָה אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י ה֥וּא טָרָ֖ף וְיִרְפָּאֵ֑נוּ
יַ֖ךְ וְיַחְבְּשֵֽׁנוּ
1 Come and let us return to Yahweh for he tears and he heals,
he strikes and he binds us up.

יְחַיֵּ֖נוּ מִיֹּמָ֑יִם
בַּיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י יְקִמֵ֖נוּ וְנִחְיֶ֥ה לְפָנָֽיו
2 He will revive us after two days.
On the third day he will raise us up and we will live in his presence.

וְנֵדְעָ֣ה נִרְדְּפָ֗ה לָדַ֙עַת֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה כְּשַׁ֖חַר נָכ֣וֹן מֽוֹצָא֑וֹ
וְיָב֤וֹא כַגֶּ֙שֶׁם֙ לָ֔נוּ כְּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ י֥וֹרֶה אָֽרֶץ
3 And we will know. We will pursue to know Yahweh, as dawn, prepared is his going forth.
And he will come in as the heavy rain to us, as the maturing rain he will instruct earth.

מָ֤ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לְּךָ֙ אֶפְרַ֔יִם מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶׂה־לְּךָ֖ יְהוּדָ֑ה

4 C What will I do for you, Ephraim? What will I do for you, Judah?
For your mercy is as a morning cloud, and as early dew it goes away.

5 Therefore I have hewn by the prophets. I have slain them by the sayings of my mouth,
and your judgments are emerging light.

כִּ֛י חֶ֥סֶד חָפַ֖צְתִּי וְלֹא־זָ֑בַח

6 d For mercy I have delight in, and not sacrifice,
and knowledge of God over burnt offerings.

7 But they were as humans. They go beyond covenant.
There they are treacherous against me.

9 And as raiding parties tarry for someone, a companion of priests, directed, rise up early to murder,
that they may undertake an agenda.

10 House of Israel I have seen a horrendous thing.
There, the prostitution of Ephraim. Defiled is Israel.

when I turn the captivity of my people.
