Verse 1 opens with a verb that has no object and requires one. I do not like the solution that puts 'and he took' at the end of the verse. It violates the principle of rest implied by the accent on Levi. So I am guessing that the verb used for take, receive, lay hold of, may allow a blunt objectless gloss that implies the whole chapter in one word: insubordination. (Or one could render consecutive vavs as both Dathan and Abiram - but this is to blame the incident on Korah alone.) What part of the character of the mutineers gives rise to the problem I think you can figure out. It's not uncommon for the unqualified to seek what looks like desirable influence and to gather around himself some equally supposedly influential collaborators.

I have highlighted what I think are some significant frames in the conversation and story.

Quarry is an odd gloss. It could be as simple as tradition suggests - put out, root out or the like. (One other time somewhere in Judges it may be used for this.) It's a place-holder for now. Again the word give (נתן) has a wide range, here rendered as yield.

Is it the land or the earth that develops the convenient sink-hole? I think it is land, that specific gift that God gives for our usage but whose ownership remains with God. The promised land is slighted by the chief spokespersons. They know how to insult.

אִם־כְּמ֤וֹת כָּל־הָֽאָדָם֙ יְמֻת֣וּן אֵ֔לֶּה וּפְקֻדַּת֙ כָּל־הָ֣אָדָ֔ם יִפָּקֵ֖ד עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם לֹ֥א יְהוָ֖ה שְׁלָחָֽנִי	29		If as death for every human, these die, or the visitation of every human is visited on them, Yahweh has not sent me.	3e	4C	25 7
וְאִם־בְּרִיאָ֞ה יִבְרָ֣א יְהוָ֗ה וּפָצְתָ֨ה הָאֲדָמָ֤ה אֶת־פִּ֙יהָ֙ וּבָלְעָ֤ה אֹתָם֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֔ם וְיָרְד֥וּ חַיִּ֖ים שְׁאֹ֑לָה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֧י נִֽאֲצ֛וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶת־יְהוָֽה	30		But if Yahweh is creating creation and the ground gapes her mouth to swallow them up and all that is theirs and they descend living to Sheol, then you will know that these persons spurned Yahweh.	3c	4C	39 17
וַיְהִי֙ כְּכַלֹּת֔וֹ לְדַבֵּ֕ר אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַתִּבָּקַ֥ע הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם	31		And it happened as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground split that was under them.	3e	4A	17 13
וַתִּפְתַּ֤ח הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֶת־פִּ֔יהָ וַתִּבְלַ֥ע אֹתָ֖ם וְאֶת־בָּתֵּיהֶ֑ם וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־הָאָדָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְקֹ֔רַח וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־הָרֲכֽוּשׁ	32		And the land opened her mouth and swallowed them and their houses, and every earthling that was of Korah and all the property.	3e	4C	19 17
וַיֵּ֨רְד֜וּ הֵ֣ם וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָהֶ֛ם חַיִּ֖ים שְׁאֹ֑לָה וַתְּכַ֤ס עֲלֵיהֶם֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּאבְד֖וּ מִתּ֥וֹךְ הַקָּהָֽל	33		And they descended, they and all that was theirs, living to Sheol. And the land covered them over and they perished from the midst of the congregation.	3d	4C	15 16
