Deuteronomy 11

The music of Deuteronomy shows the relationship between distant verses that I have pointed out in other contexts. Verse 7 beginning on the 6th note above the tonic, closes the parenthesis begun in verse 2.

The deeds in the parenthesis are those which all must come to realize as their own, but the children do not yet know how much trouble they can get into. Yes I read this as my experience recapitulating the canonical. That is how I obey these words to speak in them, i.e. to speak this language. In this act, there are many things I cannot express and this is good for me. There will be many situations that I will avoid (though there may also be those I should have avoided) because of the language that I am trained in. But it was not a rote situation. It is one that is a long road of what I hope was growth. The language does not allow me to think some thoughts and it encourages me to think of others rather than self. Whether I do or have done this or not is not for me to say.

I do not use the word curse (v26) in contrast to blessing. The word is not curse, but denial. It is reciprocal rather than condemnatory. Love that leads to responsible freedom, not freedom from responsibility but freedom to respond, is not a love that curses as frequently as the traditional translations imply. This is the love that enables the maturing of the earthling, the one and the many.

Notice the strange places where the major rest occurs. Not every verse makes sense in smooth English. Some verses (e.g. verse 2) seem to have missing words and generally, except for the verb to be, I don't fill in the spaces for you. Perhaps verse 2 really is missing a word. Anyway - it's not about children exactly though they take part, it's about the maturing determination of the human who has faced difficulties and is yet going to follow the words of Moses. (If you have followed Jesus or Christ or Paul, or all of them, then you will know that Moses is not irrelevant. If you haven't, well, enjoy the ride.)

Deuteronomy 11
1 And you will love Yahweh your God,
and you will keep his ordinance and his statutes and his judgments and his commandments every day.
11
23
2 And you will know today that not with your children, (who do not know and who have not seen the mentoring of Yahweh your God,
his greatness, even his courageous hand and his stretched out arm,
30
16
3 And his signs and his deeds that he did in the midst of Egypt,
for Pharaoh the king of Egypt and for all his land,
19
11
4 And what he did to the forces of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots, that he made the waters of the sea of reeds to cascade over their faces in their pursuit after them,
and Yahweh eliminated them until this day.
34
10
5 And what he did to you in the wilderness,
until you came to this place,
10
9
6 And what he did to Dathan and to Abiram the children of Eliab child of Reuben, that the land parted open her mouth and swallowed them, and their houses and their tents,
and all that was upheld that was around their feet, in close combat with all Israel.)
47
18
7 But your eyes have seen every great deed of Yahweh,
that he did.
17
4
8 And you will keep all the commandment which I am commanding you today,
so that you may be courageous and you will enter and you will possess the land that you will cross over toward to possess.
18
27
9 And so that you will prolong days over the ground that Yahweh swore to your ancestors to give them to their seed,
a land gushing with milk and honey.
32
8
10 For the land that you are going toward to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, she which you came out from,
where you sowed your seed and irrigated with your foot as a foliage garden.
28
21
11 But the land that you will cross over toward to possess is a land of mountains and crevasses.
Of the rain of the heavens she imbibes water,
22
9
12 a land that Yahweh your God searches out.
Continually, the eyes of Yahweh your God are on her, from the beginning of the year and to the following year.
14
24
13 And it will be that if hearing you hear my commandments that I myself have commanded you today,
to love Yahweh your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your being,
26
24
14 Then I will give the rain of your land in its time, early rain and maturing rain,
so you may gather your grain and your new wine and your fresh oil.
17
17
15 And I will give field-grass in your field for your cattle,
and you will eat and you will be satisfied.
13
8
16 Keep yourselves lest your heart be seduced,
and you turn aside and serve other gods and prostrate yourselves to them.
11
21
17 And the anger of Yahweh will burn among you. He will contain the heavens and there will be no rain and the ground will not yield her produce,
and you will perish swiftly from off the good land that Yahweh gave to you.
33
23
18 So set in place these words on your heart and on your very self,
and fasten them for a sign on your hand and they will be for frontlets between your eyes,
18
21
19 And you will teach them, your children, to speak in them,
when you sit in your house and when you walk in the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
14
23
20 And you will write them on the posts of your house and your gates. 15
21 So that your days may increase and the days of your children over the ground that swore Yahweh to your ancestors to give them,
as the days of the heavens over the earth.
33
9
22 For if to keep you will keep all this commandment which I myself am commanding you to do it:
to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, and to follow closely in him,
28
23
23 Then Yahweh will dispossess all these nations from before you,
and you will possess nations greater and more numerous than you.
17
14
24 Every place on which the sole of your foot will tread will be yours,
from the wilderness to Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, and to the farthest part of the sea, will be your borders.
17
29
25 No-one will take a stand in your face.
Your dread and the fear of you, Yahweh your God will give over the face of the whole land on which you will tread, as he spoke to you.
8
36
26 See, I am giving in your presence today,
a blessing and a denial.
12
6
27 The blessing:
that you hear the commandments of Yahweh your God that myself I have commanded you today.
4
26
28 And the denial: if you not hear the commandments of Yahweh your God and you turn aside from the way that myself I have commanded you today,
to walk after other gods that you do not know.
37
18
29 And it will be that when Yahweh your God will conduct you to the land that you are going toward to possess her,
that you will give the blessing against the hill of Gerizim and the denial against the hill of Eival.
28
22

30 Are not they across the Jordan, behind the way of the going down of the sun, in the land of the Canaanite who inhabits the steppe,
in the forefront of Gilgal next to the oaks of Moreh.
33
11
31 For you will cross over Jordan to come to possess the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you,
and you will possess her and you will inhabit her.
30
9
32 And you will keep and do all the statutes and the judgments,
that I have given in your presence today.
