Deuteronomy 4

For some odd reason, it seemed good to do Deuteronomy 4. I cannot say the word Deuteronomy without thinking of Dr. Peter Craigie, a teacher of mine over 35 years ago in Calgary. He taught me that Deuteronomy is a book of love. So many of us youngsters then did not have time to read it well. If I say I believe, I must not write off the books that have been given to teach me what my responses are to be. I don't know yet what I will learn, so I had better study with my mind somewhat open, no? Anyway Peter was right. And my thought that so-called 'law' had nothing to teach me, was wrong. So thoroughly wrong I can hardly express it. And the law vs grace issue, that arises when you read Romans, is not to be understood in a facile manner. Who can survive without the instruction that is from God?

Curious to me that this chapter ends with a section on the cities of refuge for involuntary manslaughter. We will come back to this in other sections of Torah still to be discovered.

Re geography and names, I note that Sihon is spelled differently from the same king in the Psalms, סיחן rather than סחון. Also Sion rather than Zion, and Sion is called Hermon (which is of course in the north.) Hills or mountains - take your choice, only one word הר in Hebrew.

Why should I pay attention? What have I heard of fire? What have I seen? That's another book. But is this not threatening? Not at all. It is reality - people have great gifts and they can fail in governance. We worship the idols of the age. And of course, we follow money in every age. So how then do we do this law with success? In Deuteronomy, perhaps it is the 10 words, (next chapter) but I haven't read it all yet.  And Deuteronomy gives rise to the story of Job (itself a response to chapter 28 and to Genesis of course), so the end is not reducible to a formula, but to the yes of this God to us.

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם מְאֹ֖ד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י לֹ֤א רְאִיתֶם֙ כָּל־תְּמוּנָ֔ה בְּי֗וֹם דִּבֶּ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם בְּחֹרֵ֖ב מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֵֽשׁ	15		So be guarded especially for your integrity, for you did not see any similitude on the day of the word of Yahweh to you in Horeb from the midst of the fire.	3c	4C	11 25
פֶּ֨ן־תַּשְׁחִת֔וּן וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם לָכֶ֛ם פֶּ֖סֶל תְּמוּנַ֣ת כָּל־סָ֑מֶל תַּבְנִ֥ית זָכָ֖ר א֥וֹ נְקֵבָֽה	16	~	Lest you destroy yourselves and you make for yourselves a graven image, the similitude of any statue, in the manner of male or female.	3d	4B	18 8

כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֥י מֵת֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את אֵינֶ֥נִּי עֹבֵ֖ר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְאַתֶּם֙ עֹֽבְרִ֔ים וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֕ם אֶת־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַטּוֹבָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת	22	B	For I am to die in this land. I will not cross over the Jordan. But you will cross over and possess this good land.	3e	4B	19 17

כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֵ֥שׁ אֹכְלָ֖ה ה֑וּא אֵ֖ל קַנָּֽא	24	C	For Yahweh your God, a devouring fire, is he, a jealous God.	3e	4C	11 3
כִּֽי־תוֹלִ֤יד בָּנִים֙ וּבְנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים וְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּ֖ם בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְהִשְׁחַתֶּ֗ם וַעֲשִׂ֤יתֶם פֶּ֙סֶל֙ תְּמ֣וּנַת כֹּ֔ל וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה־אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ	25		For you will beget children and the children of children and you will sleep in the land, and you will impair yourselves, and you will make a graven image, any similitude, and you will do evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God to grieve him.	3d	4C	15 33
הַעִידֹתִי֩ בָכֶ֨ם הַיּ֜וֹם אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ כִּֽי־אָבֹ֣ד תֹּאבֵדוּן֮ מַהֵר֒ מֵעַ֣ל הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם עֹבְרִ֧ים אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ לֹֽא־תַאֲרִיכֻ֤ן יָמִים֙ עָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֥י הִשָּׁמֵ֖ד תִּשָּׁמֵדֽוּן	26		I engage among you today the heavens and the earth that perishing you will perish swiftly from the land that you will cross over the Jordan toward to possess it. You will not prolong days against her, for to be exterminated, you will be exterminated.	3c	4C	44 17
וְהֵפִ֧יץ יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּעַמִּ֑ים וְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּם֙ מְתֵ֣י מִסְפָּ֔ר בַּגּוֹיִ֕ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְנַהֵ֧ג יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם שָֽׁמָּה	27		And Yahweh will disperse you among the peoples, and you will be a residue, a dying record in the nations toward which Yahweh will drive you.	3c	4B	10 22
וַעֲבַדְתֶּם־שָׁ֣ם אֱלֹהִ֔ים מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יְדֵ֣י אָדָ֑ם עֵ֣ץ וָאֶ֔בֶן אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יִרְאוּן֙ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁמְע֔וּן וְלֹ֥א יֹֽאכְל֖וּן וְלֹ֥א יְרִיחֻֽן	28		And you will serve there gods, the deed of the hands of a human, tree and stone which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.	3e	4C	15 23
וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּ֥ם מִשָּׁ֛ם אֶת־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ וּמָצָ֑אתָ כִּ֣י תִדְרְשֶׁ֔נּוּ בְּכָל־לְבָבְךָ֖ וּבְכָל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ	29		But if you seek from there, Yahweh your God, then you will find, for you will search him out with all your heart and with all your being.	3d	4B	17 15
בַּצַּ֣ר לְךָ֔ וּמְצָא֕וּךָ כֹּ֖ל הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה בְּאַחֲרִית֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וְשַׁבְתָּ֙ עַד־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֖ בְּקֹלֽוֹ	30		In your trouble, when all these words have found you, in the aftermath of the days, then you will turn to Yahweh your God and you will hear with his voice.	3e	4B	15 24
כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל רַחוּם֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לֹ֥א יַרְפְּךָ֖ וְלֹ֣א יַשְׁחִיתֶ֑ךָ וְלֹ֤א יִשְׁכַּח֙ אֶת־בְּרִ֣ית אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לָהֶֽם	31	B	For Yahweh your God is a compassionate God. He does not desist, and he will not destroy you. And he will not forget the covenant of your ancestors that he swore to them.	3e	4C	20 17
כִּ֣י שְׁאַל־נָא֩ לְיָמִ֨ים רִֽאשֹׁנִ֜ים אֲשֶׁר־הָי֣וּ לְפָנֶ֗יךָ לְמִן־הַיּוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁר֩ בָּרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ אָדָם֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּלְמִקְצֵ֥ה הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְעַד־קְצֵ֣ה הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם הֲנִֽהְיָ֗ה כַּדָּבָ֤ר הַגָּדוֹל֙ הַזֶּ֔ה א֖וֹ הֲנִשְׁמַ֥ע כָּמֹֽהוּ	32	B	But ask if you will of the days of former times which are before you, from the day that God created humanity over the earth, from the outskirts of the heavens and to the other extremity of the heavens, whether there has been as great a thing as this or has been heard like it.	3e	4C	49 18

וְתַ֗חַת כִּ֤י אָהַב֙ אֶת־אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ וַיִּבְחַ֥ר בְּזַרְע֖וֹ אַחֲרָ֑יו וַיּוֹצִֽאֲךָ֧ בְּפָנָ֛יו בְּכֹח֥וֹ הַגָּדֹ֖ל מִמִּצְרָֽיִם	37		And under that he loved your ancestors, and he chose among his seed after him, and he is bringing you forth in his presence by his great power from Egypt,	3c	4C	20 18
לְהוֹרִ֗ישׁ גּוֹיִ֛ם גְּדֹלִ֧ים וַעֲצֻמִ֛ים מִמְּךָ֖ מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ לַהֲבִֽיאֲךָ֗ לָֽתֶת־לְךָ֧ אֶת־אַרְצָ֛ם נַחֲלָ֖ה כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה	38		To dispossess nations greater and more numerous than you from your presence, to bring you in to give to you their land as inheritance as on this day.	3c	4A	18 19
וְיָדַעְתָּ֣ הַיּ֗וֹם וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ֮ אֶל־לְבָבֶךָ֒ כִּ֤י יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם מִמַּ֔עַל וְעַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ מִתָּ֑חַת אֵ֖ין עֽוֹד	39		So know today and turn to your heart that Yahweh he is the God. In the heavens above and on the earth from beneath, there is no further.	3e	4C	38 2
וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֞ אֶת־חֻקָּ֣יו וְאֶת־מִצְוֺתָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֤י מְצַוְּךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר֙ יִיטַ֣ב לְךָ֔ וּלְבָנֶ֖יךָ אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ וּלְמַ֨עַן תַּאֲרִ֤יךְ יָמִים֙ עַל־הַ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים	40		And you will keep his statutes and his commandments that I am commanding you today, that it may be good for you and for your children after you, and so that you prolong your days on the ground which Yahweh your God has given to you, all the days.	3c	4C	36 29
אָ֣ז יַבְדִּ֤יל מֹשֶׁה֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ עָרִ֔ים בְּעֵ֖בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן מִזְרְחָ֖ה שָֽׁמֶשׁ	41	B	Then Moses will differentiate three cities across the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun,	3e	4C	15 5
לָנֻ֨ס שָׁ֜מָּה רוֹצֵ֗חַ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִרְצַ֤ח אֶת־רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ בִּבְלִי־דַ֔עַת וְה֛וּא לֹא־שֹׂנֵ֥א ל֖וֹ מִתְּמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשׁ֑וֹם וְנָ֗ס אֶל־אַחַ֛ת מִן־הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖ל וָחָֽי	42		For the withdrawal thereto of a murderer who murdered his associate without knowledge, and he had not hated him previously, and withdrawing to one out of these cities, he might live:	3d	4C	27 13
אֶת־בֶּ֧צֶר בַּמִּדְבָּ֛ר בְּאֶ֥רֶץ הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר לָרֻֽאוּבֵנִ֑י וְאֶת־רָאמֹ֤ת בַּגִּלְעָד֙ לַגָּדִ֔י וְאֶת־גּוֹלָ֥ן בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן לַֽמְנַשִּֽׁי	43		Bezar in the wilderness in the land, the level place, for the Reubenite, and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadite, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.	3c	4C	17 20
וְזֹ֖את הַתּוֹרָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣ם מֹשֶׁ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	44		And this is the instruction, that Moses set up in the presence of the children of Israel.	3e	4B	5 12
אֵ֚לֶּה הָֽעֵדֹ֔ת וְהַֽחֻקִּ֖ים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם	45	C	These are the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel at their going out from Egypt.	3e	4C	14 19
בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן בַּגַּ֗יְא מ֚וּל בֵּ֣ית פְּע֔וֹר בְּאֶ֗רֶץ סִיחֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּחֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכָּ֤ה מֹשֶׁה֙ וּבְנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם	46		Across the Jordan in the gorge in the forefront of Beth-Peor in the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites that inhabited in Heshbon, which Moses struck and the children of Israel at their going out from Egypt.	3e	4C	30 18
וַיִּֽירְשׁ֨וּ אֶת־אַרְצ֜וֹ וְאֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ ׀ ע֣וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֗ן שְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן מִזְרַ֖ח שָֽׁמֶשׁ	47		And they possessed his land and the land of Og, king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites that were across the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun,	3e	4B	32 4
מֵעֲרֹעֵ֞ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־שְׂפַת־נַ֧חַל אַרְנֹ֛ן וְעַד־הַ֥ר שִׂיאֹ֖ן ה֥וּא חֶרְמֽוֹן	48		From Aroer that is over the bank of the wadi of Arnon and to the hill of Sion. (This is Hermon.)	3c	3g	21
וְכָל־הָ֨עֲרָבָ֜ה עֵ֤בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ מִזְרָ֔חָה וְעַ֖ד יָ֣ם הָעֲרָבָ֑ה תַּ֖חַת אַשְׁדֹּ֥ת הַפִּסְגָּֽה	49		And all the steppe across the Jordan toward the sunrise and to the sea of the steppe, under the slopes of Pisgah.	3e	4C	21 7
