Deuteronomy 4

For some odd reason, it seemed good to do Deuteronomy 4. I cannot say the word Deuteronomy without thinking of Dr. Peter Craigie, a teacher of mine over 35 years ago in Calgary. He taught me that Deuteronomy is a book of love. So many of us youngsters then did not have time to read it well. If I say I believe, I must not write off the books that have been given to teach me what my responses are to be. I don't know yet what I will learn, so I had better study with my mind somewhat open, no? Anyway Peter was right. And my thought that so-called 'law' had nothing to teach me was wrong. So thoroughly wrong I can hardly express it. And the law vs grace issue, that arises when you read Romans, is not to be understood in a facile manner. Who can survive without the instruction that is from God?

Curious to me that this chapter ends with a section on the cities of refuge for involuntary manslaughter. We will come back to this in other sections of Torah still to be discovered.

Re geography and names, I note that Sihon is spelled differently from the same king in the Psalms, סיחן rather than סחון. Also Sion rather than Zion, and Sion is called Hermon (which is of course in the north.) Hills or mountains - take your choice, only one word הר in Hebrew.

Why should I pay attention? What have I heard of fire? What have I seen? That's another book. But is this not threatening? Not at all. It is reality - people have great gifts and they can fail in governance. We worship the idols of the age. And of course, we follow money in every age. So how then do we do this law with success? In Deuteronomy, perhaps it is the 10 words, (next chapter) but I haven't read it all yet.  And Deuteronomy gives rise to the story of Job (itself a response to chapter 28 and to Genesis of course), so the end is not reducible to a formula, but to the yes of this God to us.

Deuteronomy 4
1 And now, Israel, hear the statutes and the judgments that I am teaching you to do,
so that you may live and go in and possess the land which Yahweh the God of your ancestors is giving to you.
31
30
2 You will not add to the word that I myself have commanded you, and you will not subtract from it,
to keep the commandments of Yahweh your God that I myself have commanded you.
26
21
3 Your eyes have seen what Yahweh did in Baal-Peor,
for all the persons who walked after Baal-Peor, Yahweh your God exterminated from within you.
18
28
4 But you, those who stayed close in Yahweh your God,
live, all of you, today.
12
6
5 See, I have taught you the statutes and judgments as Yahweh my God has commanded me,
to do so within the land that you are coming toward to possess it.
24
21
6 And you will keep them and you will do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding for the sight of the peoples,
who will hear of all these statutes and they will say, Certainly a people wise and discerning, this great nation.
22
31
7 For what nation is great whose God is near to it,
like Yahweh our God with all our call upon him?
16
13
8 And what nation is great whose statutes and judgments are righteous,
according to all this instruction that I have given in your presence today?
18
19
9 Certainly keep watch for yourself, and keep your integrity, especially lest you forget the things that your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.
And make them known to your children and to the children of your children.
41
14
10 The day that you stood in the presence of Yahweh your God at Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, Convene for me the people and I will have them hear my word,
that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the ground, and their children they may teach.
38
33
11 And you came near and stood under the hill.
And the hill was kindled in the fire to the heart of the heavens, darkness, clouds, and dark turbulence.
12
20
12 And Yahweh spoke to you from the midst of the fire.
The voice of words you, the ones hearing, but similitude none of you saw, except a voice.
12
18
13 And he made clear to you his covenant that he commanded you to do, ten words.
And he wrote them on two stone tablets.
24
12
14 And me Yahweh commanded at that time to teach you the statutes and judgments,
that you would do them in the land that you will cross over toward to possess.
22
20
15 So be guarded especially for your integrity,
for you did not see any similitude on the day of the word of Yahweh to you in Horeb from the midst of the fire.
11
25
16 Lest you destroy yourselves and you make for yourselves a graven image, the similitude of any statue,
in the manner of male or female.
18
8
17 In the manner of any beast that is in the earth,
in the manner of any winged bird that flies in the heavens,
11
15
18 In the manner of any that creep of the ground,
in the manner of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth.
9
15
19 And lest you lift up your eyes heavenward and see even the sun and the moon and and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and are enticed and prostrate yourselves to them, and serve them,
that Yahweh your God divided for all the peoples under all the heavens.
53
24
20 But you, Yahweh took, and he had you come forth from the forge of iron, from Egypt,
to become for himself a people, an inheritance, as on this day.
21
12
21 And Yahweh was angry with me over your words,
and swore that I should not cross over Jordan and I should not come to the good land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as inheritance.
10
38
22 For I am to die in this land. I will not cross over Jordan.
But you will cross over and possess this good land.
19
17
23 Keep yourselves lest you forget the covenant of Yahweh your God that he cut with you,
and you make for yourselves a graven image, the similitude of all that Yahweh your God is commanding you,
25
22
24 For Yahweh your God, a devouring fire, is he,
a jealous God.
11
3

25 For you will beget children and the children of children and you will sleep in the land,
and you will impair yourselves, and you will make a graven image, any similitude, and you will do evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God to grieve him.
15
33
26 I engage among you today the heavens and the earth that perishing you will perish swiftly from the land that you will cross over the Jordan toward to possess it.
You will not prolong days against her, for to be exterminated, you will be exterminated.
44
17
27 And Yahweh will disperse you among the peoples
and you will be a residue, a dying record in the nations toward which Yahweh will drive you.
10
22

28 And you will serve there gods, the deed of the hands of a human,
tree and stone which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
15
23
29 But if you seek from there, Yahweh your God, then you will find,
for you will search him out with all your heart and with all your being.
17
15
30 In your trouble, when all these words have found you,
in the aftermath of the days, then you will turn to Yahweh your God and you will hear with his voice.
15
24

31 For Yahweh your God is a compassionate God. He does not desist, and he will not destroy you.
And he will not forget the covenant of your ancestors that he swore to them.
20
17

32 But ask if you will of the days of former times which are before you, from the day that God created humanity over the earth, from the outskirts of the heavens and to the other extremity of the heavens,
whether there has been as great a thing as this or has been heard like it.
49
18
33 Did a people hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire as you have heard,

34 Or has a god ventured to come to, to receive for himself a nation, from within a nation, by temptations, from signs, and in portents, and in war, and by a courageous hand and an arm stretched out, and by great fears,
according to everything that Yahweh your God has undertaken for you in Egypt in your sight.
52
21
35 You have seen to know that Yahweh, he is the God.
There is nothing else, he alone.
16
5

36 From the heavens he made you to hear his voice, to mentor you,
and on the earth he showed you his great fire. And his words you have heard from the midst of the fire.
15
24

37 And under that he loved your ancestors, and he chose among his seed after him,
and he is bringing you forth in his presence by his great power from Egypt,
20
18
38 To dispossess nations greater and more numerous than you from your presence,
to bring you in to give to you their land as inheritance as on this day.
18
19
39 So know today and turn to your heart that Yahweh he is the God.
In the heavens above and on the earth from beneath, there is no further.
38
2

40 And you will keep his statutes and his commandments that I am commanding you today that it may be good for you and for your children after you,
and so that you you prolong days on the ground which Yahweh your God has given to you, every one of the days.
36
29

41 Then Moses will differentiate three cities across the Jordan,
toward the rising of the sun,
15
5

42 For the withdrawal thereto of a murderer who murdered his associate without knowledge ,and he not did hate him from yesterday three days,
and withdrawing to one out of these cities, he might live:
27
13
