Judges 7

There are a pair of stems that seem to be reversed in tone in this chapter.

צעק outcry (19) cry out (19) cried out (17) mobilize (2) 'ts crying out (1) called forth (1) cries out (1) crying out (1) tza cry out (1) untranslated (1)
רוע jubilation (21) raise shout (15) blast triumph (9) shout triumph (8) raised shout (5) jubilant (4) shouted triumph (3) give blast triumph (1) raising shout (1) shouted down (1) triumph (1)

The outcry assumed a new meaning, mobilize. And the jubilation is perhaps ambivalent. But I don't know which army is being addressed in verse 21. Also I added a sense to נפל fall, to fall helter-skelter.

Possibly withdraw (נוס) could have the sense of fleeing (נדד), but I have repeatedly resisted this overlap with another stem. You can see how they might overlap in both their senses.

נדד flee (12) fled (10)  sequester (5) ride away (2) vagrant (1)
נוס withdraw (50) withdrew (46) haven (14) withdrawn (11) withdrawal (2) such withdraw (1) untranslated (1)

space is an odd gloss for תחת, but it is used for this in the description of the Sabbath in Exodus 16. An interesting association for this chapter, hardly a Sabbath.

1 And Jerubbaal (he is Gideon) rose up early and all the people that were with him, and they encamped by the spring of Apprehension.
And the army of Midian was north of him from the hillock of Moreh in the valley.

2 And Yahweh said to Gideon the people that are with you are too many for me to give Midian into their hands,
lest Israel adorn themselves over me, saying, My hand has saved me.

3 So now call, please, in the ears of the people, saying, Who is fearful or apprehensive, let him return, and let them quit from the hill of the Gilead,
and from the people twenty two thousand returned, ten thousand were still there.

Psalms 9-10

This pair of psalms is a partial acrostic poem. 9:9-20 is the psalm for today. Music is here: Psalm 9 Psalm 10.

Today's first lesson is the story of David and the Philistine. It must have been 3 years ago (indeed it was!) that we performed this music in Hebrew and English with 4 actors as the Old Testament lesson.
I wonder how my algorithms would guess glosses for this psalm if I let them. This reading is about 5 or 6 years old. The incomplete acrostic is noted by the boldface letters. (Aleph and Ayin are guttural and so may be represented by any vowel. Dalet is missing, etc. Stanzas are of varying length. Lots about acrostics in the Bible on this blog.)

Nehemiah 5

Some of those governed by Nehemiah are clearly in a bad way with respect to economic hardship. They appear to have 'sold' their children into slavery, and mortgaged their fields to pay taxes. JB renders כבשׁ as sell (מכר) and rape (שׁגל), KJV as bring into bondage (אסר). I don't have quite this luxury of free interpretation. But the exploitation among the chosen example is clear nonetheless.

KJV is showing its prejudice when it labels the nations as the heathen. "O'er heathen lands afar, thick darkness broodeth yet". This is the kind of prejudiced reading I grew up with in the shadow of  the colonial tradition. Some hymnody is less than inspirational. For גוי, KJV has about 2/3 nation and most of the rest heathen with a few gentile and people. I have used only nation for this word. Nation and body are possibly related stems. All the stems beginning with גו are noted here - I am using this site now for experimentation with presenting parts of my emerging glossary.

Nehemiah is from נאם to comfort. In the great analogy, this is the comforter, the one who builds the temple, whether new or old. Do his actions (in verse 13, his questions) represent the actions of God who takes care of his people? (Not to mention others for the moment.) Perhaps that lets us see the way in which he uses the viceroy's office and privilege. How do we use ours?

There is a phrase in verse 11 with three consecutive stems, דגן ,ירשׁ ,צהר, grain, new wine, clarified oil that sent me back to Deuteronomy and three of the minor prophets, Hosea 2.10, Joel 1.10, 2.19, 24 and Haggai 1.11. I use clarified oil to distinguish this oil from שׁמן. This phrase is like a leitmotif in Deuteronomy (7.13, 11.14, 12.17, 14.23, 18.4, 28.51) concerning the richness of the land to be possessed (also ירשׁ - no one puts new wine in old wine-skins). Also in Jeremiah, e.g. 31.12. And there are a couple yet to come.

Verse 14. It is not passive voice ('I was appointed' KJV). JB has 'the king appointed'. There is no antecedent for the subject of the verb. All these moves are clarifications to enable speed-reading. No one ever heard 'the word' with speed reading. Somehow we need to match God's patience.

Verse 2 - (we are many) perhaps a euphemism for selling their children into slavery.

Verse 13 - his, i.e. God's house and God's labour. As we labour for God so God labours for us. Not to be brushed off lightly. Hopefully that leaves the exploiters without resentment.

A test of a whole chapter in interlinear format

Most people don't think interlinears are a good way to learn a language. I think glossaries are worse. But both are useful tools. Well, I have used them! And I can create this interleaved word form in Hebrew sequence from what I have done. This is one way of checking my readings. (It could be possible to learn to read it this way - bilingual reading - and it does summarize my reasoning.)

Here is Nehemiah 9 verse 1 - scheduled for some time in early August
1וביום and on the day עשׂרים twenty וארבעה fourth לחדשׁ of month הזה this נאספו gathered בני the children of ישׂראל Israel בצום with fasting ובשׂקים and in sackcloth ואדמה and debris from the ground עליהם upon them
The verse reads left to right like my native tongue, but the Hebrew reads in its normal sequence (each word reading right to left of course). So for instance in verse 1, twenty four (or fourth) is obviously עשׂרים וארבעה and the whole date takes 5 words in Hebrew to express including in this case the emphasis הזה added as part of the phrase. When הזה the this occurs in the sentence, the emphasis takes precedence over the immediately prior ה in the sentence. In literal English 'of the month the this' we would never read. It becomes: of this month. And the whole initial phrase: on the twenty-fourth of this month. The next bit of verse 1 is verb - third person plural masculine - subject - in construct and an implied definite article - and the children of Israel gathered. Then clearly how they gathered with fasting and in sackcloth and finally, ואדמה is interpreted from the following עליהם as meaning that they had covered themselves with some sort of debris - but I had to get ground or humus into that interpretation.(See also 2 Samuel 1:2, 15:32 same phrase)

All the possible glosses associated with the stems for verse 1 (excluding the grammar domain) that I have used are

אדם humanity (219) ground (195) human (182) earthling (127) adam (12) humus (7) debris ground (3) dust-bowl (1)
אסף gather (166) ingather (3) gathered sayings (1)
בן children (2,269) child (1,435) son (314) sons (149) he- (33) squab (11) untranslated (5) little (4) ben- (3) -kin (2) concerning children (2) grandson (2) kids (2) male foal (2) calve (1) children - (1) cubs (1) destiny (1) eaglet (1)
חדשׁ month (183) new moon (62) new (48) renovate (3) new thing (2)
יום day (1,126) days (745) today (179) day long (43) untranslated (13) regular (9) day span (8) two day (5) day require (2) many day (2) very day (2) days ago (1) days stretch (1) few day (1) full year (1) other day (1) plurality day (1) working day (1)
עשׂר twenty (279) untranslated (256) ten (142) tenth (72) tithe (23) eleven (14) eleventh (13) twentieth (8) tens (3) teen (1) twenty-first (1)
צום fast (42)
רבע four (208) forty (121) fourth (57) fourteen (26) fourteenth (22) four generation (4) fourth part (2) fortieth (1) four part (1) fourfold (1)
שׂק sackcloth (32)

Here's the whole chapter which if you read it, you could probably grade my paper and find some bugs in my reasoning. -- indicates no translation for the word. In verse 2 על could be rendered as concerning or the like. It is like most prepositions very flexible and in this case is interpreted as 'not required' in the English phrase. This stem is untranslated about 5% of the time.

2 Chronicles 13

See also 1 Kings 15. Abijam there = Abijah here. This is 'a sermon' related to the breakup of the southern and northern kingdoms. It is evident that the seeds of the breakup are early in the time of Samuel.

2 Chronicles 13 Fn Min Max Syll
בִּשְׁנַ֛ת שְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ יָרָבְעָ֑ם
וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ אֲבִיָּ֖ה עַל־יְהוּדָֽה
1 In year of the eighteenth of king Jeroboam,
and Abijah reigned over Judah.

שָׁל֣וֹשׁ שָׁנִ֗ים מָלַךְ֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ מִיכָיָ֥הוּ בַת־אוּרִיאֵ֖ל מִן־גִּבְעָ֑ה
וּמִלְחָמָ֥ה הָיְתָ֛ה בֵּ֥ין אֲבִיָּ֖ה וּבֵ֥ין יָרָבְעָֽם
2 Three years he reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother was Michaiah, the daughter of Uriel from Gibeah.
And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

וַיֶּאְסֹ֨ר אֲבִיָּ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה בְּחַ֙יִל֙ גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י מִלְחָמָ֔ה אַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֖לֶף אִ֣ישׁ בָּח֑וּר

3 And Abijah bound the battle with a force of valiant men of battle, four hundred thousand chosen men.
And Jeroboam arranged for battle with him, eight hundred thousand chosen men of valour and force.

and said, Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel.

but Rehoboam was a youth and tender of heart, and was not resolute facing them.
