Psalm 135 in the lurch

I left that psalm 135 in limbo, unanalysed. It's clear that complex analysis using AI is difficult. Prompting is difficult. It's possible also that I will miss features in the music because I look at them in a particular way. For instance, in psalm 135, is it possible that the verses beginning on the mediant g are indeed the beginning of strophes? Of course it is. It would simply mean that the strophes look back to some part of the previous writing in the psalm.

Note: my 18 volumes of printer-ready material are almost entirely without analysis. There are introductory paragraphs in the volume on Job, but only brief notes at the end of the volume for the other volumes. I don't want to impose on the Scripture a premature method of strophe-hunting. The usage of the music is both constrained and too subtle to consider its many possible roles. But a few of them are outlined in the following analysis. I will say this -- even starting this analysis would have been impossible if I had only studied Wickes and the concepts he insisted on -- that there is no relationship across verses, chapters, or books in the use of the accents. Wickes is simply incorrect in his thesis. It is the deciphering key of Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura that has made my work possible. Here we see music and not hierarchy, we hear the theology of the testament in the shapes, and not simply pauses or continuations. We hear the love of the composers and compilers of the Hebrew canon for their God, not to mention the love of God for all of us also.

There are features to identify. 

A. Count the features of the music: (if you have a copy of my spreadsheet with the abbreviations, use it for analysis -- this psalm is below so you can use the find feature of your browser to check my work.)

1. Contrary to expectation after the responsive chorus of 136, the second cola in many of the bicola of 135 is actually a repeating shape: revia mugrash on an A reciting note returning to the tonic. This is a very restful return to the tonic. It occurs in 6 of the 21 verses. In 5 of the 21 verses the return to the tonic is similar but adds an f# on the way down. Equally restful and with an additional step. Other returns to the tonic also occur in pairs -- verses 2-3 and verses 15-16.
2. Four verses recite the revia-mugrash (the tuba announcing the tonic) from f#.
3. Also note that the approach to the atnah is from the dominant, B, in 19 of the 21 verses. g B ^A in 15 of those 21. The two that are unique are verses 6 and 21.
4. Verse 6 is the only verse that approaches the tonic from f#, itself prepared for by the ole-veyored. This is rare (8 occurrences) if there is no ole in the verse, but frequent preparation for the caesura when both are in the verse (119 occurrences -- about 25% of the occurrences of ole use this approach to the subdominant).

B. Observe the sequences of the verse contours.

1. In the middle of this poem - verses 8 to 14, three collections of verses refer back to a prior anchor. What is it?
2. Note that both verses six and seven are tricola. Psalms 111 and 112 end with a double tricolon, so it is not unlikely that this double ends a strophe. The words agree. 

C. Observe the use of or not of the variations in ornaments.

D. Look for confirmation of your observations in the text. Enough for now.

Here is the psalm with abbreviated score. Strophes are hard to draw because they are not of constant length, but they draw on musical memory as defined in the prior verses. E.g. the paired 15-16 in contrast with standing in the courts of ihvh in verses 2-3. The last part of verse 18 will be hammered home 26 times in the next psalm as we have already seen.

This miniature is worth some detailed analysis. Verse 1 exhibits the tri-colon 1-2-4-1. The psalmist begins the whole series of the songs of the ascents with an ornament, the revia. Why begin the series with something other than the default starting note? The patterns I have seen throughout my analysis of prose and poetry support my thesis that the first syllable having a starting note other than the tonic signals a connection to what has gone before. Perhaps we won't surmise the connection until we finish the series of 15 psalms to 134. But perhaps after the long assessment and appreciation of God's instruction in Psalm 119, the whole approach of the fifteen steps to the temple recognizes that instruction is fully linked to worship.

The movement from 1 to 2 is short, revia, e, ole f#. From 2 to 4 is without ornament, f# g B A. The movement from A to e (4-1) includes the geresh followed by revia (revia-mugrash) and immediately moves to the tonic for the whole of the last word. I call (on the rest note) and he answers me, on the low reciting pitch, e.

The prayer of verse 2  (1-4-1) is a simple melody, e revia, B g A, A f# e. Verse 3 is 1-1, a colon moving from tonic to tonic without a mid verse cadence, e B g f# revia, f# e.  Whose tongue is being described? The revia is not used again in the psalm. Verses 2 and 3 are set apart -- framed by revia -- and as the only verses that do not use the revia-mugrash.

Note the joining of verses 5 and 6, and the ways in which the mid verse cadence in verses 4 to 7 is approached: 4 e-B-A, 5 e g B A, and 6 g e B A, and 7 e g B A. Several variations on the notes of the triad. All the turns (revia-mugrash) announcing the return to the tonic are executed on the rest note A. The psalmist is at ease in expressing this serious prayer for integrity and peace. Perhaps verse 7 gives us a reason for silence. What is the antecedent of they? The only plural in the poem is the lips.

Psalm 89

In Seeing the Psalter, I ignored the music except for a very short introduction on page 400 for Psalm 120. I was concentrating on the words at the time and they are of course still important, but the music supports them as do the word recurrence patterns that I exhibited in the earlier work. There I divided the psalm into three large sections, 1-19, 20-38, and 39-53. Here is the musical analysis for these sections.

I noted and fixed a number of errors in the music by comparing the Aleppo codex with the Leningrad codex. Several of them in Psalms 119 and 89 were on the words your faithfulness, אֱ֝מ֥וּנָתְךָ֗. Several times since the start of the project in October, I have repaired this word combination in psalms 36, 88, 89, 92, 119, and 143.

The word faithfulness occurs 7 times in this psalm. Note how it is set in the various parts of the verses 2, a motif imitated in verse 3, 6 a more typical second half of a verse, the motif of verse 6 imitated in verse 9. My faithfulness (occurs only in this psalm in the Bible) is in the first part of verse 25. Verse 34 looks like an error in the Aleppo codex -- but there is no extant prior manuscript to compare it with. Verse 50 is similarly at a low tessitura. Perhaps the lament of the text supports it. These instances can be compared with other settings of the words in the psalms: 36 v6, 40 v11, 88 v12, 92 v3, 119 v90, 143 v1.

21 ♪g I have found David my servant. With the oil of my holiness I have anointed him. (g-1-4-1)

22 That my hand will be established with him, also my arm will assure him. (1-4-1)
כב אש֣ר י֭די תכ֣ון עמ֑ו אף־זרוע֥י תאמצֽנו	8 8		cb awr idi ticon yimo af-zroyi tamxnu
23 An enemy will not have a claim on him. And a child of injustice will not answer him. (1-4-1)

24 And I have beaten his foes before his face, and those hating him I will plague. (1-4-1)

25 And my faithfulness and my kindness are with him, and in my name his horn will be exalted. (1-4-1)

32 If they profane my statutes, or fail to keep my commandments, (1-4-1)

33 then I will visit their transgression with the sceptre, and with touches their iniquity. (1-4-1)
