Deuteronomy 26

The Israelite is taught here how to pray. Note the change in personal pronoun in the rehearsed speech. Verse 13 raises the question, what do we do with holiness? We are to burn it (kindle) like political capital. As usual, my glosses are unconventional. All words related to the domain of fire, heat, anger and so on are separated and not overlapped. There may be 1 Hebrew to many English, but I try very hard to avoid 1 English mapping back to many Hebrew. Sometimes there are legitimate homonyms in Hebrew, but often, as in this case, the traditional translations have given up and assigned a common English word (in this case bring/brought) to a Hebrew root that is not justified by the usage. And here we thought the 17th century translators did not guess at a rendering! Sorry - they did and frequently. JB has: I have cleared my house of all that was consecrated. Nice, but it isn't 'my' house - that's bordering on too individualistic. Kindle suggests both sacrifice and I think of Psalm 2. He kindles as a hint of his anger. Such is the delicate yet comprehensive nature of this relationship that is without compromise or workaround (verse 14).

Note the play on what is holiness. It is the fullness of the treasury of goods and services and everything else visible and invisible, that we can provide from the created and uncreated order for each other and for all.

In this chapter, (initially) I added affirm as a variation on my glosses for אמר, where I already use words like say, promise, talk, pronounce, vocal (once for an acrostic). When I add a gloss like this, I wonder how many places I might change in the past. It is interesting to me that if there is such a place, it is the nature of my patterns that I seem to find it eventually. [In this case I have rejected the experiment. I need affirm for the awkward language of Jeremiah 44.]

As I complete the process, I will probably write verification routines that scan already translated areas for anomalies on the sentence and gloss level. Believe it or not, I am still updating the online translations if I make such a change. They are a sort of cloud back up for me at this point. Today I hope to do something about that lack of backup.
