1 Chronicles 23

Curious that verse 17 is the only verse in a list where the verb to be is explicit, and its number is unexpected, third person plural when there is an only child.
1 Chronicles 23 Fn Min Max Syll

Fourteen other verses (below) have the same musical shape as verse 1. I wonder if the composer was considering any one of them? I think where a musical phrase is common, such a connection is unlikely. The pattern to the rest (atnah) occurs 617 times. The pattern of the return to the tonic (silluq) occurs 1325 times. Rather too common for deliberate imitation.

Interesting to note both the two verses about the families of Levi are in this list.

Exodus 2.21 "And Moses was humoured to settle with the man,
so he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses."
Exodus 6.19 "And the children of Merari, Maxali and Mushi.
These are the families of Levi of their successions."
Exodus 31.3 "And I have filled him with the spirit of God,
in wisdom, and with understanding, and in knowledge, and in all lines of work,"
Exodus 35.31 "And the spirit of God filled him,
in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all lines of work,"
Exodus 40.25 "And he trimmed the lamps in the presence of Yahweh,
as Yahweh commanded Moses."
Exodus 40.27 "And he burned incense on it, incense of sweet spices,
as Yahweh commanded Moses."
Leviticus 14.15 "And the priest will take from the log of oil,
and infuse onto the palm of the priest's left hand."
Numbers 15.27 "And if one of you sins by going astray,
then let such bring near a yearling she-goat for a sin offering."
Numbers 30.1 "And Moses talked to the children of Israel,
according to everything that Yahweh commanded Moses."
Joshua 15.32 "And Lvaot and Shilchim and Ain and Rimmon.
Total cities twenty-nine and their courts."
2 Samuel 5.10 "So David went on walking and becoming great,
and Yahweh the God of hosts was with him."
Jeremiah 5.8 Horses plump from lust they were,
each neighing to the woman of his associate.
Ezra 7.8 And he entered Jerusalem in the fifth new moon.
This was the seventh year of the king.
1 Chronicles 6.4 "The children of Merari, Maxali and Mushi,
and these are the families of Levi for their ancestors."

Ezekiel 26

The image of the fishing net (verse 5) is striking. It is the same stem חרם as the ban, utter destruction. The stretch comes with the use of the image in Matthew 8:47 as a parable of the kingdom of heaven. I am frankly astonished at the homonym. The passage in my Hebrew NT uses כמר, dragnet, which also has other very different glosses including craving or fever!

I don't think free association, pun, or double entendre should work this way. But here you have some images of the net that are far from positive, and the parable is not entirely positive either. Nevertheless, metaphor is acceptable, sword = word (verse 6) is a non-violent interruption of violence.

This is where we could go when this project is over, the mind of Jesus and the potential associations in the NT based on word relationships with the OT via Hebrew rather than via Greek. This was after all my original intention, to understand the relationship of father and child as depicted in the epistle to the Hebrews. Still some distance to cover.

Their seems little doubt that this extended lament continues the thread evident right through to Revelation of the tension between commerce and community. One can see it in modern politics as people bring out their local national interests at the expense of their own integrity. What does it profit to gain the whole world and lose integrity?  I saw a long thread on Facebook the other day lambasting socialism, while not realizing that our society is based on agreed cooperation in the truth. And the truth is we are mutually interdependent. And we are dependent on all sorts of people we may not like and who are not like us. Time for a greater love. Mind you, there is deception on every street corner. You only have to sit at a garage sale to find this out.

[Just noted this exploration of Ezekiel in current reception history.]

The extended statement in verses 19-20 should be a translation exercise. What a mouthful! JB reverts to prose from their poetic indentation. (If one sings the music, does the text become poetry?) Music follows with my choices of possible glosses for verses 20-21 below. But use your own discretion. I am attempting to use my domain-subdomain filters and they are a very loose imposition on the data at the moment. Or take your favorite translation and map it to the stems. See what the committees did. And what does this mean? Who are the islands? Is Ezekiel anti-trade as if he were in favour of economic nationalism? (Not a chance.) Is Tyre an image of something more?

Networked blogs

I think my automated posts to Facebook at 4 am every morning are going to stop on June 6. This feature was provided by Networked blogs and now they want not to do it anymore. Some of my friends will be delighted since they get too many posts about my 'reading' project. I will probably share my links manually to FB and Twitter. Any other locations (Google+ will continue) are outside my knowledge. I do have accounts at Tumblr and Wordpress but I don't use them much.

Does anyone have some good ideas about promoting content on social media platforms? Happy to hear from you.

Always happy to hear from you. I still comment on blogs occasionally but it is almost as rare as the dodo bird.

About eclectic reconstruction of texts, there is a good article in 4 parts here. Those of you who read about my own music and concordant English reading of the Hebrew will see where I have not gone in my search for texts. I simply look at what I am given. The search for earlier texts is itself a fascinating study, but not my goal.

Jeremiah 12

This short chapter has been full of thorns. I knew but had forgotten a synonym I could not resolve into two separate words since pluck is short of synonyms in English. And here was yet a third Hebrew stem wanting to use pluck. נתשׁ is a word that occurs 13 times in Jeremiah and also occurs once each in a number of other books.  At least that is how it looks in my data to date. In the Psalms, its sense seems to be blot out, but in Jeremiah, it seems also to have a more limited sense of pluck out. I decided pluck out was a reading into the text of unwarranted anger, and that the simple deport was adequate. I saw then that deport would fit in some if not all of the singular uses in other books.

One of the problems of beginning with poetry is that the poetic is glossed first. Possibly this was a simple word before it was used figuratively.

These questions slow me down... But when I resolve the conflict, something clicks into place perhaps just a little more snugly. In this case blot out is sometimes too strong and deport is more appropriate. Fortunately I was able rescue the gloss deport, by replacing my careless use of deportation for גלה with its dominant gloss, exile.

One just cannot paint every piece of the puzzle the same colour. But which colour goes with which piece? I am questioning every careless synonym. And I already had a compromise for pluck. I have not been able to fix that yet. What are the nuanced distinctions between נסח and קטף? The former is given the Latin evelli, and extirpate will do quite nicely. Though regrettably, it changes a psalm and so affects previously published books. O well, such must be the case.

Watch for unannounced changes in speaker. Where are they and who is speaking?

2 Samuel 21

There are a few tongue-twisters here. I also wrestled a little with the giants. I don't remember why I did not use the gloss giant. For רפאים I have used shades or titans. Shades for the metaphorical usage in parallel with the dead. There is a note here on Deuteronomy 3. I can see why folks like Deane had enough material for doctorates on giants.

re Goliath, compare the parallel, 1 Chronicles 20:5.

2 Samuel 21 Fn Min Max Syll

1 And there was a famine in the days of David, three years, year after year, and David sought out the face of Yahweh.
And Yahweh said, To Saul and to the house of blood, in that he had put to death the Gibeonites.

2 So the king called the Gibeonites, and he said to them,
(and the Gibeonites, they were not from the children of Israel but rather from the remains of the Amorite, and the children of Israel had sworn to them, and Saul sought out to strike them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah),

8 And the king took two of the sons of Ritspah, the daughter of Ayah, which she gave birth to for Saul, Armoni and Mephiboshet,
and the five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul, which she gave birth to for Adriel, child of Barzillai the Meholathite.

9 And he gave them into the hand of the Gibeonites, and they displayed them on the hill in the presence of Yahweh. And they fell, the seven, as one.
And they were put to death in the days of the harvest, at the beginning, at the commencement of the barley harvest.

10 And Ritspah the daughter of Ayah took sackcloth and stretched it out for herself on the rock, from the start of the harvest till water was poured forth on them from the heavens,
and no fowl of the heavens was permitted to rest on them by day, nor the animals of the field by night.

11 And it was told David,
what Ritspah, the daughter of Ayah, the courtesan of Saul had done.

12 And David went and he took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the superiors of Jabesh Gilead,
who had stolen them from the plaza of the house of Shean where the Philistines had hanged them, on the day the Philistines struck Saul in Gilboa.

14 And they entombed the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the land of Benjamin, in Halt, in the tomb of Kish his father, and they did all that the king commanded,
and God was petitioned for the land, after such things.

15 And there was more war for the Philistines with Israel,
and David went down and his servants with him, and they fought the Philistines, and David was tired.

17 But Abishai, child of Tseruyah, was help to him, and he struck the Philistine and rendered him lifeless.
Then the men of David swore to him, saying, You will not go out any more with us to battle, that the lamp of Israel not be quenched.

19 And there was yet again the battle in Gob with the Philistines,
and Elxanan, child of the forests of the weaver of Bethlehem, struck Goliath the Gittite, and the timber of his spear was like a weaver's beam.
3c 4C 13
29

20 Then there was more war in Gath.
And there was a man of dissension, and the fingers of his hands, and the toes of his feet, were six and six, twenty four the count. And he also was born of the titan.
3e 4C 8

Judges 18

This section of the Bible, like many, has no example of good behaviour among the chosen people. Do not go and do likewise. This continues the story of Micah.

Judges 18 Fn Min Max Syll
1 In those days there was no king in Israel.
And in those days, the sceptre of the Danites sought for itself to settle an inheritance. For until that day the inheritance had not fallen to it among the sceptres of Israel.

2 And the children of Dan sent from their family, five persons from their shores, persons of children of ability, from Tsora and from Eshtaol, to survey the land and to examine it, and they said to them, Go. Examine the land.
And they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and they lodged there.

15
3 C They were with the house of Micah, and they recognized the voice of the Levite lad,
and they turned aside there and they said to him, Who brought you here? And what you are doing in this? And what do you have here?
3d 4C 20
28
4 And he said to them, As this and as this, Micah has done for me,
And he has hired me, and I am his priest.
3e 4B 16
11
5 And they said to him, Ask, if you will, in God,
that we may know which way for us will be prosperous, that we may go in it.
3e 4B 10
20
6 And the priest said to them, Go in peace.
Straightforward of Yahweh is your way that you are going in.
3c 4B 13
12
7 And the five persons went and they came to Laish.
And they saw the people that were within her, settled, trusting, according to the framework of Sidonians, quiet and trusting. And there was no humiliating matter in the land. Dispossession could be coerced. Distant they were from Sidon, and they were without interaction with humanity.
3e 4C 15
60
8 And they came to their kin, to Tsora and Eshtaol,
and their kin said to them, What is with you?
3d 4A 13
11
9 And they said, Arise. Let us go up over them, for we have seen the land, and behold it is very good.
But you, are you becalmed? Do not be slothful to go, to enter, to possess the land.
3e 4C 27
21
10 When you come, you come to a trusting people, and the land is broad of means,
for God has given her into your hand, a place where there is no lack of every thing that is in the earth.
3e 4B 29
16
11 And they migrated from there, from the family of Dan, from Tsora and from Eshtaol,
six hundred, each attired with instruments of battle.
3e 4C 20
11

12 And they came up to and encamped in the town of Yearim in Judah.
Therefore they call that place the camp of Dan to this day. Behold, it is behind the town of Yearim.
3d 4C 17
28
13 And they crossed over mount Ephraim from there,
and they came to the house of Micah.
3e 4A 10
7
14 And the five persons who went to survey the land of Laish answered, and they said to their kin, Do you know that there is in those houses an ephod, and healing images, and a graven image, and a molten image,
so now make known what you will do.
3e 4C 53
9
15 And they turned aside there, and they came to the house of the lad, the Levite, the house of Micah,
and asked him for peace.
3d 4B 20
7
16 And six hundred, each attired with instruments of their battle, stood firm at the door of the gate,
(who were from the children of Dan).
3e 4B 21
5

18 And these came to the house of Micah, and they took graven image, the ephod, and the healing images, and and the molten image,
and the priest said to them, What you are doing?
3e 4C 28
14

19 And they said to him, Silence. Set your hand over your mouth, and go with us, and be for us father and priest.
Is it better for you to be a priest of the house of one man, or for you to be a priest for a sceptre and for a family in Israel?
3e 4C 27
29
20 And the heart of the priest was merry and he took the ephod, and the healing images, and the graven image,
and went within the people.
3e 4B 24
8
21 And they faced about,
and they went, and they put the little ones, and the livestock, and the glory before them.
3c 4A 7
20

22 f They had distanced themselves from the house of Micah,
and the men that were in the houses that were beside the house of Micah appealed, and followed the children of Dan closely.
3e 4C 9
27
23 And they called out to the children of Dan, and they turned round their faces,
and they said to Micah, What is it to you that you appeal?
3e 4B 15
13

24 And he said, My gods that I have made, you have taken, and the priest, and you walk away, and what is mine any more?
And What is this? you say to me, What is it to you?
3c 4B 27
9

25 And the children of Dan said to him, Let not your voice be heard with us,
lest provocative persons come across you, and your very self be gathered, and those of your household.
3e 4C 16
26
26 And the children of Dan went their way.
And Micah saw that they were resolute compared to him, and he faced about and returned to his house.
3e 4B 9
21

and the city, they incinerated in the fire.
3c 4B 44
8

28 And there was none to deliver, for it was far from Sidon, and they were without interaction with humanity, and it was in the valley that is of the house of Rexob.
And they built the city and they settled in it.
