Genesis 8

A little Genesis as a respite from Zechariah. Back to the barge which we left floating some time ago. The birth imagery is unexpected. (חול Dance, whirl, twist, give birth, be in labour). Also meandering and turning give a little more to the turmoil of the waters at their peak. There are several different words for abating and drying up (including desert / drained, and dry). I didn't use abate since I have it for another word that is not used here.

But it's a story - and a few varied words help us hear it over the familiar. [corrected - I had printed the wrong chapter. I have also eliminated the word appeasing. See the post on Leviticus 23 and sacrifice types.]

If we are in the barge, what are our thoughts as we toss and turn on the meandering waters?
Genesis 8 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And God remembered Noah and all the living, and all the cattle, that were with him on the barge,
and God made a wind pass through over the earth, and the waters subsided.
3e 4C 28
20
2 And the springs of the abyss and the slits of the heavens were stopped,
and the heavy rain from the heavens was restrained.
3e 4B 17
12
3 And the waters turned from over the earth, meandering and turning,
and the waters waned from the limit, a hundred and fifty day span.
3c 4B 15
14
4 And the barge came to rest in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month,
upon the mountains of Ararat.
3e 4C 21
6
5 And the waters were meandering and waning till the tenth new moon.
In the tenth, on the first of the month appeared the tops of the hills.
3e 4B 18
17
6 And it happened at the end of forty days,
and Noah opened the window of the barge that he had constructed.
3e 4B 8
15
7 And he sent the raven.
And it went forth. It went forth and returned endlessly while the waters from over the earth were drying up.
3e 4C 7
18
8 And he sent the dove from him,
to see the dwindling of the waters from off the surface of the ground.
3e 4B 10
15
9 And the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned to him into the barge, for waters were on the face of the whole earth,
and he extended his hand and received her, and had her come to him into the barge.
3d 4C 32
21
10 And he endured the birth yet seven days following,
and again he sent out the dove from the barge.
3d 4B 11
13
11 And the dove came to him at the time of evening and behold a torn leaf of the olive in her mouth.
And Noah knew that the waters had dwindled from over the earth.
3e 4C 24
14
12 And he endured the birth yet seven days following,
and he sent the dove and she did not again return to him any more.
3e 4B 12
15

13 And it happened in the six hundred and first year in the first, on the first of the month, the waters drained from over the earth.
And Noah put aside the covering of the barge and he stared, and behold the surface of the ground was drained.
3e 4C 29
24
14 And in the second month on the twenty seventh day of the month,
the earth was dried up.

15 And God spoke to Noah, and said, 3e 3g 11
16 g Go forth from the barge,
you and your wife and your children and the wives of your children with you.
3d 4A 5
16
17 All the living that are with you, from all flesh of fowl and of beast, and among every creeper that creeps upon the earth, bring out with you,
and let them teem in the earth and be fruitful and multiply over the earth.
3c 4B 34
16
18 So Noah went forth,
and his children and his wife and the wives of his children with him.
3d 4A 5
11
19 All the living, every creeper, and all the fowl, all creepers upon the earth,
of their families, came forth from the barge.
3e 4B 19
12
20 And Noah built an altar to Yahweh,
and took from all the clean beasts and from all the clean fowl, and he offered up burnt offerings on the altar.
3d 4B 10
28
21 And Yahweh smelled a restful fragrance, and Yahweh said to his heart, Not again will I slight any more the ground on behalf of the earthling, for the heart of the earthling is trouble, evil from its youth.
And not again will I strike any more all the living, as I have done.

seed and harvest, and cold and warmth, and summer and autumn, and day and night will not cease.
