Isaiah 8

People told me that these nonsense names were untranslatable. Such is not the case. Take care what you are told. As some great systems thinker said - It's not what you don't know that hurts you, it's what you know that isn't so.  Anyway, the name means plenty-of-trouble-brewing, right?

The children that Yahweh has given me... The word is ילד, could be newborns, or juveniles, or toddlers (I was tempted - given the two grandchildren staying with us oldies these past three months!) or begotten since I have used children for בן. This verse 18 is a sudden insight of the prophet about his role as teacher.

22 verses in this chapter in the Greek. 23 in the Hebrew. In the 23rd I have left the play in English of make light (deny קלל) and make heavy (glorify כבד). The beginning I assume is a recall of the initial move into the land. Where today (in the story) we have pending exile and restoration with intimations of other things to which the story ultimately points.

Note the twitter account for the necromancers and the tendency to anger when hungry.

Seriously, it is not really clear who is the subject of the section from verse 21 to 22. I have switched back to masculine singular in the last verse where the subject is again unspecified (perhaps Yahweh), but not the same subject as the prior two verses.

Ezekiel 5

It is somewhat difficult to say much about this terrible prophecy. From a language point of view, it is pretty straightforward. Lots of heat and destruction. I do note that for the preterite, I could probably drop the 'and' connector. It is, however, a syllable in the music.

Isaiah 7

I did not plan this passage for the Advent / Christmas season. It just happened that way. I am surprised at what I find. The prophecy is political. There is no 'sign' as such (apart from the names of the children). A young woman is pregnant and gives birth. Ahaz has to wait till a child grows up, but presumably his fear was more immediate. Isaiah seems to be making fun of him. Since Ahaz never seems to have been able to refuse evil and choose the good, he would have had to wait a long time. As much as 65 years before Ephraim is dismayed, חתת. And anyone who has been 65 will know there are plenty of failures in the task of choosing the good and refusing the evil.

Are there enough synonyms in English for all the types of thorn that seem to be needed for the Hebrew stems? Fortunately, one of the stems unique to Isaiah seems to reduce to another. Quite how שׁית comes from שׁנן I am not sure, but I will take the escape route. I see I do have a spare synonym, but I admit a lot more research into the intent of these wild words is required. Not all brambles are equal. My list at present is this. דרדר thistle, חדק prickly shrub, חוח thorn, נעצוץ thorn-bush, קוץ bramble, bristle, שׁמר spike, שׁנן gibe.

The English lemma routine needs quite a bit of shaking down and the categorization of words by domain is very rough in places. You can envisage a very messy finish line for the reading part of this project, lemmata, roots, and stems everywhere...

I have a question outstanding to my coach on עמ לא ... כי לא construction. These conjunctions seem very flexible in their usage. Ahaz has a name that is also the stem for hold fast, or grasp. He should find faithfulness easier than he does (verse 9). The sense of verse 9 per my coach is: The verse uses the two verb permutations to indicate a reciprocal action: If you do not believe [in the covenant between God and Israel], then the covenant promises to David will not be fulfilled with regard to you.

So here is a challenge for the strict reader. How will I reflect the hiphil and niphal here?

Project status

Isaiah and Ezekiel are the only two books with more than 30 chapters remaining. So I am pushing these two down. Isaiah remains different. My guesswork is only as high as 43% at the moment. The more of this prophet I do, the better the guesses will be. (Perhaps!) I see that some of its verses are very like the language of Kings and so a few verses are almost done when I get to them. But most are single word guesses. We have read and guessed enough of the body of this literature (70%) to say that Isaiah's language is unique in these areas.

I am down to fewer that 50 puzzle pieces that I don't have an initial domain and subdomain for. But there are still over 18,000 pieces that have no guess at all.  Many of these are probably person and location names. Some of the others that I think are known through a semantic domain and even a single or double guess are probably assigned to the wrong stem by the root derivation algorithm (it was less than 80% accurate). Several letter combinations can occur with different stems. E.g. שׁוב and ישׁב have many overlaps in their forms. On a word by word basis there is insufficient information to decide which stem is which. I do not use complex analytical techniques to read these forms with the computer. No Markov chains or probabilities. I would need a team of expert programmers for such stuff. But my algorithms will correct a stem if it is used in a word sequence greater than 2. (Every now and then I wonder if this section of the code is working as it should - but that's a programmer's lifestyle.)

It wasn't long ago (January 2017) that the unknown pieces were double what they are now so we are making progress. Here's a rough manual graph.
Puzzle pieces not yet turned over for the first time - Hebrew Bible, more than 305,000 pieces
Heading towards zero - end of next year perhaps
X axis is number of days ago
On the gross measurement front, we have 297 chapters to go. Next on my list is Isaiah 7. Highest on the list (most words already guessed) is Joshua 11 but it will probably wait till another chapter or two from Ezekiel is done and maybe another from Genesis.

Leviticus 19

Mystery and music permeated my thoughts while working on this chapter on the Torah. A good mystery writer will find a way to illustrate verse 11. It is a suitable evocation of the implications of the commandment. All relationships pinned to truth. Such a writer will be equally helped by verse 35. Not to mention verse 2, the ideal of the detective who will not submit to the techniques that betray truth.

Every now and then one comes across a technical term that comes up and one is stumped as to how to interpret the tongue. One such occurs 3 times in verse 19, a principle of not mixing things that are different.  The root is כלא and the ending dual. I have ended up with doubly confined (after removing confine as a gloss from my rendition of the speeches of Yahweh in Job). It is clear that we have paid no attention to this issue today, with clothes, or interbreeding, or with DNA sequencing and splicing. There is perhaps a principle here that I am blind to. Perhaps in the spirit of the circular structure the sense is parallel to verse 17 in some fashion.

In verse 20 I find no scourging שׁוט. The only verb in the glosses for the stem בקר as used in verse 20 that I have is reflect. This is a puzzling usage. I suspect a 17th century bias against women for the scourge of KJV. JB has "the man is to be answerable for infringement of rights." (This is a 20th century rewrite). Compare Psalms 27:4, Proverbs 20:25, 27:19, 2 Kings 16:15, Ezra 5:17 (Aramaic). The common use of the word is for morning or for oxen or herd. What to do with this word?

Here is an answer: The expression ביקורת תהיה in this case is in the sense of "an inquiry will be held". In modern Hebrew, we still use the word לבקר in the sense of "to criticize" and "to oversee" (the state Ombudsman, for example, is known as מבקר המדינה).

The inquiry in this case is whether the copulation was consensual or not; the compensation and/or fine that must be imposed on the man). The reason why this issue is mentioned here is that their congress is a type of a mixture of two different things that must not be mixed -- a free man and a slave. [Or so say the Jewish commentators.]

Note how morning becomes reflection - time has passed. This example alone teaches us how to reflect on Torah.

Verse 23 - very awkward phrasing. JB has, You will regard its fruit as its foreskin. This probably gets the idea across but it is not the word order or the words. The direct object marker precedes its fruit. And regard is acting as a helping verb to let foreskin itself act as a verb. It is an odd image. Creation is seen as immensely fruitful but the fruitfulness is to be seen as costly, not as automatic or instantly obtained. A bit more discipline than our instant society expects.

Verse 24 - praises may well be a new classification of offerings. Here too the atnach interrupts subject and object, a rare thing. I have left fruit on the rest note.

Verse 28 - very long first half with the rest note on among you. The reminder, a refrain throughout this section, is in this case the brief Ani Adonai A g# e. The longer refrain is in the music below - emphasis on the final syllable - your.
Refrain on several verses in Leviticus 19
The refrain suggests as its completion: the second half of verse 36. This verse I have left in Hebrew word order untouched so it can be sung note by note in Hebrew or English with each note corresponding to the same word in both languages.
Leviticus 19:36 using the key developed by Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura
I do not explicitly set each verse to the music. The extra time would hold me back. I am anxious to get through the reading at least once. But there is much to learn from using the music as an aid to close reading when the text is read in Hebrew or English. Slow is important. Drama also. Shape and the underlying harmonic structure cannot be heard if it is rushed. We await more arrangers with modal imagination to use this deposit of ancient creativity as a stimulus to new music.

Ezra 5

Aramaic is not familiar to me. Its parsing varies from Hebrew binyanim. Construct is often explicitly helped by a preposition. Its words have many similar meanings if not identical but there are many overlaps that slow my reading down. In the Hebrew chapters, a verse takes a minute or two to read, because generally many of the words have already been guessed based on pattern recognition by the computer. In the Aramaic chapters, every new word is an exploration.

In Aramaic chapters, the pattern recognition chooses from them first, but then drops into the Hebrew patterns where it finds very few alike. That is an interesting result in itself. For those it does find, one can read into what the word seems to mean from the context, but it seems more fun to imagine the two languages drifting apart from each other and the meanings of words carrying unexpected overtones. Example: סתר, hide, or secret I was tempted to render secreted, but eventually went with the commonplace did away with. Sure it was destroyed. But one might imagine that it was also hidden in an alternative reality for a period.

1 And the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Judeans who were in Judea and in Jerusalem,
in the name of the God of Israel, to them.

and with them, the prophets of God confirming them.

Cyrus the king set a warrant to build this house of God.

14 ~ And also the vessels of the house of God of gold and silver that Nebuchadnezzar had appropriated from the temple that was in Jerusalem and had escorted them to the temple of Babel,
Cyrus the king had them appropriated from the temple of Babel, and they were provided to Sheshbazzar, by name, whom he had set as viceroy.

15 And he said to him, Bear these vessels. Go. Stow them in the temple that was in Jerusalem,
and let the house of God be built in its place.

16 Then this Sheshbazzar arrived. He provided the foundation of the house of God that is in Jerusalem,
and from then and till now it has been in building, but it is not whole.

17 And now if to the king it be good to reflect in the house of the depositories of the king, that is there in Babel, whether it be so that from Cyrus the king was set the warrant to build this house of God in Jerusalem,
then let the resolution of the king on this be sent to us.

Joshua 16

More on the borders. Interesting that forced labour exists here between different classes of people. Plus ça change.
