This is such a formative chapter.

As I mistook one of the placings of the Atnah, I recalled that the text in the scrolls is unpointed. The cantor must decide where the rest is to be. And the rest of the shape. I read in Jacobson that there are 'rules' but I think also I have seen his 'rules' broken. At least once, the atnah left only one word in the second 'half' of a verse. It's not hard to find them. And would you know when reading that there is no rest? (I'm sure you might - but perhaps not for the same reasons the first accent 'composer' put them in.)

Reading the unpointed text is a compositional act requiring enormous look-ahead capacity. If my thesis that the existing accents are significant over many verses, then the job is not feasible at sight. And there is little doubt in my mind that there is evidence of non-random significance for accents across multiple verses. The examples I have contradict the traditional view of grammatical decomposition and what Wickes calls 'continuous dichotomy'.

What have I plagiarized?

It has occurred to me that I should acknowledge where I get my words, if indeed that is possible. Someone said to me, why translate the Bible? Hasn't it already been done? And yes it has. But I didn't do it and I wondered what the decisions were by those who did do it. And I don't make the same decisions some of the time.

I was raised on the King James version, and I still read it. It is conveniently decomposed by the Blue Letter Bible site. But I highly dislike the standard glossaries because for me they are too free with synonyms and they fail to imitate recurring sounds. I am not sure where I got this idea from. I am also not sure if language really works concordantly but it is concordance that I seek (though I have labeled it as impossible). I seek it not for its own sake, but for the repeating sounds that define something related to intent.

The BLB site uses the 19th century Strong's glossary. (Strong's numbering system is an early attempt at identity for a stem. It has been and continues to be seriously abused. It is an inefficient and insufficient abbreviation for the language. A unique identifier is fine, but it should be hidden from the user of a system. In this case it is more finely detailed than the lemma form of the stems and should never be considered in its own sequential order.)

BLB has a clever design but is seriously cluttered with free texts and promotional material that should be ignored. It also attempts to pronounce individual words. This is a thorough waste of resources and is no substitute for the music of the language.

I have several other glossaries:

• Gesenius (hardly ever use it),
• BDB (Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon, Hendrickson, 2001),
• HALOT (A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, Brill 1988, Ed. Holladay 1988)
• and a Latin one (Veteris Testamenti Concordantiae Hebraicae atque Chaldaicae, Sumptibus Schacken Hierosolymis, 1944).

The Latin one often suggests glosses that are different from the traditional, but I am not actually that free, since concordance demands that I not allow an English gloss to map onto multiple Hebrew roots. It is the roots that I have sought. The traditional glossaries are a starting point. When I have finished, I will have a complete set of roots and other building blocks of the language. (Anyone who knows any Hebrew will realize that some words don't really have a root so what do I do?)

So I get my glosses first from tradition, then I correct the failures in concordance that I see. I use the glossaries, the stated derivations to some extent, and two tools, Scripture4all.org (a convenient confirmation of the use of prefixes and suffixes) and Google synonyms, besides my own inventions. I refer to other translations sometimes: Jerusalem Bible, Revised English Bible, RSV, NRSV, NIV, Mechon-Mamre, and I have a few others lying around whose initials I forget.

I am not a member of any translation committee. I read and write for myself. I have, I believe, known something of that indefinable kindness that is my rendering for the Hebrew chesed (חסד). I write so that maybe some might read and escape from rote learning and dogmatic certainty. I don't have any theological ax to grind. To some extent as a child who grew up in an Anglican school post-holocaust, I write and read to resolve the false barriers between Christianity and Judaism. Because there is no doubt to me that they are false. I make no attempt though to define them or their contradictions. That would simply lead to more distracting arguments.

My assumptions are at least:

• that language can be used in a limited fashion to point to love, and as Deuteronomy does, to command it,
• that music is a key ingredient,
• and that humans are quite good at making a mess of things and insisting on their own way to the detriment of others.

My knowledge is limited. I hope I welcome correction. I will argue if I think it is worth it.

I think there is a land that is good and that I inhabit great cities that I have not built. In that sense I am dependent on many millions of builders and many generations of scholars and translators. I have little to add but I must do it. I could stop and one day I will have to, but for now I continue.

It's not a simple process. That I can tell you. And for those of you who are sure, maybe you better become unsure, for some kinds of being sure are injurious. Remember what Qohelet said about going to church. I didn't plagiarize that verse but I am dependent on Dr Seuss for my smiles.

Zechariah 8

Encouraged חזק is the word following the successful copying of a book of the Bible by a scribe. And the scribe then writes control counts for words, verses, and chapters on the page of the manuscript. We could use resolved also. But in this same chapter, I think I would preserve the concordance. I find the last verse ambiguous. Who is encouraged? Why not both parties?

I hear echoes of Psalm 85 in this chapter. The two chapters share about 25% of their words in total. In verses 7 to 12, we find salvation, dwell, truth, righteousness, peace, yield and produce in the same sequence as in Psalm 85:10-14 + a few other shared words - again about 25% of the words in this section. I wonder if the Psalmist was writing based on the prophet's promise?

Thoughts that occurred to me while reading this. I find such thoughts very hard to express.

Who 'takes hold' of whose garment hem?

Zechariah writes at the time of the restoration from exile in Babel (Babylon). Do we not all experience exile in some fashion?

Is it wonderful in Yahweh's eyes today, the state of Jerusalem? It is a hope, a patient expectation, that something can be done to alleviate the tension.

The gamboling in the plazas is even moot in more peaceful places as irrational fears grip common experience.

Notice the appeal to commerce. There should be a wage for earthling and for beast. It is so easy for every one to be set loose against everyone else.

I hope that appeals to self-interest will be rejected by electorates everywhere for good reason.

Yet people need their children, the crop, and the harvest, i.e. the economy - all people including the homeless and the refugee, the ones who are like me and the ones who are not. Don't trust the people who appeal to your baser instincts, fear and self-preservation. We cannot preserve ourselves. We can, however, help and encourage others and be encouraged by them. Don't trust vague appeals to freedom. We are not to be free from responsibility but rather free to respond.

Deuteronomy 11

The music of Deuteronomy shows the relationship between distant verses that I have pointed out in other contexts. Verse 7 beginning on the 6th note above the tonic, closes the parenthesis begun in verse 2.

The deeds in the parenthesis are those which all must come to realize as their own, but the children do not yet know how much trouble they can get into. Yes I read this as my experience recapitulating the canonical. That is how I obey these words to speak in them, i.e. to speak this language. In this act, there are many things I cannot express and this is good for me. There will be many situations that I will avoid (though there may also be those I should have avoided) because of the language that I am trained in. But it was not a rote situation. It is one that is a long road of what I hope was growth. The language does not allow me to think some thoughts and it encourages me to think of others rather than self. Whether I do or have done this or not is not for me to say.

I do not use the word curse (v26) in contrast to blessing. The word is not curse, but denial. It is reciprocal rather than condemnatory. Love that leads to responsible freedom, not freedom from responsibility but freedom to respond, is not a love that curses as frequently as the traditional translations imply. This is the love that enables the maturing of the earthling, the one and the many.

Notice the strange places where the major rest occurs. Not every verse makes sense in smooth English. Some verses (e.g. verse 2) seem to have missing words and generally, except for the verb to be, I don't fill in the spaces for you. Perhaps verse 2 really is missing a word. Anyway - it's not about children exactly though they take part, it's about the maturing determination of the human who has faced difficulties and is yet going to follow the words of Moses. (If you have followed Jesus or Christ or Paul, or all of them, then you will know that Moses is not irrelevant. If you haven't, well, enjoy the ride.)

Numbers 17

If one dies, all have died. (2 Corinthians 5:14)

To what end is death appointed for all living? I expect we all come to this question eventually. The death of Jesus, Paul interprets as the death of all so that in the resurrection of Jesus, all are come again to life. He is not thinking religiously as if according to 17th century (or 21st century) protestant thinking about some distant 'time', but he is thinking the present. The only time that we have. And he among others in these traditions, clearly sees that it is not how many people you can injure that matters, but how many people you can heal.

There is a surprising twist to the rebellion of Korah, finally commented on in this chapter. The significance of the word 'approach' is explained in the letter to the Hebrew.

Who stands between the dead and the living? Is he alive or dead? Vigilant is a nod to Jeremiah. You have to read to the end to get it.

2 Kings 20 - ill to the point of death

As aged parents, we could get quite personal here. Did we turn around to the house wall when we were will to the point of death? Did we get another 15 years and trouble for our grandchildren? Now here's where prayer is more a determined attitude than a form of words or specific thoughts. Where does responsibility begin and end? Political comment: In the week containing July 18th, never once was the word 'responsibility' heard in my house from a public voice, though we listened and read the media daily. In the week containing July 25th, we heard the word frequently.

But have we also walked with Yahweh as Hezekiah said he did? Now here's a coincidence. This log on the beach where we were walking is just half a kilometer from our house. We were walking with a cane, and we noted the extent of the learning that a person must do if one is cured from being lame. O those ankles and knees and the balance of the trunk and binocular vision.

A message from the beach at clover point as we were learning to walk again

[As for the science of shadows, maybe look to the inconstancy of the proton charge radius. (Do I care? At least Hezekiah could tell the time.)] There are some textual inconsistencies between 2 Kings and Isaiah that are uninspiring. One spurious and one missing ה. See if you can find them in the two posts. One is a missing qere. The other a missing direction (toward) signaled by the heh following a location. I have noted their places with [] in the text.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ קְח֖וּ דְּבֶ֣לֶת תְּאֵנִ֑ים וַיִּקְח֛וּ וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ עַֽל־הַשְּׁחִ֖ין וַיֶּֽחִי	7		And Isaiah said, Take a pressed lump of figs. So they took and they put it over the ulcer and he lived.	3d	4B	15 13
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶֽל־יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ מָ֣ה א֔וֹת כִּֽי־יִרְפָּ֥א יְהוָ֖ה לִ֑י וְעָלִ֛יתִי בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה	8		And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, What is a sign that Yahweh will heal me, and that I will ascend on the third day to the house of Yahweh?	3d	4C	20 12
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְשַׁעְיָ֗הוּ זֶה־לְּךָ֤ הָאוֹת֙ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֚י יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֵּ֑ר הָלַ֤ךְ הַצֵּל֙ עֶ֣שֶׂר מַֽעֲל֔וֹת אִם־יָשׁ֖וּב עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת	9		And Isaiah said, This to you is the sign from Yahweh that Yahweh will do the thing that he spoke, will the shadow proceed ten degrees or return ten degrees?	3e	4C	30 17
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יְחִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ נָקֵ֣ל לַצֵּ֔ל לִנְט֖וֹת עֶ֣שֶׂר מַעֲל֑וֹת לֹ֣א כִ֔י יָשׁ֥וּב הַצֵּ֛ל אֲחֹרַנִּ֖ית עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת	10		And Hezekiah said, It is slight for a shadow to bend ten degrees. No. But let the shadow return backward ten degrees.	3d	4B	19 15
וַיִּקְרָ֛א יְשַׁעְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּ֣שֶׁב אֶת־הַצֵּ֗ל בַּֽ֠מַּעֲלוֹת אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרְדָ֜ה בְּמַעֲל֥וֹת אָחָ֛ז אֲחֹֽרַנִּ֖ית עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת	11		And Isaiah the prophet called to Yahweh, and he turned the shadow (by the degrees that it had gone down on the degrees of Ahaz) backward ten degrees.	3d	4B	13 29
בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֡יא שָׁלַ֡ח בְּרֹאדַ֣ךְ בַּ֠לְאֲדָן בֶּֽן־בַּלְאֲדָ֧ן מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֛ל סְפָרִ֥ים וּמִנְחָ֖ה אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֔ע כִּ֥י חָלָ֖ה חִזְקִיָּֽהוּ	12		At that time Berodak-Baladan child of Baladan king of Babel sent correspondence and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah was ill.	3c	4B	31 10
וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע עֲלֵיהֶם֮ חִזְקִיָּהוּ֒ וַיַּרְאֵ֣ם אֶת־כָּל־בֵּ֣ית נְכֹתֹ֡ה אֶת־הַכֶּסֶף֩ וְאֶת־הַזָּהָ֨ב וְאֶת־הַבְּשָׂמִ֜ים וְאֵ֣ת ׀ שֶׁ֣מֶן הַטּ֗וֹב וְאֵת֙ בֵּ֣ית כֵּלָ֔יו וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִמְצָ֖א בְּאֽוֹצְרֹתָ֑יו לֹֽא־הָיָ֣ה דָבָ֗ר אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא־הֶרְאָ֧ם חִזְקִיָּ֛הוּ בְּבֵית֖וֹ וּבְכָל־מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ	13		And Hezekiah broadcast to them, and he showed them all the house of his fortune, the silver and the gold, and the spices and the finest oil, and the house of his vessels, and all that was found in his treasuries. There was no thing that Hezekiah did not show them in his house or in all his governance.	3c	4B	55 21
וַיָּבֹא֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֔יא אֶל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו מָ֥ה אָמְר֣וּ ׀ הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה וּמֵאַ֙יִן֙ יָבֹ֣אוּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ מֵאֶ֧רֶץ רְחוֹקָ֛ה בָּ֖אוּ מִבָּבֶֽל	14		And Isaiah the prophet came to king Hezekiah, and said to him, What did these persons say and from where did they come to you? And Hezekiah said, From a land far off they came, from Babel.	3c	4B	18 41
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מָ֥ה רָא֖וּ בְּבֵיתֶ֑ךָ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חִזְקִיָּ֗הוּ אֵ֣ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְּבֵיתִי֙ רָא֔וּ לֹא־הָיָ֥ה דָבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־הִרְאִיתִ֖ם בְּאֹצְרֹתָֽי	15		And he said, What did they see in your house? And Hezekiah said, All that is in my house they saw. There was no thing that I did not show them in my treasuries.	3d	4C	10 30
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ שְׁמַ֖ע דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה	16		And said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of Yahweh.	3e	4A	12 6
הִנֵּה֮ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִים֒ וְנִשָּׂ֣א ׀ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּבֵיתֶ֗ךָ וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר אָצְר֧וּ אֲבֹתֶ֛יךָ עַד־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה בָּבֶ֑לָה לֹֽא־יִוָּתֵ֥ר דָּבָ֖ר אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה	17		Behold days are coming and all that is in your house and that which your fathers had in the treasury until this day will be lifted up to Babel. No thing will remain, says Yahweh.	3c	4B	33 9
וּמִבָּנֶ֜יךָ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יֵצְא֧וּ מִמְּךָ֛ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תּוֹלִ֖יד יִקָּ֑חוּ וְהָיוּ֙ סָֽרִיסִ֔ים בְּהֵיכַ֖ל מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל	18		And of your children who emerge from you, which you will beget, they will be taken away. And they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babel.	3c	4A	18 13
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶֽל־יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ ט֥וֹב דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּ֑רְתָּ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הֲל֛וֹא אִם־שָׁל֥וֹם וֶאֱמֶ֖ת יִהְיֶ֥ה בְיָמָֽי	19		And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, Good. The word of Yahweh that you have spoken. And he said, Is it so? Except there will be peace and truth in my days.	3d	4C	22 16
וְיֶ֨תֶר דִּבְרֵ֤י חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ וְכָל־גְּב֣וּרָת֔וֹ וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֗ה אֶת־הַבְּרֵכָה֙ וְאֶת־הַתְּעָלָ֔ה וַיָּבֵ֥א אֶת־הַמַּ֖יִם הָעִ֑ירָה הֲלֹא־הֵ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה	20		And the remaining words of Hezekiah and all his valour, and that he made the blessing pool, and a conduit and brought water into the city, are they not written in the record of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?	3d	4C	38 20
וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֑יו וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו	21		And Hezekiah was laid out with his ancestors, and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.	3d	4A	11 10
