Ezekiel 6

What to do with חלל, usually rendered by me as related to profane. JB just leaves the word out (rendered as men). KJV renders it frequently as slain. I have, true to my rules, not allowed slain, slew, since this for me and others is הרג. And in this case I have managed to keep separated the various stems around slaying, killing, dying. A dead body will render a person unclean and so unable to come before the holy places, i.e. profane (pro-fanus). Perhaps this is where profanity implies death. So bear it in mind that death is in view.

Scripture4all, a very useful site for a quick check of literal grammar, has wound for חלל, but I have מחץ for wound. Perhaps it is a symbolic wound or death allowing the one so afflicted still to know that 'I am Yahweh'. Unlikely in this historical case, but may be applied by analogy to the death of Jesus for those who use such power to escape from sin. Both the violence of the conquest (Joshua) and the violence of the exile (the later prophets) can be used by analogy in this way.

Wondering about idols etc, where is it that we find ourselves relaxing, the tension lessened, or the tension increased? If we are relaxed (because the market is going up), is this the 'restful fragrance' that the idol experiences? (The experiencing is in us of course since the idol, be it money or estate or work, has no feeling apart from us.)

The refrain '... will know that I am Yahweh' occurs 39 times in Ezekiel. The refrain is also in Exodus where it is Egypt who will know (5 times). Also once in Deuteronomy, twice in Joel. Leviticus has the statement 'for I am Yahweh your God' 22 times. The prophet reminds us of Torah. I searched for these manually using אני followed by יהוה as my search arguments. Then I searched within this for either אלוהם or a form of ידע. I may have missed a couple, but this emphasis in each of Leviticus and Ezekiel is definitely present. These are respectively among their favorite phrases and no other book uses them to the extent they do.

How revealing is it that grace is denied to the seven nations that are described in the first 3 verses?

I don't know if Mizpah and Mizpeh are meant to be the same but they are not spelled the same when the vowels are included.

Ezekiel 18

This text, like much of TNK, was written largely for the male. It could be seen as quite anti feminist. But perhaps this is simply because the male is largely responsible for sin in the world. He spends much of his time blaming the female, but he is lying to himself.

So why use it in this chapter? An exercise perhaps. Can one distinguish in the reading the it that is done from the it that is doing? I think so. With a little slowing down of the reading.

There is a peculiar use of אח in the middle of this perception into consequences. It is the kin of a deed not of the doer. אח is used almost metaphorically, but it doesn't work and JB considers it a mistake. The LXX also reads it differently. The child commits sins and does not do the good things of the parent. So we can't have it doing kin-like deeds.

It is tedious to keep up the it/its usage when doing this close translation. All languages I have seen appear to have this problem. My computer is even getting confused and suggesting to me that I have a parameter that says whether or not to copy this style. Perhaps I have made the point sufficiently.

This chapter is a substantial thought process on the problem of individual sin. It is highly repetitive and its question is not answered. There appears to be no adequate answer. We all like predictable rules and consequences and the idea of an accumulating store of good works. But if we can't rest on our withered laurels, how do we change our hearts? We equally agree that the parent and child axis should not be such a burden, but we easily blame ourselves for our children's problems, and I have not been above blaming my parents for mine either! Both TNK and NT offer new hearts but maybe we would like them later on. (After Augustine, Make me chaste, Lord, but not yet.)

On the other hand, perhaps I am too pessimistic, baptism does promise grafting into the resurrected body of the Anointed. Maybe we should just assume that truth and get on with it. (Love God and do what you will! Augustine again.) This still leaves us with the difficulty of dealing with the news. Like the land, all beings belong to Yahweh. That should make us hopeful.

Genesis 16

Hagar conceives and Sarai is slighted. Note the use of המס violence (JB insult, KJV wrong) in Sarai's speech. Like all married couples, there is a touch of friction in this relationship. The Sarah-Hagar axis is equally complex and not such good news for a weaker person in an unequal and abusive relationship. I find myself wondering if this Abraham-Hagar axis is reflecting the issues with Leviticus 19 which we have recently read.

Now this Yishmaeil (however you want to spell it), who is he but the presence of the world (Egypt) in (ב) all of us, and against (על) the presence of all of us, his kin. But ultimately, salvation is for the world, us wild asses, not just for the child of the promise, (who of course has his part in bringing the message of the messenger of Yahweh to the whole world).

Why is it that prepositions are so hard to read? Against is a possible (but not the most common) rendering of ב but in is a rare gloss for על. So my reading of this passage should be perplexing even as Hagar expresses the enigma of seeing the one who sees her.

Who knew that Sarai's Egyptian handmaid, rejected for her fertility, was also a post modern philosopher?

The woman gives birth to a child for (ל) the father. This phrasing is quite common. It is not a modern reading of birth. Does the use of the preposition ל (of, for, to). Tell us something of the hopes of the ancient male and female?

Ezekiel 33

There is an interesting pair of words in the final verses, playing on the idea of a voice as beautiful, using the word commonly rendered as pipes. (Psalm 150:4, Genesis 4:21) A tenor with good pipes is sometimes an asset, but here the pipes of the people are contrasted with their love of the beauty of their own voice.

מַשָּׂ֖א מִדְבַּר־יָ֑ם כְּסוּפ֤וֹת בַּנֶּ֙גֶב֙ לַֽחֲלֹ֔ף מִמִּדְבָּ֣ר בָּ֔א מֵאֶ֖רֶץ נוֹרָאָֽה	1		A load about the wilderness of the sea. As storm-winds in the south renew, from the wilderness one comes from a fearful land.	3e	4C	5 19

כִּ֣י כֹ֥ה אָמַ֛ר אֵלַ֖י אֲדֹנָ֑י לֵ֚ךְ הַעֲמֵ֣ד הַֽמְצַפֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִרְאֶ֖ה יַגִּֽיד	6	B	For thus says my Lord to me, Go. Have the lookout stand. What he sees let him make clear.	3d	4C	9 13

וּשְׁאָ֧ר מִסְפַּר־קֶ֛שֶׁת גִּבּוֹרֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־קֵדָ֖ר יִמְעָ֑טוּ כִּ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל דִּבֵּֽר	17		And the residue of the bow count, the valiant of the children of Qeidar, will be insignificant, for Yahweh the God of Israel has spoken.	3c	4A	15 11
