Joshua 22

I am sure I have read this before and equally sure that I got next to nothing from it.

This is religious politics continuing a process that began before the initial crossing of the Jordan. I know also that many people and institutions explained to me just how important it is to conform to religious practice - because any non-conformity affects the whole body. It's not the only place in Scripture where this principle is noted. Social control and common access to the gates of heaven are the issues of religion. There's something odd about the implications of this aspect of religious control of the world. Certainly there are important functions in social control. We must learn to live together or we will not live. And the whole problem of agreed governance and appropriate institutions to manage our disagreements is evident before us every day in the news. We are somewhat ungovernable in the face of both heaven and earth.

So Joshua begins with commendation of the 2.5 bands (sceptres), Reuben, Gad and Manasseh but then quickly moves to the outrage by the western groups led by the priest that they erected an altar where they crossed the Jordan. But the bands east of the Jordan defend themselves by appealing to the tendency to separation that subsequent generations might have. Does this justify a multiplicity of religious practices? Interesting to me that the bands across the Jordan to the east are said to have delivered their children from Yahweh by their arguments. Note that האלהים occurs only once and that in the final verse.

This ante-penultimate chapter reflects a number of phrases in chapter 1. We can sense the onset of the final cadences. (But whether Joshua is a symphony remains to be heard.)

וַעֲשָׂרָ֤ה נְשִׂאִים֙ עִמּ֔וֹ נָשִׂ֨יא אֶחָ֜ד נָשִׂ֤יא אֶחָד֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָ֔ב לְכֹ֖ל מַטּ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאִ֨ישׁ רֹ֧אשׁ בֵּית־אֲבוֹתָ֛ם הֵ֖מָּה לְאַלְפֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	14		And ten principals with him, one principal, one principal per ancestral house for all the branches of Israel, and each the head of the house of their ancestors themselves, to the thousands of Israel.	3c	4C	27 15

וְאַתֶּם֙ תָּשֻׁ֣בוּ הַיּ֔וֹם מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וְהָיָ֗ה אַתֶּ֞ם תִּמְרְד֤וּ הַיּוֹם֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה וּמָחָ֕ר אֶֽל־כָּל־עֲדַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִקְצֹֽף	18		But you, you turn today from following Yahweh, and it is you, you mutiny today against Yahweh, and tomorrow, at all the assembly of Israel, he will rage.	3e	4C	14 24
וְאַ֨ךְ אִם־טְמֵאָ֜ה אֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֗ם עִבְר֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם אֶל־אֶ֨רֶץ אֲחֻזַּ֤ת יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָֽׁכַן־שָׁם֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵאָחֲז֖וּ בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ וּבַֽיהוָ֣ה אַל־תִּמְרֹ֗דוּ וְאֹתָ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־תִּמְרֹ֔דוּ בִּבְנֹֽתְכֶ֤ם לָכֶם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ מִֽבַּלְעֲדֵ֔י מִזְבַּ֖ח יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ	19		And surely, if the land of your holdings is unclean, pass through for yourselves to the land of the holdings of Yahweh, where dwells the dwelling-place of Yahweh, and hold fast among us. And in Yahweh do not mutiny, and with us do not mutiny in building for yourselves an altar apart from the altar of Yahweh our God.	3e	4C	42 35
הֲל֣וֹא ׀ עָכָ֣ן בֶּן־זֶ֗רַח מָ֤עַל מַ֙עַל֙ בַּחֵ֔רֶם וְעַֽל־כָּל־עֲדַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָ֣יָה קָ֑צֶף וְהוּא֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֔ד לֹ֥א גָוַ֖ע בַּעֲוֺנֽוֹ	20		Did not Akan child of Zerach trespass? He trespassed in the ban, and against all the assembly of Israel, there was rage, and he one man. Did he not expire in his iniquity?	3e	4C	26 12
וַֽיַּעֲנוּ֙ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֣ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֔ד וַחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַֽיְדַבְּר֔וּ אֶת־רָאשֵׁ֖י אַלְפֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	21		And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half band of Manasseh answered, and they spoke with the heads of the thousands of Israel.	3e	4B	20 11
אֵל֩ ׀ אֱלֹהִ֨ים ׀ יְהוָ֜ה אֵ֣ל ׀ אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא יֹדֵ֔עַ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל ה֣וּא יֵדָ֑ע אִם־בְּמֶ֤רֶד וְאִם־בְּמַ֙עַל֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה אַל־תּוֹשִׁיעֵ֖נוּ הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה	22		The God of Gods, Yahweh, the God of Gods, Yahweh, he, he knows, and Israel, he, he knows. If it is in mutiny, or if in trespass against Yahweh, do not save us this day,	3e	4C	23 20
לִבְנ֥וֹת לָ֙נוּ֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לָשׁ֖וּב מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְאִם־לְהַעֲל֨וֹת עָלָ֜יו עוֹלָ֣ה וּמִנְחָ֗ה וְאִם־לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת עָלָיו֙ זִבְחֵ֣י שְׁלָמִ֔ים יְהוָ֖ה ה֥וּא יְבַקֵּֽשׁ	23		To build for us an altar to turn from following Yahweh, or if to offer up on it burnt offering and gift, or if to do on it offerings of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself demand.	3e	4C	15 31
וְאִם־לֹ֤א מִדְּאָגָה֙ מִדָּבָ֔ר עָשִׂ֥ינוּ אֶת־זֹ֖את לֵאמֹ֑ר מָחָ֗ר יֹאמְר֨וּ בְנֵיכֶ֤ם לְבָנֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַה־לָּכֶ֕ם וְלַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	24		And if not from anxiety about a matter we have done this, saying, Tomorrow your children will say to our children, saying, What is it to you and to Yahweh, the God of Israel?	3e	4C	16 25
וּגְב֣וּל נָֽתַן־יְ֠הוָה בֵּינֵ֨נוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶ֜ם בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֤ן וּבְנֵי־גָד֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן אֵין־לָכֶ֥ם חֵ֖לֶק בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְהִשְׁבִּ֤יתוּ בְנֵיכֶם֙ אֶת־בָּנֵ֔ינוּ לְבִלְתִּ֖י יְרֹ֥א אֶת־יְהוָֽה	25		And Yahweh gave the border between us and you, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, at the Jordan. There is no share for you in Yahweh. And your children will make our children cease, so as not to fear Yahweh.	3e	4C	32 19
וַנֹּ֕אמֶר נַעֲשֶׂה־נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ לִבְנ֖וֹת אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ לֹ֥א לְעוֹלָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א לְזָֽבַח	26		So we said, Let us make, please, for us to build the altar, not for burnt offerings, and not for sacrifice,	3e	4B	16 9
כִּי֩ עֵ֨ד ה֜וּא בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶ֗ם וּבֵ֣ין דֹּרוֹתֵינוּ֮ אַחֲרֵינוּ֒ לַעֲבֹ֞ד אֶת־עֲבֹדַ֤ת יְהוָה֙ לְפָנָ֔יו בְּעֹלוֹתֵ֥ינוּ וּבִזְבָחֵ֖ינוּ וּבִשְׁלָמֵ֑ינוּ וְלֹא־יֹאמְר֨וּ בְנֵיכֶ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְבָנֵ֔ינוּ אֵין־לָכֶ֥ם חֵ֖לֶק בַּיהוָֽה	27		But a witness it is between us and you and our generations after us, to serve the service of Yahweh in his presence with our burnt offerings and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings, and your children will not say afterwards to our children, There is no share for you in Yahweh.	3e	4C	47 20
וַנֹּ֕אמֶר וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יֹאמְר֥וּ אֵלֵ֛ינוּ וְאֶל־דֹּרֹתֵ֖ינוּ מָחָ֑ר וְאָמַ֡רְנוּ רְא֣וּ אֶת־תַּבְנִית֩ מִזְבַּ֨ח יְהוָ֜ה אֲשֶׁר־עָשׂ֣וּ אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֹ֤א לְעוֹלָה֙ וְלֹ֣א לְזֶ֔בַח כִּי־עֵ֣ד ה֔וּא בֵּינֵ֖ינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶֽם	28		So we said, And it will be that when they say to us or to our generations tomorrow, that we will say, You see the manner of the altar of Yahweh that our ancestors made, not for burnt offerings and not for sacrifice, but a witness it is, between us and you.	3d	4C	20 40

וַיָּ֣שָׁב פִּֽינְחָ֣ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֣ן ׀ וְהַנְּשִׂיאִ֡ים מֵאֵ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־רְאוּבֵן֩ וּמֵאֵ֨ת בְּנֵי־גָ֜ד מֵאֶ֧רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֛ד אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ כְּנַ֖עַן אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּשִׁ֥בוּ אוֹתָ֖ם דָּבָֽר	32		And Phineas, child of Eleazar the priest, turned and the principals, from the children of Reuben and from the children of Gad, from the land of the Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and they returned to them a word.	3c	4B	47 8
וַיִּיטַ֣ב הַדָּבָ֗ר בְּעֵינֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְבָרֲכ֥וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֣א אָמְר֗וּ לַעֲל֤וֹת עֲלֵיהֶם֙ לַצָּבָ֔א לְשַׁחֵת֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֥ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֖ד יֹשְׁבִ֥ים בָּֽהּ	33		And the word was good in the eyes of the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not say to go up against them as a host, to destroy the land that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had settled in.	3d	4C	26 33
וַֽיִּקְרְא֛וּ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֥ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֖ד לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כִּ֣י עֵ֥ד הוּא֙ בֵּֽינֹתֵ֔ינוּ כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה הָאֱלֹהִֽים	34		And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar, But a witness it is between us that Yahweh is the God.	3d	4B	16 14
