Deuteronomy 1

Sometimes it is curious to begin at the beginning. Deuteronomy was the book that a former teacher of mine, Peter Craigie, focused on. I cannot think about that book without remembering Prof. Craigie. I learned too little from him. What a great story teller he was and how he so easily undermined one's own prejudices. I can still remember his story of the confrontation of a Sunday morning walker with a strict pastor on the hills of Scotland. I recall his brogue but cannot imitate it. The issue was 'too much walking on the Sabbath'. And the response from the walker was, there are many things that the Laird and I agree on, but here we differ.

It turns out, a little to my surprise, that Deuteronomy is the book I have done the most on of the 20 or so books that I have not completed. From a guesswork point of view, the computer now thinks it knows about 75% of this book. So - why not start at its beginning. It is also that other book that starts on a note other than the tonic. As if to say: I am continuing a story that, if I have read the first four books, I already know. (Of course I haven't completed the first four - read them in my youth in English, but that's hardly a suitable close reading - too many unquestioned assumptions.)

I am leaving in the column for first note (Fn) when it is not the default. Then you know at least two notes in every verse that has a rest, the first and the rest note (at the 'carriage' return - now there's an archaism). This is a very unhappy chapter, recalling failure in the face of the success to be found in the next generation. What constitutes faith? When is this God with us? And how do we avoid triumphalism?

Deuteronomy 1 Fn Min Max
1 B These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan,
in the wilderness, in the steppe, in the forefront of Suf, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazerot and DiZahab.

to Qadesh-Barnea.

3 And it happened in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month,
Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to everything that Yahweh commanded him, to them,

Moses attempted precisely this instruction, saying,

7 B Face forward and begin your migration, and enter the hill of the Amorites, and to its dwellings in the steppe, on the hill, and in a lowly place, and southward, and in the seaport,
the land of the Canaanite, to Lebanon, to the great river, the river Euphrates.

3d 4C 12

13

13 B Provide for yourselves wise and understanding persons, and known to your bands,
and I will set them as your heads.
3c 4B 20
8
14 And you answered me,
and you said, Good is the thing that you have spoken to do.
3e 4B 6
15

15 And I took the heads of your bands, persons of wisdom and knowledge, and I assigned them as heads over you,
chiefs of thousands and chiefs of hundreds and chiefs of fifties and chiefs of tens and overseers for your bands.
3d 4C 28
29

Hear between your kin, and judge righteously between a person and his kin and his guest.
3e 4C 14
22
17 You will not recognize preference in the judgment. Whether small or great, you will hear. You will not be in terror from the presence of anyone, for judgment is God's himself,
and the word that is too hard for you, you may bring near to me, and I will hear it.
3e 4C 32
18
18 And I commanded you at that time,
all the things that you will do.
3e 4B 10
10
19 And we began to migrate from Horeb, and we walked through all that great and fearful wilderness which you saw, by the way of the hill of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us,
and we entered into Qadesh-Barnea.
3d 4C 49
9

You have arrived at the hill of the Amorites that Yahweh our God has given to us.
3e 4B 6
20

21 ~ See, Yahweh your God has given before you the land.
Go up. Possess as Yahweh the God of your ancestors spoke to you. Do not fear and do not be in disarray.
3c 4C 18
25

22 And you approached me, all of you, and you said, We will send men before us, and they will probe for us the land,
and they will return us a word concerning the way which we should go up to it, and the cities which we will enter into.
3e 4C 30
31

and I took from you twelve persons, one person per band.
3e 4C 9
18
24 And they faced forward and they went up towards the hill and they came to the wadi of Eshkol,
and they surveyed it.
3e 4B 18
5

25 And they took in their hands from the fruit of the land, and they came down to us,
and they returned us a word, and they said, The land is good that Yahweh our God is giving to us.
3e 4C 18
29
26 And you would not consent to go up.
You were provocative with the mandate of Yahweh your God.

27 And you nattered in your tents, and you said, In Yahweh's hatred for us, he brought us forth from the land of Egypt,
to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to exterminate us.
3d 4C 30
16

28 How please are we going up? Our kin have made our hearts melt, saying, A people great and taller than us, cities great and fortified into the heavens,

41 And you answered and you said to me, We have sinned against Yahweh. We ourselves will go up and we will fight all that Yahweh our God has commanded us.
And you had attired each with instruments for battle, and you were primed to go up towards the hill.
3e 4C 37
21

42 And Yahweh said to me, Say to them, Do not go up, and do not fight, for I am not among you,
and you will not be a plague before your enemies.
3e 4C 28
10
43 And I spoke to you, and you did not hear.
You were provocative with the mandate of Yahweh, and presumptuously, and you went up towards the hill.
3e 4B 12
18

44 And the Amorites came forth who inhabit on that hill to encounter you, and they pursued you as do the bees,
and they beat you in Seir, to Utter-Destruction.
3d 4C 33
11
45 And you sat and wept before Yahweh,
but Yahweh would not hear with your voice, and would not give ear to you.
3e 4C 11
16
46 And you settled in Qadesh many days,
as the days which you had already settled.
