Deuteronomy 8

A reprise. Way back in 2012, I sang this at church for the lesson in the early days of my learning the use of the accents. I am surprised it was so long ago. My transcriptions standards are improved but there's still much to do to decide the mode of each chapter and not just to use the default mode. I think the church was also very brave to let the experiments begin.

When I read it today I still feel the love behind the plea of Yahweh to remember the commandment. Am I still intrigued by 'the postponement of the lowest note'?

Honestly, I can't believe this was 4 years ago! Sometimes I have trouble believing anything though.

Do note that the lesson for Thanksgiving (which this is) should start at verse 6, not the middle of a thought, or the middle of the music (also obvious) at verse 7. Why would the church play down the commandment with its choice of lesson. Without the commandment that we are to love God and our neighbour, what do we have? There is no (i.e. it is a non-existent) conflict between commandment and grace. Even if you take commandment as plural (which it isn't in this case), even if you take all as every, legalism is not implied, simply dependence on the instruction (Torah) of God. Who wants to live without God's instruction? (Read the psalms.)

Here's the music with English libretto

Deuteronomy 8
1 All the commandment that I am commanding you today you will keep to do,
so that you will live and increase and go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your ancestors.
20
29
2 And remember all the way which Yahweh your God led you this forty year span in the wilderness,
so that he afflicted you to prove you to know what is in your heart to keep his commandments or not.
30
27
3 And he afflicted you and he let you hunger and he fed you manna that not you did know and your ancestors did not know,
so that he might have you know that not on the bread alone does the earthling live, that on all that emerges from the mouth of Yahweh the earthling lives.
29
35
4 Your dress did not wear out on you and your foot did not blister,
this forty year span.
18
6
5 And you will know with your heart,
that as each of you chastens his child, Yahweh your God chastens you.
9
21
6 And you will keep the commandments of Yahweh your God,
to walk in his ways and to fear him.
13
11
7 For Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of torrents of water springs and abysses emerging in the crevasse and on the hill. 16
21
8 A land of wheat and barley and vine and fig tree and pomegranate,
a land of olive oil and honey.
16
7
9 A land where without meagerness you will eat bread. You will not lack for anything there.
A land whose stones are iron, and from whose hills you will extract brass.
19
21
10 And you will eat and you will be satisfied,
and you will bless Yahweh your God over the good land that he gives to you.
8
23
11 Keep watch for yourself lest you forget Yahweh your God,
so as not to keep his commandments and his judgments and his statutes which I myself have commanded you this day.
15
26
12 Lest you eat and you are satisfied,
and you build good houses and are settled.
7
11
13 And your herds and your flocks increase and silver and gold increase for you,
and all that is yours increases.
18
8
14 And exalted is your heart,
and you forget Yahweh your God who brought you forth from the land of Egypt from the house of servitude.
6
26
15 Who led you in the great and fearful wilderness of incinerate-snake and scorpion and drought where there is no water,
who brought forth for you, water from the rock of flint.
31
12
16 Who fed you manna in the wilderness that your ancestors did not know,
so that he afflicted you and so that he would prove you to do you good in your later time.
18
23
17 And you say in your heart,
My power and the sheer numbers of my hands have made for me this wealth.
8
16
18 But remember Yahweh your God, for he is this one who gives to you power to make wealth,
so that he may uphold his covenant which he swore to your ancestors as on this day.
25
22
19 And it will happen that if forgetting you forget Yahweh your God and you walk after other gods and serve them and worship them,
I testify among you today that perishing you will perish.
41
14
20 As the nations which Yahweh made perish before your face so you will perish,
inasmuch as you did not hear in the voice of Yahweh your God.
