1 Samuel 30

There is almost order to my sequence here. I was going to do 2 Samuel 3, then backed off to 2 Samuel 2, realized I did not know who was who, and so backed off further to 1 Samuel 30. This fascinating chapter reflects the metaphor of Amalek as the flesh. The flesh is equally the battle of Judah and Philistia together. The river name is curious. I could also have called it the Good News wadi, for בשר is the stem for both flesh and good news.

Who wins in the battle and who scores the spoil when the leader, even surrounded by evil and worthless persons, overcomes the flesh?

Next in line probably 2 Samuel 2 since 2 Samuel is the only book remaining with more than 7 chapters still to read.

1 Samuel 30 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it was when David and his men came to Tsiqlag on the third day,
and the Amalekites were pillaging to the south and to Tsiqlag, and they had struck Tsiqlag, and cremated it in the fire.

2 And they had made the women return that were in it from the least and to the greatest. They had not put to death any,
but had driven, and they went their own way.

3 And David and his men went to the city, and behold, it was incinerated in the fire,
and their wives and their sons and their daughters were taken captive.

4 And David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept,
until there was no power in them to weep.

6 And there was much trouble for David, for the people talked of jettisoning him, for provoked was the integrity of all the people, each over his sons and over his daughters,
but David was resolved in Yahweh his God.

11

7 And David said to Abiatar the priest, child of Ahimelech, Come close please to me with the ephod.
And Abiatar came close with the ephod to David.

8 And David asked in Yahweh, saying, Will I pursue after this raiding party? Will I overtake them?
And he said to him, Pursue, for to overtake you will overtake, and to deliver you will deliver.

10 And David pursued, he and four hundred men.
And two hundred men kept the foothold, who were as carcasses, from passing beyond the wadi of the flesh.

12 And they gave him a slice of a pressed lump and two bunches of raisins, and he ate. And his spirit returned to him,
for he had not eaten bread and not imbibed water three days and three nights.

13 And David said to him, Whose are you and where are you from?
And he said, An Egyptian youth am I, a servant to an Amalekite, and my lord has forsaken me, for I have been ill three days.

15 And David said to him, Can you bring me down to this raiding party?
And he said, Swear to me in God, not to put me to death and not to imprison me in the hand of my lord, and I will bring you down to this raiding party.
3e 4C 17

16 And he brought him down. And behold, they had abandoned themselves over the face of the whole earth,
eating and imbibing and feasting with all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.
3d 4C 18
33

17 And David struck them from twilight and to evening the next day,
and not a person escaped of them, except four hundred youngsters who rode on the camels and withdrew.
3c 4C 19
28
18 And David delivered all that Amalek had taken,
and his two wives, David delivered.

19 And no one lagged behind of them from the youngest and to the greatest, and to sons and daughters, or from the spoil and to all that they had taken of theirs.
David returned it all.

20 And David took all the flock and the herd.
They drove before that livestock and said, This is the spoil of David.
3e 4B 13

21 And David came to the two hundred persons that had been like carcasses walking after David, that they had settled in the wadi of the flesh. And they went forth to encounter David, and to encounter the people that were with him.
And they came close to David with the people, and he asked them of their welfare.

22 And all evil and worthless men from the men that went with David, answered and said, In that they went not with me, he will not give to them from the spoil that we have delivered.
Rather each his wife and his children, that they may lead away and go.
3e 4C 47

Another carnival

Phil Long's BS carnival is here.

There is some dispute as to the carnival numbers. The Biblical Studies library has a list here. It appears to be missing a number between April and March 2014. So my number games are correct. There were earlier numbering problems. In my first carnival the numbering was already questioned.
The number of this carnival's unknown.
83 p'rhaps, or more like 81.
If it's 81, then two months have been
missed since the 41st carny was seen.
81 seems to be the right number for that first one.

The list I have here was at one time copied from the master list and it appears the numbers are now different - probably reconciling the issue pointed out in the November 2012 carnival.

Almost as difficult as dating the year 0.

Isaiah 30

I wrote the prior post on verse 1 before I had fully read this chapter. For a long time now I have stayed away from my New Testament roots. This perplexing concatenation of words needs a lot a teasing out.

Again JB writes in their notes that the Hebrew is unintelligible. Even the prophet implies that his words are not smooth. I am prepared to believe these scholars. So be prepared for something unintelligible. But imagine the juxtaposition of music with judgment, of rest with fire. Imagine deep and broad fire, prepared in advance as a seduction on behalf of the king, for his bride, the world. Yeah folks, its metaphor. Not without cost.

Hearing and seeing are a theme in Isaiah (v 20). Verse 26, again the euphemisms for moon and sun.

The song in the night (verse 29) reflects Psalm 42, a phrase from which my book was titled to reflect the music in the text  but it could be read as a whole offering in verse 29 (כליל) rather than in the night.

Ponder the contradictions, the juxtapositions of music and fire. Let us step through the fire and govern well, and insist that our governments do not build and prepare prisons and walls, but rather provide space for the exercise of the compassion of the people. If the Christians cannot figure this out, they should stay in the fire. Let them be part of the timber that was prepared for their king.

Isaiah 30 word by word

I decided to bring forward Isaiah 30 to tomorrow morning. I also published Numbers 31 today noting a post by the Velveteen Rabbi that uses it in the current fracas over refugees.

Here is my word for word for Isaiah 30 - those of you who are real translators, please feel free to tear it apart. Or meditate on it. If you have good suggestions, I will note them in tomorrow's reading.

If we are complicit deliberately or by silence in the incarceration of legal asylum claimants, then we are adding sin on sin (verse 1). There is no escape 'in Christ' for such sin. Get into that fire as part of the timber of generations (verse 33), and stay in it until there is nothing left of your sin. No weapons allowed in the fight except music (voice, timbrel, harp and flute).

The bridegroom awaits your decision to tell your congress people the right message - you can tell right from wrong I hope. Many people prepared all those holding cells. Many are following orders that are crimes against seekers of asylum. These things were prepared when other things distracted the people. The problems result from interventions by the strong against the weak going back decades when we were alive and were also complicit.

When you celebrate your national day, take care that your devotion is not idolatrous.

While I'm at it, Jim West has posted a carnival. In it he cites this Canadian article on art and truth by Carmen Joy Imes. Good find, Jim.

Numbers 31

Why does Israel require vengeance on Midian? How do you get a host of 12000 exactly through the wilderness without a single casualty or no-show? Moses has Midian connections via marriage. Midian was an instrument of salvation in the selling of Joseph into Egypt.

This chapter is gratuitous trauma and the PTSD from such tribal warfare is with us today. The distribution of booty is equally obnoxious. Why do we have here an obviously unrealistic tale, constructed with large and small round numbers violating the character of Yahweh and of Moses inserted here in the story? Is this a recognition of the limitations inherent in the rule of law?

Interesting relationship to the current refugee crisis drawn out here. HT The Velveteen Rabbi.
At the story’s end, Balaam offered one more prophecy, this time about the ill that would eventually befall Moab for its failure to welcome our people as refugees.
