Numbers 10

One can imagine the sense of verse 32, but it is grammatically awkward and it seems an impossible promise, unless to be with the chosen is to have also been chosen. But there is no divine passive here. Moses speaks as having the power to share the good of God, without reservation. The admission that the people would not know where or how to camp is important to note. Whereas there seems ultimate confidence, there is also insecurity.

Does God/Yahweh/the gods have a hill or a mountain? It's hill everywhere, reflecting probably my initial choice for Psalm 68: The hill of God, the hill of Bashan, the hill of mountain peaks, the hill of Bashan. 

It's all relative.

Interesting for the history, detail or not, and for the variations in grammatical form. David and Josiah get the detail. Singular and plural seem odd at times. The computer translates בן as son or child. I have left it as guessed rather than trying to make a consistent rule. Good to be randomly reminded that a son was also a child. Similarly there is the usual randomness of my transliteration of names. The alternate name for Bathsheva is telling [see verse 5]. Several long verses lack an atnah. The singer can rush through them too.

Exodus 4

What are these parlor tricks that Yahweh is doing here? We read later that the rod into snake trick is duplicated by the Egyptians so we know it can't be much of a test of the divine word. Anyone 'in the world' can make a straight line crooked. And the flesh to leprosy and back again. What does this tell us about human action as commanded by Yahweh? The creation of the unclean and its cleansing, is this a human game also? We know we can destroy. Can we also create? Wait and see. There may be more power in human cooperation these days than we imagine.

verse 10: Moses is so eloquent in his denial of words. It is almost as if he is stuttering in Hebrew. He can't get the words out without the help of the guttural גם. You can hear his awkwardness in the music of verse 10. He even touches on Yahweh's initial word to him. But the hint of anger only comes as a response to verse 13. Is this a sort of teen-aged "Whatever"? Even the most gifted of children can be reluctant.

But Moses goes and in verse 21 we have the anticipation of the resolute heart that is in the ruler of Egypt to refuse to send out the people. (Discussion of send here)

The key to the analogy is that we are owned by Egypt, and Egypt is instructed to send us out of its land. We do not belong to Egypt. But Egypt will fight tooth and nail to hold us. Even when we are dismissed, expelled, and gone, Egypt will continue to come after what it has lost even to its own destruction. You can say Egypt is 'the world' as long as you remember that the analogy is relative. Egypt is also loved and legitimately. It needs release from itself also. We are Egypt and we are Pharaoh. There is no easy division of ourselves from both sides of the enigma. This comes back to the problem of inclusion / exclusion. As long as we are the arbiters of exclusion or inclusion, we will fail to see our own troubling character. But that we should escape (be expelled, sent away) and begin the process of learning who we are and the nature of the promise, that is good. Yet too, the promise is effected from the beginning. Hence the language of Passover (and Easter). This is neither fatalism nor religion, but a difficult aspect of responsibility and faithfulness. Like death, this story has its role in the bootstrap of humanity.

The combination אנכי חרג I can only find here in this verse. It is an immediate action promise expressed as an active participle.

Even Moses must die, must get out of his uncircumcised Egypt, must be in that covenant of micro-death. So Yahweh seeks to put Moses to death as the story tells us in this chapter. His wife knows this. If it were not for Zippora, there would have been no exodus, no Torah, no 10 words. No one said the rock was sharp, but one could assume so given its application.

It's story, folks, but like all good story, it is perceptive, it will undermine your assumptions, and it has staying power.

2 Chronicles 35

This sounds like a humdinger of a party, this massive Passover. The language seemed different and I almost got so stuck, I was going to start another chapter. (I do this sometimes, a verse at a time here and there, testing out how difficult the chapter will be.) It seemed to me that the use of construct was less than usual, lots of the 'of' constructions being spelled out with the preposition ל rather than being implicit.

Here we meet Asaph and Jeduthun and Heyman, all mentioned in the inscriptions of Psalms. And the emphasis is certainly on the Levites as being very busy. While the text in versions says roasted, the Hebrew very clearly has boiled in the fire. That's what's there - but without a container, of course you can read roasted. The verbs are clearly different in Exodus 12 (boil בשׁל and roast צלה) but they are not distinguished here - it is בשׁל both times in verse 13.

I had missed a verse in this chapter. So the total word count went up by 10.

Entanglement is a bit of an accident, but it is quite appropriate as a gloss, for families are indeed entangled like elementary particles and like all humanity today. It is פלג the stem for stream. (Psalm 1).

A carnival of carnivals

I am reviewing the Biblical studies carnivals for the year to see who is active and what is being written about in this field. Am I missing sources?

Carnivals were very regularly controlled this past twelve months by Phil Long. January saw the carnival for December 2016 from Jennifer Guo. This was carnival 130. But I was surprised to see in my recent list a couple of throwbacks by Michael Kok. Carnival 45 (XLV) republished from September 2009, and also #66 (LXVI) from July 2012.

Cassandra Farrin posted Carnival 131 for January.  The February carnival was at Jacob Prahlow's Pursuing Veritas. ξἐνος from Dunedin, southern New Zealand has March hare. April from Joseph Kovacs at theologians, Inc., May from Jeff Carter, June the Avignon from Jim West, and June BS from the same who hides his serious links behind a command, Read it. July from carnival master Ruben, August from Jason at Eis Doxan, September from Phil himself. October from Doug Chaplin, November from Jim West, and December from Phil again.

It is a very full year and somewhat daunting to take on the coming month of January, carnival 143.  Please send me your suggestions for links in the month of January as it progresses. Just from a quick look at these posts, I see how much I have been avoiding.

What is it that is done in Biblical Studies?  A host of subjects. I myself am only on the preliminary steps: to read the text in the language that has come to us from the Hebrew tradition, and see what it seems to be saying. The text is there in front of me and it is by no means a simple text or a simple or single message. It is a bit like Everest - one climbs it because it is there.

But there are many side trips on this journey in the text and many bloggers who are on these trips: 

• the linguistics of the source languages.
• the textual sources and variations.
• the history of commentary and reception.
• the archaeology and culture of the empires that ran to and fro through the lands of the Bible.
• specifics on each area of the text. One can easily spend a lifetime on Isaiah or Torah or Matthew or, pick a book or imagined author.
• there is much about the characters that inhabit both TNK and NT, both the human and otherwise.
• it is hard to avoid theology, but that is a different study, except to the extent that a student may count theology as a form of reception history. Yet, if Il Papa ventures into translation and language, comments might come from anywhere, even Newspapers.
• equally hard to avoid dogma, derived, but again a different study.
• similarly modern cultural issues. But one could show the history and its impact on politics, gender relations, business and employment practice.
• and liturgical practice? I found in a recent carol service that after 10 years immersion in the OT, the NT had more to offer than I expected. But could I make this scholarship? Maybe some day.
• and there is technology: apps, books, and reviews. A good review is nice, but advertising is not on.
• but one has to have tools, bias, and opinion. So the avoided subjects will creep in. 

I have probably left out much. The BS Carnival is supposed to be scholarly. I.e. the carnival master might pick articles that cite their references. But they are blogs and you know they won't cross every t.

It is good to find things that generate a conversation. As Tim Bulkeley said in November about Doug Chaplin's carnival and a post by Mark Zvi Brettler, "it is careful scholars with whom I disagree a little from whom I often learn the most!"

Bias - we need to learn to pay attention to the things we may have learned wrong. The Biblical Studies scholars I think would agree that this is a suitable frame. But in a carnival, it is background. The foreground is to be fun.
