Who has been referenced in the recent biblical studies carnivals

I put as accurate a picture of the links in the last 17 carnivals through excel having used the W3 link-checker into a database where I could do some analysis.

Who gets the most links in carnivals since March 2014. I didn't go any further back since the February carnival was a bit of a spoof, having been copied unchanged from a November summary of something else. And there is a lot of difficulty picking the real links from the site links. But excel sort eliminated most duplicate and spurious lines.

So here are the 200 most frequently referenced blogs in the carnival. Patheos is also decomposed.

Now - who are these folks? And how many of them are in the list of so called biblioblogs? And which of the current hidden list of biblioblogs was never referenced?

I did not collect ratings from any site, nor did I collect names though some are obvious and most are known in the dispersed community.

Yet there the nightingale filled all the desert with inviolable posts

There is a collection of sites in a Biblical Studies grouping known as Biblioblogs. Twitter feed @biblioblognews, duplicated (I think) at http://christianorigins.com/.

I tend to avoid sites that require a charitable donation to see the content. Generally I try to avoid ads for fat people or skinny people too. Sometimes this is impossible.

Biblical Studies as a discipline is hard to pinpoint so I should not complain of lack of focus or I will be tarred with my own brush. There is a wide variety on this invisible list of sites. Some are written by scholars or based on lectures by scholars, again a wide range from linguists to philosophers, seminarians to skeptics or both, theologians, pastors and determined students learning to unpack their determination. Some are from those who are, like me, neither scholar nor pastor. Some post often, some seldom. And the content varies: academic, personal, radical, liberal, conservative, serious, comical, even single-minded, possibly to the point of perseveration.

How many more adjectives can we put there? And dare I apply them to my own work? I get perseveration (even though my editor underlines it in red). It comes from certain forms of brain damage and must be met with love. While I know of it through catastrophe, I suspect it can also arise through great disappointment when growing out of a highly controlled childhood or other cruel trades.

In cyber regret a post was removed that began: Academia is a cruel trade. It means a life of loneliness in libraries, [or at the computer] mostly reading rubbish articles merely to make sure that you need not pay any attention to them.
April is the cruelest month.
But it is August not April, so be of good cheer. After the heat of August, comes the harvest.

Eliot did not remove his Qohelet-like poem from his work:
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water.

I am collecting posts for the Biblical Studies Carnival for this month, August 2015. Posts are not confined to this group called biblioblogs but I do troll through them (like a good troll, the kind that lives under bridges to eat passers by).

Let me know in a comment or on my twitter feed at drmacdonald if you have any posts from any blog you would like me to consider.

If you don't tell me about your favorite posts especially if I have to dig them out of the biblioblog list or my own lists then you've only yourself to blame that I missed them.

And tell me too if your favorites (for this August month) are not in that list. Who knows but that I might add your site to my lists. So don't worry about being in or out.

“What are you thinking of? What thinking? What?
“I never know what you are thinking. Think.”

The Music of the Masoretic Accents

Here's a paper I've been working on since 2013. There is still much to do in the analysis of the music and the shapes of the phrases that are chosen to illustrate the music. This paper gives a sense of the kinds of questions I have been thinking about. See also the read me file. (All my work in process is in the shared Google directory here. One drive is just an easier way to blog the pdf's).

Owen Chadwick Funeral

I don't think I saw this on any Biblioblog sites. On July 17, Owen Chadwick died. His funeral was on August 3.

You can read the address by Sir David Harrison here. The address by Robert Hardy will appear shortly there or you can read it here.

Here's some advice from him to us who read ancient texts
'St Augustine said you need to be a friend of a man before you understand him. So by analogy is our relation to men of the past, societies of the past, even documents in the archives. You may suspect, you ought to suspect them all as sure to mislead you vilely unless your critical sense is ever alert; but they do it (for the most part) by their inadvertence or partial vision. You need no white paint; you need to try to see things as they were. But you need to be inside their minds and to forget the future which they could not know, and to come towards them with the openness of mind, the readiness to listen, which a man gives to a friend'.

Searching for information

I decided to search out these carnivals and the people behind them so I can see what the former content has been. It is likely that several of these links no longer work. But why? I wonder. Have people slipped away without our knowledge? Is there a missed community as well as a few missing links?

It's theoretically possible, by program or even by brute force, to extract all the links from these posts to see who really is getting linked to through the judgment of each of the last three years' worth of carnival authors. That might be a better indication of how the community is self-defining than the 'official' lists of Biblioblogs which are quite suspect as of today.

Here is a list of all the Biblical Studies Carnivals over the last 3 years to July 2015. For earlier carnivals the list is here.

August is the hottest month (in the North)

Let me know through Twitter (drmacdonald) or in a comment on this post if you have some posts you would like to see in the August Biblical Studies Carnival.

The July carnival is here complete with an appearance of N.T. Bigfoot.
