Circular reasoning in Qohelet 6

There is some evidence that the writer is pondering in a circular manner in this chapter. Note the 8 or 9 words and phrases in reverse order of usage. I chose just these 13 words from verse 12 that illustrate the long reverse usage in that verse. It does read like a conclusion also.

The cadences of Psalm 32

Ole veyored is not as 'important' as atnah. In the books Job and Psalms, ole veyored occurs in only 379 verses. Atnah occurs in 3,352 verses. They both occur in 330 records, so only in this limited subset (less than 10%) can their relative regulatory value as accents be tested.

In all cases the Ole cadence occurs first if both cadences are present. Job 3:4 on the poster in a prior post is a good example. You can see the first cadence in the middle of the fourth line of music and the second at the caesura on the fifth line. also interesting to note is that the ole veyored often occurs in the same poem several times (e.g. 5 times in Job 30, and 55% of the verses in Psalm 32). So here is Psalm 32 with the cadences marked. The brown ones are the ole-veyored ב֫ב֥ and the red ones are the atnah א֑. The music which we sang liturgically in early 2013 (in English) is here.

Notice how long verse 5 is, yet there is only one cadence. There is no attention to be drawn to the poet by pausing in the middle of the first 27 syllables but only to the result.

If you think about the content of the poem, the semantics of repentance and the cost of forgiveness, then the cadences make sense in all cases. I cannot hear any subservience of atnah to ole veyored. If anything, the cadence that is always first is secondary to the major rest point in the verse which is always the atnah.

Psalms 31-32 are strongly related, sharing over 40% of their words. Psalm 31 has 48% of its verses with an ole-veyored, Psalm 32 has 55%. Does this indicate a preference on the part of the ancient author/redactor, or is it an accident of the editing of the Masoretes?  Perhaps it is a conceptual aspect of the poems. We don't have enough data quite yet to make a supportable conclusion.

It seems possible that there is internal evidence that might suggest the signs are as old as the text. (There is no external evidence known to me). As I have noted before, people assume that the accents just appeared with the Masoretes, that they invented them in the second half of the first millennium to indicate stress and that the signs happen to work as music too.

You've maybe seen the win in yesterday's Kentucky Derby. Now here's a slow horse but plodding along. After 7 weeks on this new project (last report here), I have made a little progress.

This is not discouraging, though I am occasionally discouraged. (Final is never really final of course.) I am up from 19.8% to 23.8%. Hey! at 4% every two months, that's only 3 years to completion. But there will be long periods when little happens, like when we are on holiday, which will be a substantial part of the last two months of this year. [Actually I am not up I am down - 19.5% is done, 23.8% is ready to do - quite a difference]

I have caught up with myself with respect to the music data - almost all up to date for all the pages in my database. Samples there are galore on Google Drive but these are from a period extending over the last year, so not all of them were produced with the same version (current 3.1).

Work days remaining 7 weeks ago was 1350. Now the estimate is 1278 work days so maybe this will start to go faster. I don't track my time but I have not worked 72 3.5-hour-days in the 42-day period. (At least I don't think so). [Your editor says slow down].

99% of my current input text is up to date with the music - only 2 chapters left in Qohelet that I will do a bit at a time. Job is now all done so I can do some stats on ole-veyored and atnah in 2 of the 3 books of truth. See next post.

Experimenting with a Poster

Critical feedback welcome.

I have been asked based on my own expression of interest and a detailed project description that I sent to them, to prepare a poster describing my project for On the Same Page: Digital Approaches to Hebrew Manuscripts at King's College London.

I have till the 15th to think about it. (HT on the conference to Jim Davila of paleojudaica.)

Here's the PDF. I originally had A1 but moved to A2 size - about 6x 8.5x11 - I think it will be big enough. 

Comments? Could you figure out what I am getting at? Same three concepts as in Seeing the Psalter, prosody (=music), recurrence (=), and parallelism (=semantics) but applied to the whole Bible.
