Here is our Christmas letter.

Jeremiah 7

Jeremiah just keeps on happening. What is this 'Temple of God'? The question arises here that perhaps the people thought they were the temple. How suitable, how modern. The name given to Shiloh is Shemi Sham, My Name is There. The name given to Jerusalem is My Name Is On It, or Is On Him (Shemi alav) if you prefer. I don't know if others have done this, but I found these names hard to read until I treated them as names. They don't make sense grammatically as part of the sentence. Verses 5 and 6 could come straight from Psalms 1 and 146. Jesus cites this passage (v 11) in the cleansing of the temple incident. Paul could have used verse 9 in Romans 2 (compare Psalm 50).

הַאֹתִ֛י הֵ֥ם מַכְעִסִ֖ים נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה הֲל֣וֹא אֹתָ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן בֹּ֥שֶׁת פְּנֵיהֶֽם	19		Me they do grieve? An oracle of Yahweh. Not themselves to the shame of their faces?	3d	4B	11 12

גָּזִּ֤י נִזְרֵךְ֙ וְֽהַשְׁלִ֔יכִי וּשְׂאִ֥י עַל־שְׁפָיִ֖ם קִינָ֑ה כִּ֚י מָאַ֣ס יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּטֹּ֖שׁ אֶת־דּ֥וֹר עֶבְרָתֽוֹ	29		Mow your consecration and fling it from you and lift up over protrusions a dirge, for Yahweh has refused and abandoned the generation of his fury.	3e	4C	16 13
כִּֽי־עָשׂ֨וּ בְנֵי־יְהוּדָ֥ה הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינַ֖י נְאֻום־יְהוָ֑ה שָׂ֣מוּ שִׁקּֽוּצֵיהֶ֗ם בַּבַּ֛יִת אֲשֶׁר־נִקְרָא־שְׁמִ֥י עָלָ֖יו לְטַמְּאֽוֹ	30		For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, an oracle of Yahweh. They have set up their detestable things in the house that is called, My Name Is On It, to defile it.	3d	4B	18 20
וּבָנ֞וּ בָּמ֣וֹת הַתֹּ֗פֶת אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּגֵ֣יא בֶן־הִנֹּ֔ם לִשְׂרֹ֛ף אֶת־בְּנֵיהֶ֥ם וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א צִוִּ֔יתִי וְלֹ֥א עָלְתָ֖ה עַל־לִבִּֽי	31		They have built the high places of Timbrel that are in the gorge of the child of Hinnom, to incinerate their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command nor did such come up in my heart.	3d	4B	29 13

וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה נִבְלַ֨ת הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ לְמַֽאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאֵ֖ין מַחֲרִֽיד	33		And the corpses of this people will be as food to the fowl of the heavens and the beasts of the earth, and there is nothing but apprehensiveness.	3e	4C	25 5
וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֣י ׀ מֵעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה וּמֵֽחֻצוֹת֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם ק֤וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֔ה ק֥וֹל חָתָ֖ן וְק֣וֹל כַּלָּ֑ה כִּ֥י לְחָרְבָּ֖ה תִּהְיֶ֥ה הָאָֽרֶץ	34		And I will eradicate from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of bridegroom and the voice of bride, for deserted will be the land.	3e	4C	32 9

Affordable Care Act

It's the 21st century and the fight is the same as it was 2500 years ago: who should care and how does the body of the political entity embrace or engulf the marginalized in society? Jeremiah 25

Now how should I spell all these various names. Nebu whatever his name is the same fellow no matter how his name is spelled. So is Isaac and Yitschaq, but they have varied spellings in the various books. And there are so many names and places, 1000s, which we know nothing of or next to nothing - well, at least they are not the famous repeated names that we recognize. I was tempted to do an automated algorithm, but my data is separated. I did not include vowels in my word table so it would take an algorithm to populate it, and I am not enamored of the idea of programming and designing it at the moment. I might change my mind, for the translating / transcribing task in these person / location lists is none too intriguing. (But the musical setting is interesting...)

This passage is so much our time. So many warnings, so much ignoring, so much clinging to power and wealth, so much hurt (רע). I think we spell that evil (רעע).

עָזַ֥ב כַּכְּפִ֖יר סֻכּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־הָיְתָ֤ה אַרְצָם֙ לְשַׁמָּ֔ה מִפְּנֵי֙ חֲר֣וֹן הַיּוֹנָ֔ה וּמִפְּנֵ֖י חֲר֥וֹן אַפּֽוֹ	38		He has forsaken like a young lion his booth, for their land is a desolation in the face of the fierce suppression, and from the face of his fierce anger.	3e	4C	6 22

Deuteronomy 9

Moses here shows considerable skill in arguing with the unseen. The rationale forgets the limitations of the ancestors, and prevents the liquidation of the present or recalled sin of the people, by means of an appeal to what the rest of the world might say if Yahweh were to fail. This strategy of picking an example of his children to influence the remaining of his children...

children, inheritance, seed ... זרע may be rendered as arm or seed. The context here in verse 29 demands the metaphorical arm, but still could be read as the inheritance of a metaphorical generative capacity.

Is the hand of Yahweh resolute or courageous? Both these glosses fit חזק, the cry that is written when a scribe completes the copying of a book of the Scripture. Courage, resolution, determination, and faithfulness to the unseen, again.

Proverbs 3

Had to get back to work after 5 days away. I am hooked on this stuff. It's addictive. It is my folly. I am planning two 3 week breaks - at Christmas and in April. But will keep my hand in a little in those periods if they go as planned.

Back to a little poetry, reminiscences of Job 28 and Psalm 95 ... Notice all the body parts in this poem. It is all very tangible. Only verse 28 is without rest. Only verse 3 is a tricolon with both rest on the supertonic and on the subdominant.
