Zechariah 6

There are a few liberties with names taken in the following. You will get it. Ruinous grace. Even my disabled son said, oxymoron.

I tear through this visionary when I should have been travelling on holiday. But that was not to be. So I pursue the translation as an escape from trouble.

Zechariah 5

One thing Zechariah teaches us is to ask questions. He may have strange and dreamlike visions, but he asks rather than assuming he knows in advance the answers. Keep on with questions. Even simple ones.

Zechariah 4 - the vision of the lamp stand and the olive trees

Zechariah is a visionary. I should add this to my book on the music as a commentary on Exodus 25, but the book is long enough. Yet surely this visionary is returning to a hope that was from the beginning.  Yet we must imagine the vision. Chose for yourself an image. The music has a clear frame.

The opening of verse 1 has a similar beginning to the opening of verse 14. It is not uncommon. It occurs 96 times, five of them in Zechariah.

[2018.01] globe, to agree with the image and word in Ecclesiastes 12, the golden globe. And with the words concerning Solomon's temple, 1 Chronicles 4 and others. I am reading the stem as גלה. It could be merged with גלל. The separation of stems can lead to confusion. My tendency now is to merge and to separate later when usage is identified by word form. (Most emphatically not by part of speech. Hebrew nouns verbs and verbs nouns even more than English.)

Zechariah 3, the incendiary and the sprout

Every verse memorized in ignorance is reframed, reinterpreted, rethought, and reworked when you read it in Hebrew. If YHWH is against the accuser then the same is against Jerusalem. You cannot have it both ways. The preposition is the same ב. So the preposition in English must also be the same even if prepositions are notorious for failing concordance. (And they must fail - such is, it seems, the nature of language in translation.)

Chapter 3 of Zechariah thus causes changes to chapters 1 and 2. (Beware the translator who posts a chapter at a time.) And try to figure out here also who is speaking to whom about what or whom.

How are you, Bob? I am heavy. Lourd. כבד. Depressed מה־תּשׁתּוחחי נפשׁי?
It is not my exile, but the exile of that other who is also me. כי אך אנחנו שׁנים אהד.
If you know me, you will know my circumstance.

Zechariah 3 is a short chapter. And the incendiary is again to be delivered from fire. But what will I do about the servant Sprout?  Really the capitalized BRANCH of KJV is a bit much. Perhaps I will discover this Messianic title later and have to revise this section. But the name won't be 'branch'. 'I think I will name him Growth' (A. A. Milne). Don't worry, if this is real, it will turn up again, for the one that is in me, though troubled and troubling, will point it out to me again.

But don't think for a minute that you have the answer already. We have scarcely begun even after three score and ten years.

Saturday

I think I tend to do links on Saturday but it's not a needed thing. Doug Chaplin's articles on the articles are always of interest to me. This one has some reasoning toward openness that I concur with:

"The particular historical life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth is the defining centre of creation, the fullest possible contact point between the eternal and the temporal, the necessary and the contingent, God and humanity."

Read the whole musing for his teasing out of this sentence.

Zechariah 2

You know, friends, if such you are, this skim-boarding is both tiring and difficult. There are so many decisions made for us who read in translation, I can see why the process might never complete. Anyone could easily spend a lifetime with any one of the myriad of questions that occur to me as I slide by the dunes on the smooth waves after they have broken. There are rocks, but I avoid them by turning the skim-board around and finding another direction. It's easy to jump on and jump off again and balance for a few seconds an inch above the sand. And if the wave is too big, I ride it in and it shrinks. It always returns to the sea smaller in any case. But I don't ride them out for fear of being caught in the undertow.

Now to Zechariah, should I interpret the ב as with? I could, but then you wouldn't have to do any reading. Who are these angelsmessengers anyway? Is the prophet suffering a schizophrenic reaction to the stress of life? What voices are within that come and go and how do we hear them? Who is the angel speaking in the prophet? This is one strange encounter for me. It sounds like possession. I ask, who is speaking, whose voice in whose body, and to whom. And the suggestions within me are legion.

ידה thanks, is derived from יד hand and a host of other possibilities - so it becomes almost possible to make a little sense of verse 4. (1:21 in English versions).

I am hushed into silence by the openness of the last verse.

Zechariah 1

What's in a gloss? Is for example ארץ land or is it earth? How can one tell? Even if it is land, is it a specific land? The frequency of the word in Zechariah (one in every 5 verses .2) is among the highest. The count is shared by Genesis and Jeremiah. Only Deuteronomy exceeds them at .21.

More accurately, the frequency for Deuteronomy is 0.205, for Genesis, 0.201, Jeremiah, 0.2, and Zechariah 0.199.

Does it matter? So far I have preferred earth over land in 315 chapters by about 2 to 1.

I think I will use land here.

What's in a three letter stem? When is it a misreading? ידה and ירה both seem to be glossed (occasionally) as throw, cast, or shoot. Reminds me of a recent book title, Eats shoots and leaves. And the importance of commas. The primary use of ירה is instruct (it is the root of Torah) and the primary use of ידה is thanks. It is easy to see how resh (ר) and dalet (ד) could be confused with each other, one wonders if the manuscript reading is just wrong. I have occasionally changed a reading, but rarely. In Zechariah 1:21 (Hebrew 2:4) I wonder what is going on with readings. And I wonder what I will do. Undoubtedly it will be an interpretive move made by my own biased preconception of what the text should say. (But what reading isn't?)

But in the meanwhile here is Zechariah 1 according to the Hebrew numbering.
