Every jot and tittle - Sisyphus strikes again

It occurs to me that I could have entitled this whole series 'every jot and title'.

Genesis 3 to 10 is the current test extension. The first pass gave 56 discrepancies between my calculation of what the unpointed text should be and what it really is. That is 56 in 2,638 words - 2% error rate. Sometimes there is a misalignment - extra words in the source or two words combined into one, but not in this case. Sometimes the verse numbers differ, but not in this section. What surprised me a little in these chapters was the count of distinct discrepancies. I often hope there will be a bunch that will be fixed with one little tweak and this time there are several bunches.

  • The first is tbh, תבה, the word for the barge that Noah built.
    • (It also may be rendered as creel, the basket used by Miriam for Moses in Exodus 2:3, 5.The same word tbh is used for each. I have let the two stand as different words, and different again from ark which I reserve for ארה arh.)
  • Back from the distraction of translation, tbh requires the rendering of the tsere. This rule will account for 26 of the discrepancies so I am back down to a 1% error rate with one slight tweak.
  • Two more stems, xlh and yrh have three instances each to be reviewed.
    • For xlh, hireq becomes i without conditions.
    • For yrh there is a rule that doubles an inner v. When v occurs with  qamats, tsere, and patah, for some stems it will be doubled in the unpointed text. In the test data so far, about 50 stems follow one of these rules.

Now it's a matter of one by one. like ahl with a final holem-h drops the h. There are a few stems where final h's get dropped. Some are holem-h and some qamats-h. (Not initial h's as if there were a cockney pronunciation, but the final ones.)

Below are the remaining discrepancies. I examined them one at a time to determine the adjustment required. I think my comments are understandable and they reveal inner workings.

It's not at all clear to me that I will find the simplest algorithm. It may well be that our brains are encoded by stem to just 'know' our language. We supply context to each stem without effort. It is a marvel, but not without its own idiosyncrasies. (Yes English has stems and gadgets too but more words since English prepositions and pronouns are separate words but this is not the general case in Hebrew.)

It might drive you round the bend for me to explain every detail, but it occurs to me in this deliberate walk through of the process that there are other possible ways of implementing the rules. And that the rule patterns as they stand will probably survive the remaining 55% of the data.

These are the types of question I entertain for every discrepancy.

  • is there an existing explicit rule?
  • is there an existing implicit or general rule that needs an exception?
  • is there a new rule?
  • am I reading the problem backwards (something I often do), i.e. is the program making the change when it should not?
  • is there a conflict or even a contradiction - two words that transform differently?
  • is this a spelling adjustment - does it agree with other instances?
Everything I have done to date is automatically retested as I put in new data. That keeps the stone moving up the hill. It only falls down again when I try and simplify the rules.

Reducing lists of exceptions (wcr)

It's always nice when things stick together better. In the programming world we call this coherence. Contrast this with incoherence, (unrelated to Charles Williams' theological co-inherence). I have just been verifying the rules about converting hireq to i and it turns out several of them were too tight.

The general rule is that a stem that contains yod allows hireq by default and a few do not. A stem that does not contain yod does not render hireq by default and a large number are exceptions. That large number of exceptions is becoming larger as I loosen some of the rules. Some rules are loosened because the stem is rarely used so its full variety is not in the text. Some are loosened because the restriction to a specific form is not required. It remains to be seen if the strategy is optimal.

The reduction in exceptions to the exceptions was dramatic. I was able to test them with a simple concatenation of rules and then weed out the ones that really needed the rule. 109 stems with exceptions based on prefix reduced to 15. Talk about being too careful in earlier stages of the project.

The number of stems that allow i and do not themselves contain a yod is now 427. Two months ago according to my last post on this subject, it appears to have been only 93. In contrast at present, the number of stems that contain a yod and yet do not render hireq is merely 7. This has remained quite stable as more test data is added.

Another example drawn out from this mix: w-c-r, another word with multiple connotations depending on the context or the whim of the translator :). Isn't it interesting that strong drink and economy are the same stem.

This one retains its exceptions to the exception and allows hireq to be rendered as i only when the word form has neither suffix or prefix, or it has a suffix, or the prefix is c, or l. It will also interpret the tsere as i for the word form with neither suffix or prefix and there is a qamats in the word. This being highly specific, I expect I could not loosen the test any further.

Unpointing the Hebrew (alm)

My code may not work by abstraction, but the idea of a stem can be drawn out (abstrahere) of the results. Here is a-l-m in the test data. Again the multiple explicit rules about allowing hireq to instantiate as yod have been reduced to just one: let it happen always for this stem. Another explicit rule is that qamats vav becomes 'iv'. This is an odd rule that happens to only 4 stems. I wonder if another rule might take over. No, it's basically a spelling correction to the WLC and occurs only once. So it is in this case a standard suffix form and is only a 'rule' for this transformation that I am doing.

This stem also allows tsere to become a yod for these word forms: v/!\iv, v/!\v, vl/!\iv, v/!\vt, l/!\vt, t/!\nh where ! stands for whatever is left of the stem in the word form. These look to me like plurals and possessives. Possibly this will provide a 'smarter' algorithm.

It's fair to say though that some possessives may never occur in the corpus, so let's see what develops.

This is another strong stem. No part of it is ever missing from a word form. It is also another multi-valent word signifying porch (my domain 'city') and a part of a phrase signifying coincidence or some suitable place as in the phrase al-mqom ploni almoni. Also the sense of dumb in the domain of quiet, the word for gut, a body part, and the word for sheaves.

Unpointing the Hebrew text (gdl)

Taking at random another stem, let's see how it behaves. I will consolidate the distinct lines in the table this time. The process may be revelatory eventually. There may be over 4000 stems, but explicit rules apply to only 762 of them out of the 3000+ so far considered.

For gdl, there are still 184 distinct rows. But that is down from over 500 individual instances. So you will need to look up the chapter and verse in a concordance (if you care to) since I have reduced the references to a count.

What are the rules for the stem g-d-l? There are both explicit rules and generic rules. The explicit ones are easy to find, the implicit may be a little trickier. I had 5 explicit rules about allowing hireq to be realized as i. Now I see that they reduce to two rules - always allow hireq to become i for this stem. But prevent the prefix 'hi'. There is one other explicit rule: allow qamats under the second letter to become 'o'.

You will note that the SimHebrew allows o, u, and v where the regular unpointed Hebrew has no distinction. These differences are shown with a background colour. I ignore differences in the placement of maqef. I have accepted the WLC for the most part. The other source, Mechon-Mamre, occasionally misses a necessary maqef (for words with no accent) and occasionally adds others.

Implicit rules are for all stems but may not be executed if the general condition does not apply. For instance,

  • in the first word in the table, the hireq for the closed syllable mg is not rendered. This is true with some exceptions, and gdl is not one of them.
  • the qubuts is realized always as /u/.
  • the holem is rendered as /o/. For some stems the holem is not rendered. Note that holem and vav with holem are identically transformed.
  • there are lots of general rules about ii and gdl uses none of them. Double i is implicitly disallowed. It may be explicitly allowed for a few stems (only 9 - and these may disappear with more data if I find a better way to get to the double i).
  • Double i is often required for the preterite but it does not appear here. (See the last two entries in the table below.)
  • there are lots of general rules around plural forms and common middle of word forms. None of these appears to be needed for gdl
  • tsere and segol are ignored for gdl.
It may be that such a 'strong' verb where each consonant is explicitly in every word form does not require all the subtleties of the vowel system.

Instances of stem gdl in the test data (approx 140k words) sorted by Hebrew word.

The September Carnival

Brent Niedergall has posted Biblical Studies Carnival 175. This will give your spirit a lift.

I am listening to a little pastoral Bach as I scan it - and it really scans.

My mind is full of pith this morning. I am a bit like an old orange.
The first thing I note is that God is our bootstrap.
God is not an arbitrary invention but a necessary one.
We are under the power of oligarchs because we worship money.
I have had brushes with nihilism. It is unreal.
We are attacked in our discernment of truth but faithfulness prevails.
Violence is a degradation of the thrust of care in evolution.

Dr. Fauci: "I don't know how to teach you that we must care for each other."

Are there any seeds among the pith?

That's the key - who teaches kindness?
