Ezekiel 29

If I don't get on with some of these books, I will never read them. The 'Old Testament' is so big, it takes a lifetime to get through it. Anyone who says to you, I will read it in a year, is kidding themselves. That would be three chapters a day without a break, and without looking up the words they don't understand!

Ezekiel, prophet in the exile, is peripheral to me. I have not read him seriously yet. Here he deals with the scaly dragon, Egypt. Egypt was not reliable as a staff or ally of Israel. So Egypt is treated as we have seen treatment of Israel: dispersal, a time of captivity, and regathering. It is a curious image if one considers the symbol Egypt as 'the world'. What is not Israel gets the same corrective but also compassionate treatment as Israel. Not so great though during the looting and spoil of the Babylonian force under its king (whatever his name is).

I have let Ezekiel be tongue-tied just once here.

Isaiah 37

True to form, Isaiah 37 is ready quickly, but what it invites is a comparison of the music with 2 Kings 19. On a superficial level, apart from the extra verse division (verse 15), it looks identical. There are however several differences in ornamentation as shown here in a textual form
I have all the music in several forms to allow quick reading and comparison. These are clearly close.
If you know accentuation, you can probably figure out the names I have used. The actual music is in the usual places.

2 Kings 19

I was skating about on the surface of several chapters and all seemed very unfamiliar to me till I noted that 2 Kings 19 was sitting there empty in the middle of a series of chapters from 13 to 25. Again this is from the 4 parallel chapters in Isaiah 36-39, so true to form, Isaiah 37 is now 93% complete by automation. All that remains for me is to form the sentences there, most of which will be based on or identical to the ones below depending on the minor changes in the Hebrew.

Quite apart from the technical difficulty I had for 3 days restarting the database, I now feel that I am back on the horse. I don't know if there is a saddle or not. It depends on whether the horse remains predictable, and language and history and culture being what they are, I am sure there are surprises left. Many of the words in this passage were only single guesses. The text of the prayers and prophecies here is unique in its phrasing. While reading this chapters I also tweaked 19 other chapters. And I discovered that my data recovery process loses the audit dates. I have since backed up these so some history of changes is gone - not very important except to an archivist.

This is a cool story - apart from the questions my translation raises about language, which are legion, the statement of faith from Hezekiah in verse 15 reflects the faith of the Psalms through the phrase ... the heavens and the earth.

I have not fully recovered changes I made in April in my forms and programs, but I am always changing them anyway. And I really need to redevelop them in some places. One that I have made selects verses by word sequences. so that I can check my decisions concerning the concordance of sentence construction. I was surprised that את הארץ was not found where I expected, but in the psalms, they being poetry, the phrase does not include the object marker: עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ

I have rarely used the phrase the living God to date. Suddenly I find myself filled with questions about the formation and intent of this phrase. How should I distinguish אֱלֹהִ֥ים חָֽי (here) from 1 Samuel 17 and Deuteronomy 5, אֱלֹהִ֥ים חָֽיים?  Is it a variation in the cultural usage of the Hebrew language? I decided on a construct in this case. And where אל is used rather than the long plural of God, I have used the living One. (Psalms 42 and Hosea 2).

and to this city he will not come. An oracle of Yahweh.

Reproof

Reproof for חסד is gone. I had used it in Psalm 23 and 52. My first decisions after a month off are beginning to happen again. The decision to use reproof a few times instead of the more familiar loving-kindness or mercy was made up to 7 years ago, perhaps more. It is not without some justification, but as a gloss, it leads away from sentiment only to the extent that we are aware it is an exception to the norm. Besides, reproof is an important concept particularly in Job.

חסד covenant mercy(1), covenant-merciful-kindness(1), kindly(3), kindness(22), kindnesses(2), loving-kindness(128), loving-kindnesses(2), mercies(2), mercy(45), show yourself kind(2), there ... loving-kindness(1), xesed(1)

My holiday finished with a touch of reproof! I found myself locked out of my local database. Some idiosyncrasy of Oracle XE stopped it from allowing a connection. How it fixed itself and how it changed while I was away remain a mystery to me. I did feel that the Invisible was saying: You need to slow down and learn more before continuing. So I read a scholarly article on Proverbs 1:1-7 and I recognized why I don't want to go to such depth. Too many words, too many syllables. But at some point, I should be able to interpret and not just read...

I have other compromises that I am not completely happy with. I used height and heights for two different roots (רום and קום). But height is prosaic and heights poetic so I have left the conflict. And they differ by only one letter in Hebrew. The first is basically arise and place plus a few miscellaneous homonyms, the second exalt and lift high with a homonym contribute. You can see how easily one part of this group could morph into another.

קום arise(123), arisen(9), arises(12), arising(21), arose(73), assignation(2), blurred(1), blurring(1), height(17), hold high(1), make arise(2), one arising(1), own place(5), place where(1), place(289), placed(23), places(14), placing(1), quicken(1), quickly arise(1), quite arisen(1), raise(32), raised(15), raises(2), raising(7), risen corn(3), sneering(1), there arise(1), upheld(5), uphold(12), upholds(1), waking arising(1)
רום ... exalted(1), contribute(5), contribution(35), contributions(2), contributors(1), exalt themselves(1), exalt(19), exaltation(8), exalted(39), exalting(4), exalts(3), heights(11), high(27), higher(1), lift high(5), lifted high(6), lifting high(1), lifts high(1), looked after(1), mightily high(1), one contributes(1), quite full exalted(1), ram(4), ready(1), recover(2), rumah(2), stamp(1), tall(1), taller(1)

I will fight with glosses the whole way and lose. The longer I wait to change something that bothers me, the harder it gets. I know the compromises for the most part and I fix them sometimes immediately when I can. But language is more than glosses and more than words.

Joel Hoffman has a delightfully entitled blog: God Didn't Say That. I appreciated a recent question on translation here. Does language really supply assumed values that you might hate? Clearly it does and we often aren't aware of them.

Panama - selections from the Carribean

Day 2 - at sea - and a formal dinner. 23°16.7'N 084°43.0'W, Moderate breeze / Sunny skies, 24°C

The post office at Hell, Cayman Islands
Day 3 - Grand Cayman. Sounds grand, doesn't it. Here we thrifty tourists decided to get a 'bus' - somewhat like the little buses in Turkey - to see the sights. At $15 each, we got a two-hour tour along the road that runs by 7 mile beach. It was a fine tour with stops for sampling the rum and rum cake along the way. As I reported earlier, Hell is a scheduled stop on this ride. From here we guessed at Grand Cayman postage and hoped the Easter card would be delivered even from Hell.

A hot day deserves a stop at the beach, but we were the only two to get off the bus there. We figured we could get a return taxi/bus for a few dollars. The water was excellent. Getting in was easy, one just slid down a sandy slope where the waves were breaking. Getting back onto the beach was another story. Fortunately two strong men visiting locally for snorkeling helped Diana get back onto terra firma.

7 mile beach
They also went to the parking lot and found that a bus had returned for a number of other swimmers who had also been on a tour and had been dropped off at the beach. The cost for getting back was five dollars each. Altogether a reasonable day. (Even cheaper if Diana had remembered to bring her Hat. But still the hat we bought is quite delightful and will be useful. Maybe we will give it away to someone who likes yellow ribbon.)

The only thing we didn't do was use the free shower on the beach. The sand was composed of coarse and somewhat sharp white granules which back in our stateroom caused a little consternation, but not much.

St Peter's Falmouth
Returning to the ship was a long process because of the tender, about half an hour. We unpacked the backpack and got the sand out of us then went upstairs to get ice cream, vanilla and coffee.

Day 4 - Jamaica, Falmouth. Here we likewise did our own thing. In this case a walk through town. We were accosted by one man who was determined to be our protector, but we said no thanks and he eventually left. He said we needed protection, but we didn't. We walked to St Peter's and back, about a mile and a half.

Day 5 - at sea 2017.04.11 15°49.1'N 073°44.8'W Fresh breeze / Cloudy skies, 28°C

Day 6 - Aruba - the sponsor of BBC News etc. Finally we get to see what it's all about. There are many resorts, some very grand, even pompous.

We were going to bring snorkel equipment, but it is too cumbersome to pack for such a journey.

Again we visited on our own, this time by public transit, a double fare pass for each of us. Renting an umbrella and chair on the beach for an hour or so. The Bugaloe beach hut did not have wifi as promised and the facilities cost a dollar. Not perfect but doable. (We found a good change room at the Hilton Aruba just a 100 or so meters from the beach.) More pictures here.

Panama - day 1

Park in Downtown Tampa
We are back from our repositioning cruise through the Panama canal from Tampa to Victoria. I cannot open my database at the moment. Something changed in the Oracle XE configuration. Being deprived of my work for a few more days highlights the things that give my life meaning apart from isolating myself in ancient texts. Things like running the house, planting in the garden, saying hello to people, going to GVYO rehearsals and to the Opera and so on. I am going to document the cruise to figure out how such an experience fits in for us.

Day 1. We had arrived via Air Canada (Victoria-Toronto-Tampa) the prior night. In the morning we took a short walk through the downtown area of Tampa from our hotel, the Meridien, located in the beautiful old courthouse building. We were looking for a card, a post office, and some tonic water to go with the gin we had purchased for the next three weeks on board the cruise: Tampa to Victoria via three ports in the Caribbean through the Panama canal and then up the coast of Central America to San Diego.

Diana waited in this park while I searched for the post office. I duly weighed the card, attached the postage, and returned for her to write the card, an Easter card, but then we both forgot to mail it!

We walked back to the hotel, intrigued by the architecture. We had an hour to spare before the shuttle to the dock, so we settled into the coffee shop in the hotel.

As we entered the cruise terminal, I noted the card in my pocket. O dear. Ensured that we could mail the card from the ship, we boarded, but they didn't tell us they wouldn't be able to mail the card till San Diego, a week after Easter! Eventually we mailed it from our first stop, Hell, in the Cayman Islands, on the 7 mile beach where we had a lovely swim. I understand it arrived a few days ago. It was a long and tortuous journey from the post office in Hell to Regina, I expect.

The coffee shop in the old court house, now the Meridien hotel
Our trip from Victoria was very smooth and at every checkpoint we were given swift priority either for the handicapped or from our business class seat sale that we had purchased in January. The Rouge flight from Toronto was particularly enjoyable for the Ipad they loaned me with which I watched Arrival, a film we later saw on the ship and watched twice in our suite. I find the film a credible exploration of the problem of language perception and translation. I am still pondering it.

Google photos is a step backward from Picasa albums. The rest of the album is here. I have also tried it on Onedrive but it appears you have to sign in to view. Google vs Microsoft competition is not working for us at the moment.
