Hosea 12

The verse numbers differ by one with English editions. This chapter is somewhat incoherent to me, with unfinished sentences and difficult pronoun switches. What is the significance of the reminder of the Jacob-messenger wrestling in Genesis? Note the difficulty of translating the root און, mischief or virility or vigour? And the similar sounding עון, iniquity. In verse 15 Ephraim grieves requires an object on which the vexation is imposed, i.e. God, but there is no object in the text. The object (his lord, his master) is clear from the final word of the second half of the verse (which also resolves the ambiguous pronoun after the atnach).

You make whatever sense of the passage as you think is good. Here's that last verse in music. You can always sing this with expression that could not be easily rendered in words.
[Ephraim provokes to bitter grief, // so he abandoned his blood upon him, and his reproach his master will return to him.] I found a way to get the verse to read without the object of grief expressed.

Who are the players? What do the words, Judah, Jacob, Israel, Ephraim signify? (Note the switch from he to us in verse 5. Who is the you of verse 7?)

There are several roots that recur more than twice and another 14 that recur exactly twice. Too many for comfortable viewing. These that follow show a little of the continuing tone of the passage with initial focus on Ephraim and final focus on the prophets - and some wordplay on watch and as noted, on virility or vigour or mischief.

Ezekiel 48

For something completely different. Ezekiel is a great mystery to me, so why not do the last chapter?

So far incomprehensible. A set of cryptically worded measurements, a title 'principal' belonging to someone, I suppose, and a holding, or holdings, of a contribution, or of an oblation (not in my dictionary for this root).

What is going on? I just want you to know that I don't know yet. Perhaps this will be made clearer over the next 3 years.

We are told the Bible is perspicuous - that is you can understand it. Really? See right through it, eh? Those who say that have obviously said it in hope, if not in error, or deliberate deception, because it is anything but easy to understand on one or many readings. It is thoroughly weird sometimes.

I consider this chapter pro-tem till I get up to the University and do some research. There is always of course the internet and this map is probably safe.

Hosea 11

The pronouns show that Hebrew is not always like English in making things agree in number in a sentence. Israel, Ephraim, are both one and many. One collective, many individuals. One people, many persons. One body, many members, just like the images used in the New Testament. If the head is good, the people will have a model to follow. If the head is diseased, ... Figure it out.

Will God have mercy? What do you think? When lies are spouted from every fountain of misinformation, when judgment is as twisted as a corkscrew, when the people have no discernment of character, when the pretend prophets fawn upon the royal candidate, and he (yes, he) thinks in his heart, These fools will get me elected. The name of Christ is profaned among us and we don't know the Old Testament prophets well enough to get it. We think we are right with our might, and our guns, and our violence, and our prejudice against anyone who is not like us.

When judgment flourishes as venom, then judgment, not mercy, from the one who is Above, is called for. The pretenders will bear their guilt. Let us hope that the shame will be redemptive and that we will turn away from the militarized violence that is in our hands. We are no different from those we despise. How else could we see into their hearts?

Reread Hosea 10. And then read 11.

Well, I hope so. I assure you that we are apprehensive from sea to sea

כִּ֛י נַ֥עַר יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וָאֹהֲבֵ֑הוּ
וּמִמִּצְרַ֖יִם קָרָ֥אתִי לִבְנִֽי
1 d When Israel was a youth I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my child.

2 They called to them? So they went away from their presence.
To the Baalim they sacrifice. To the graven images they burn incense.

וְאָנֹכִ֤י תִרְגַּ֙לְתִּי֙ לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם קָחָ֖ם עַל־זְרֽוֹעֹתָ֑יו

3 And I myself made Ephraim stride, taking them on his arm,
but they did not know that I healed them.

4 With human ropes I drew them out, with cords of love. And I became to them as one who contributes a shackle on their cheeks,
though I stretched out to him to provide food.

For he himself roars, and children from the sea are apprehensive.
