Song 4

You will notice a change: for hedged in verse 12 I have substituted two other common uses of this stem, somewhat more striking. As if one says, what does one do to a garden or a billow, and the answer is not necessarily 'hedge'.
Song 4 Fn Min Max Syll
1 Just look at you, beautiful, my friend. Just look at you, beautiful, your eyes doves from within your headscarf,
your hair like a troop of she-goats curled up on the hillside of Gilead.
3e 4C 23
15
2 Your teeth are like a troop of shorn sheep that have ascended from the wash,
such that all of them are bearing twins, and there is not one among them bereaved.
3e 4B 16
13
3 C Like the thread of scarlet are your lips and your words lovely,
like a slice of the pomegranate your temple from within your headscarf.
3e 4C 15
16
4 Like the tower of David your neck, built for an arsenal,
the thousand shields hang on it, all the escutcheons of the valiant.
3e 4C 14
16
5 Your two breasts and like two twin faun of the gazelle host,
that pasture among the lilies.
3d 4B 16
7
6 C Till the day respires and the shadows withdraw,
I will myself come to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hillock of frankincense.
3e 4C 13
14
7 You are all beautiful, my friend, and there is no spot in you. 3e 4C 11

8 With me from Lebanon, perfection, with me from Lebanon you will come.
You will scrutinize from the head of Amana, from the head of Senir and Hermon, from lions' dens, from the mountains of leopards.
3e 4C 15
27
9 You have ravished my heart, my sister, perfection.
You have ravished my heart with one glance from your eyes, with one pendant from your neck.
3e 4B 9
21
10 How beautiful is your caress, my sister, perfection.
How much better is your caress than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than all spices.
3e 4C 11
20
11 d Your lips drop honeycomb, perfection.
Honey and milk are under your tongue, and the fragrance of your apparel, like the fragrance of Lebanon.
3d 4C 11
23
12 f A garden bolted, my sister, perfection,
a billow shod, a spring sealed.
3e 4B 8
7

13 Your shoots are a paradise of pomegranates, with quality fruits,
henna with spikenard.
3e 4B 15
7

14 B Spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense,
myrrh and aloes, with all preeminent spices.
3e 4C 18
12

15 A spring of gardens, a well of waters living,
and flowing from Lebanon.
3e 4B 9

16 C Be roused, north wind, and come, south wind. Blow upon my garden. Let its spices flow.
Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its quality fruits.

Ruth 1

Ruth 1FnMinMaxSyll
1It was in the days of the judgment of the judges, and there was a famine in the land.
And a man went from the house (Beth) of bread (-lehem) of Judah to reside in the fields of Moab, he, his wife, and his two sons.
3c4B16
25
2And the name of the man was Elimelek, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, Ephratites from Bethlehem of Judah.
And they came to the fields of Moab,
and there they were.
3e4C34
10
3And Elimelek died, Naomi's man.
And she was bereft, and her two sons.
3e4B11
10
4And they took for themselves Moabite wives, the name of the one Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth.
And they settled there for ten years.
3e4C22
9
5And they died, even the two of them, Mahlon and Chilion.
And she was bereft, the woman, of her two boys and of her man.
3e4B13
17
6And she arose, she and her daughters in law to return from the fields of Moab.
For she had heard in the fields of Moab that Yahweh had visited his people to give to them bread.
3e4C16
20
7And she came out from the place where she was and her two daughters-in-law with her,
and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
3e4B21
15
8And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go. Return, each to the house of her mother.
May Yahweh deal with you kindly as you have dealt with those who died, and with me.
3c4C22
23
9May Yahweh give to you, and may you find rest, each in the house of her man.
And she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.
3e4C17
15
10And they said to her,
For with you, we will return to your people.
3e4A5
7
11And Naomi said, Turn back my daughters.
Why would you go with me?
Are there yet to me sons in my inner parts that they might become adults for you?
3e4C18
17
12CTurn back my daughters. Go, for I am too old to have a man.
For had I said, I am expecting, even if there was tonight a man, and even if I gave birth to sons,
3e4C15
24
13as if you could wait until they had grown up, as if you would remain shut up without there being a man.
No my daughters, for my bitterness is greater than yours. For the hand of Yahweh has come out in me.
3e4C16
11
18
14And they lifted up their voice and wept further.
And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed close to her.
3e4C11
14
15And she said, Behold your sister-in-law returns to her people and to her God.
You return following your sister-in-law.
3e4B19
8
16And Ruth said, Do not compel me to forsake you, to turn back from following you.
For where you go, I go, and wherever you stop over, I stop over, your people, my people, your God, my God.
3e4C19
28
17Where you die, I die, and there I will be entombed.
Thus Yahweh do to me and add more, for only death will separate me and you.
3e4C13
22
18And she saw that she was sure to go with her,
and she left off speaking with her.
3e4B14
9
19And the two of them went till they came to Bethlehem.
And it was as they came to Bethlehem that all the city was excited concerning them, and the women said, Is this Naomi?
3e4C13
26
20And she said to them, Do not call me Naomi.
Call me Mara, for bitter is the Sufficient to me, excessively.
3d4C14
13
21I myself full went away, and empty Yahweh has returned me.
Why call me Naomi, for Yahweh has answered me, and the Sufficient brought trouble to me.
3e4C17
20
22So Naomi returned, and Ruth, the Moabite, her daughter-in-law with her. She returned from the fields of Moab.
And they came to Bethlehem at the commencement of the harvest of barley.

There were all sorts of minor punctuation errors in the earlier posts on this book. The remaining chapters will appear over the next 3 weeks without commentary.

Deuteronomy 3

Giants ahead. There are a number of uses (25?) of the word Rephaim in the Scriptures. On the one hand it could be from healing (as in Job 13:4, 26:5), or it could be like the shades of Psalm 88, but it is a different word from the giants (Nephilim) of Genesis 6:4, where I used fallen rather than giants. For the Rephaim, I could use giant, since I have not yet used this gloss, but for now I have picked titan. The change from tradition could get us thinking a bit more about these things. There are quite a few references to these, whatever they are, still to come.

Deuteronomy 3 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And we faced about and ascended by way of Bashan,
and Og, king of Bashan, came forth and encountered us, he and all with him, to battle at Edrei.
3c 4B 11
25

2 And Yahweh said to me, Do not fear him, for into your hand I have given him, and all with him, and his land,
and you will do to him as you have done to Sihon, king of the Amorites, that inhabited in Heshbon.
3c 4C 30

Proverbs 7

As usual, read 'it' as a personal pronoun of non-specific gender in a compromised situation. I have not always been consistent with this technique, but it is used frequently in my readings as I explore both the positive and negative aspects of gender usage in the Hebrew.

Hebrew like English has no third person singular personal pronoun that includes both genders. Hebrew like French and unlike English has gendered nouns and adjectives, but these may or may not be anything more than grammatical gender. This must be a potentially long-winded thought, so enough is enough. Distractions are manifold. And that is what this passage is about. Think of the antecedent of it as being youth.

Notice the absence of a rest point in verse 7. The implied continuations signaled by the first note of several verses indicate subtlety (f), continuity (g) and alarm (C). Music is full is here.

Remember in Proverbs, there are two female characters, wisdom, and the sifting woman. Here too there is the youth (it) and an unnamed householder (he) whose house is borrowed for the saturated infatuations.

Joshua 3

Passing through or crossing over? I have choices for עבר across, pass, pass through, bypass, cross, go, transfer, traverse. For the 9 occurrences here, I chose pass through.

Joshua 3 Fn Min Max
1 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and they pulled out from Shittim, and they came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel,
and they lodged there before they passed through.

2 And it happened at the culmination of three days,
that the overseers passed through within the camp.

3 And they commanded the people, saying, When you see the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it,
then you, you pull out from your place, and you go after it.
3e 4C

And they lifted up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

8 And you, you will command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying,
As you come to the extremity of the waters of the Jordan, in the Jordan you will stand.
3e 4B
9 And Joshua said to the children of Israel,
Come close. Behold, and you will hear the words of Yahweh your God.
3e 4B
10 And Joshua said, In this you will know that the living One is among you,
and he will dispossess from your presence the Canaanite and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite.
3d 4B
11 Behold, the ark of the covenant, the Lord of all the earth,
passes through before you in the Jordan.
3e 4B
12 And now take for yourselves twelve persons from the bands of Israel,
one person, one person per band.
3e 4C
13 And it will happen that as the soles of the feet of the priests who were bearing the ark of Yahweh the Lord of all the earth rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off from the waters that come down from the ascent,
and they will stand in one heap.
3e 4C
14 And it happened when the people pulled out from their tents to pass through the Jordan,
and the priests, who were bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,
3d 4C
15 And as those bearing the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bear the ark dipped into the outskirts of the waters,
(and the Jordan fills over all its levees all the days of harvest),
3e 4C
16 That the waters that come down from the ascent stood, arising into one heap very far from Adam, the city that is at the side of Tsartan, and those coming down over the sea toward the steppe, the salt sea, were completely cut off,
and the people passed through in front of Jericho.
3c 4C
17 And the priests stood, who bear the ark the covenant of Yahweh, in the desert in the midst of the Jordan, established.
And all Israel passed through, in the desert, until they completed, all the nation, to pass through the Jordan.
