Genesis 31

This is long but straightforward for the most part from a mechanical translation's point of view. Verse 34 has an interesting play on words. בכר הגמל was mechanically given as first born weaned, assuming stems בכר and גמל. For גמל camel and wean are homonyms. The first stem is not בכר but כר with the preposition ב. Still the sound could be punned.

Verse 39, חטא is used to compensate for the loss of something torn. A unique use of a common word, normally sin sin-offering etc.

Verse 42 has a memorable unique view of the פחד Dread of Isaac. I have treated it as a name of God.

Verse 46, JB has cairn - nice neutral word for a pile of rubble. The word is often used for a figurine, perhaps a concession to the cultural practice of Laban, having just lost his household gods. Gilead is figurine or cairn of witness. Laban's name for the cairn in verse 47 is Aramaic, but in verse 48 he speaks in Hebrew and the name and its interpretation are very clear

verse 50 - a remarkable recognition of both parties to the underlying mystery of separation and covenant in what cannot be seen. If only such a covenant could arise between the warring religions, sects, parties, clans, gangs, etc of the same geographic area today, not to mention everywhere else in the world.

1 And he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, Jacob has taken all that was our father's,
and from what was our father's, he has dealt himself all this glory.

2 And Jacob saw the face of Laban,
and behold he was not Laban as in days gone by.

5

5 And he said to them, I see the face of your father, for it is not to me as it was the day before yesterday,
and the God of my father has been with me.

8 If he says thus, Speckled will be your wage, then all the flock give birth to speckled.
But if he says thus, Streaked will be your wage, then all the flock give birth to streaked.

17 And Jacob arose,
and lifted up his children and his women on the camels.
3d 4A 6

18 And he drove all his livestock, and all belonging to them that he had obtained, the livestock of his acquisitions that he had obtained in Padan Aram,
to go to Yitschaq his father toward the land of Canaan.
3d 4B 32
12

19 And Laban went to shear his sheep.
And Rachel had stolen the household gods that were her father's.
3e 4B 10
15

He had told him nothing, for he was running away.
3e 4B 14
11

10

and he followed, closing in on him on mount Gilead.
3e 4C 20
10

24 But God came to Laban the Aramaean in a dream by night,
and said to him, Keep watch for yourself lest you speak with Jacob from good to evil.
3c 4B 19
21

25 And Laban overtook Jacob.
And Jacob had stuck his tent on the hill. And Laban stuck, with his brothers, on mount Gilead.

3d 4C 13
22

3c 4B 12
30

30 So now, you have gone for your aching for the house of your father,
but why have you stolen my gods?
3e 4B 19
9
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban,
For I feared, for I said, Lest you would rob your daughters from me.
3e 4B 12

32 ~ With whom you find your gods, let him not live. In front of our kin, recognize what is yours with me, then take for yourself.
(And Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.)
3c 4B 29
13
33 And Laban came into the tent of Jacob, and into the tent of Leah, and into the tent of the two maidservants, and he found nothing,
so he went forth from the tent of Leah, and came into the tent of Rachel.
3d 4B 29
16
34 But Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the furniture of the camel, and she sat on them.
And Laban groped all the tent and found nothing.
3d 4B 23
14

35 And she said to her father, Do not be fierce, in the eyes of my lord, that not I can arise in your presence, for the way of women is on me.
And he investigated, but he did not find the household gods.
3e 4C 31
11

36 And Jacob burned with anger, and was excessive with Laban.
And Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my transgression? What my sin, that you have hotly pursued after me?
