Here is a bit of where I was October 26, 2015...

Where are you again?

Based on the automated look-ahead that I wrote in the last three weeks, I still have 75,699 unknown words, 139,330 that the computer can guess based on a single word, 22,835 that it has guessed based on two consecutive words, 2,669 based on three consecutive words, 66 based on 4 and 30 based on 5. I have 64,093 words with a selected gloss that is not computer driven.

Published on this blog or in my book on the Psalms, there are 221 of 929 chapters or 23.8%. On a verse by verse basis, all 929 chapters have been touched, 17,154 of 23,143 verses have been touched, but when you look at the empty verses as collected, there remain 18,131 to do or 78.3%.

Where am I now?

Based on the automated look-ahead I wrote and rewrote and rewrote, (but it is still just a series of comparisons, not a reworking of the grammar routines I wrote earlier), I still have 24,200 unknown words - I am down by 2/3. I have halved the number of single guesses to 64,160. 39,564 are in two-word guesses, 11,660 in three-word guesses, a five-fold increase, 3,686 in four-word guesses a 50-fold increase,  2,119 based on a five-word guess, a 70-fold increase, and 1,890 based on comparing 6 Hebrew words.  158,097 words have been 'translated'. That is the progress over 23 months. Roughly 16 chapters per month, 405 verses per month. We may finish. It's awkward but it's learning, and the software shows that there is a significant density of repetition of phrases in the fabric of the puzzle. 

We are now up to 570 chapters done 61.4%, of which an astonishing 501 have had some (minor) tweak in the last 2 months! 10,252 verses remain to be done. 

The real aspect of new time is that my household is growing from 2 persons to 6 for a while including a 2 and a 4 year old. Time will be of the essence.

Numbers 1

Numbers 1 has a large component of near but not exact repetition of phrases. Also I note a new phrase the dwelling-place of the testimony. I have used dwelling-place for משׁכנ from שׁכן and to date we have seen it frequently but usually not as construct. It is in construct here as the dwelling-place of the testimony, (מִשְׁכַּ֥ן הָעֵדֽוּת with or without the vav) and in Exodus (4 times + 1 in 1 Chronicles) as the dwelling-place of the tent of engagement. And once in the Psalms as the dwelling-place of your name. The tent of engagement  (אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד) is very frequent (111 times in the data). I recall having been confused by these terms in the now distant past. I hope it emerges more clearly for me. There appears to be just one such dwelling/tent, aka tabernacle.

Exodus 23

Here in this chapter there are a few new things. It has been rare if at all to see נפשׁ used as a verb. Here it is in verse 12. And a word everyone knows, forsake עזב appears also to have a homonym assist. This is quite a reversal. How does forsaking morph into assistance? Is it an indication of word usage changing over time? The problem is not without discussion - see here.

פגע likewise took on a gloss that was unlike what I had used so far. And I saw that I had misread the word in previously posted chapters (updated) and I was able to remove an exception from my table of exceptions.

In verse 14 the body part, feet, has become pilgrimages. It is curious that the repetition in verse 17 has the expected word times. You can hear the cognate of חג with the Islamic pilgrimage of the Hajj.

Verse 15 repeats the words of Exodus 34:20 with its unexpected change in person.

After reading and writing this chapter, I see that the remaining chapters in the group known as The Book of the Covenant have been raised up in the percentages guessed. The other Exodus chapters have unchanged percentages (measured to 1 decimal place). So this is an objective indication that these 4 chapters are a unit.

A thought on Exodus and language

There is lots more to learn in the 40% of the chapters I have not yet read. What do you think of this data? These are the number of verses per chapter left in Exodus. The third column is the % that is automatically guessed. Are those near the bottom of the list indicative of a change in language? I just acquired a copy of Bill Morrow's new book, An Introduction to Biblical Law. It looks like a very clear textbook. One of his example sections is Exodus 21-24 traditionally called the Book of the Covenant. Chapter 24 is here. Perhaps its language pushed chapter 23 to 54% guessed (in Hebrew word pairs or more). But 22 and 21 are far down the list.

To be fair to the somewhat random order in which I have seeded this reading, at the moment 80 of the remain chapters are 50% or more guessed in Hebrew word pairs or more, 141 are between 40 and 49.9%, 72 are between 30 and 39.9% and that leaves 62 below 30%.

Perhaps chapter 23 will be next - let's see what effect it has on chapters 22 and 21.

Numbers 3

Another long chapter in which we meet again the parts of the sanctuary and the organization of those whose job was to care for it. Notice the frame of stranger within. And the outer frame of the use of firstborn. Verses 1-13 and 38-51 stranger within and firstborn form a frame for verses 14-37 the conscription and ordering of the priesthood for the service of the dwelling-place. In verses 1 to 13 firstborn, brought near, strange, and keep frame in a chiasm the first occurrence of פקד.

Whenever I do the exercise of telling you about my glosses, I discover those I don't need and don't want.

Sometimes, (often in fact) I must not read recurring stems with the same gloss. One good example is verse 7. I have still maintained the clarity of not using the same gloss for two different Hebrew stems in this case, but the stem שׁמר gets a whole raft of variations: adamant(2 - excessively guarded), disregard(1 - with the negative particle), dregs(2 - perhaps what one watches for / guards against when drinking something), guard(13), guarded(5), guardian(1), guards(6), keep watch(19), keep(163), keeper(6), keepers(11), keeping watch(2), keeping(24), keeps watch(1), keeps(13), kept(41), more watching(1), night watches(2), shelter(6), sheltered(1), sheltering(2), shelters(4), Shemer(2), Shomer(1), spike(3 - perhaps a form of natural guard), untranslated(1), watch(40), watched(3), watches(8), watching(7)

Similarly I have varied נתן as noted many times earlier. It's usage grew over its usage in the Psalms. The role of recurrence in prose varies from its more crucial role of recurring sounds revealing micro and macro structural aspects of poetry as I have described in Seeing the Psalter.

קרב is also a rich varied word. Seeing it as a preposition rather than a verb in verse 10 recognizes the complex and complete use of language in the period. The failure of the priesthood under Eli (1 Samuel) is an example of what happens when the stranger within takes over. The ancients are clearly able to use language symbolically and with full recognition of its literary power. The death symbolized by the sacrificial cult is revealed as more sophisticated than primitive. Similarly if a Christian fails to put to death the stranger within its own being (as opposed to demonstrating and killing other members of the body), he or she or they deny the reality of what is portrayed in the New Testament. This use is reflected in inner person and inscrutable heart of Psalms 64:7.

I render פקד  here as conscript rather than number. The concordance rules are beginning to show their power. Conscript includes numbering but has more to it than that. It is the recognition of the people as whole. The stem is the same as one of the 8 keywords of Psalm 119. The care I am taking with my concordance rules is a way of looking at sounds-like relationships and may help determine usage and intent within the language. [Ha ha - notice it is not translated as punish! I tell you translators make it up as they go along. Imagine rather than punishing iniquity or even visiting it, that God could conscript it for usage outside its intent. There is, I repeat, no punishment whatsoever in Bob's Bible. We should feel a great sigh of relief, shouldn't we?]
