Numbers 5

The use of curse in this passage has nothing to do with the English nickname for monthly periods in a woman. It is ארר, the only word I use for curse. It is the language of treaty and covenant. See Deuteronomy 27-28 for examples. The KJV uses curse for several Hebrew stems. It is particularly in these rarely used words that I want to be careful to separate things that may differ from the automatic reflexive responses that people will have to words on a page.

JB is pretty good but with many words, it makes for a speedy single reading. I note that it interprets תחת as under the authority of. Perhaps, reading into the culture of the time, but that makes it rather more than a simple preposition.

The story itself is quite strange, drinking water that has been touched with holy dust from the floor of the tabernacle (the dwelling in my work)? It's a bit like pixie dust in a fairy tale. It is not very far from holy to magic.

Verse 3 - from male to female, a peculiar use of prepositions - but it's there. Maybe they recognized sexual identity issues in those days.

Verse 8 - it sounds as if the offense was terminal to the offended party. Perhaps it is a case of repaying the estate (in today's terms).

There are several asides in this chapter. E.g. verse 9-10 on the implied ownership of things.

I wonder if the jealousy offering is a new offering type. Perhaps.

Exodus 22

I could not think of a suitable synonym for burglar, so I left digs hard, my only gloss for this stem so far. I could have used burglar but that overlapped with another relatively rare word already apt for that gloss.

Verse 22 uses the doubling of stems extensively. I am told it is not common in modern Hebrew. In the KJV it is usually interpreted as intensification of the intent of the verb. In this verse I have ignored them. If one needed syllables for the music, one might think of a creative way to sing them.

Deuteronomy 20

How does one fight ___ enemies (verse 4). Fill in the blank. If I use על or ב or עם? Then what? Is it always against in the blank? Or is that all we can imagine?

Our excuse for this chapter is in Judges 3. There have to be some enemies left in the land. The ban was never complete. The only way to take 'enemies' and to distinguish good from evil (a primal task) is analogically or as must be, time-bound to the period of the writing of these instructions. We have plenty of internal enemies - fear, judgment, desire, etc. They need management at the least. And הזק, resolve. New Year's coming up.

Leviticus 13

Who knew leprosy was such a complex disease. The detail here I may well not have expressed in the most perfect medical terminology. I have been working this chapter for more than a month. A difficult thought process to read an ancient medical handbook.

For more on the disease see here: Modern medical scholars have identified the white spots described as symptoms of tzaraat as vitiligo, a disfiguring but otherwise harmless disease, or as psoriasis, a disease that results in thick silvery scales and itchy, dry, red patches on the skin.

The verbal connection between the baldness of a person (41-43) and the leprosy of a garment (v 55) is quite unexpected.

Curious that these 7 stems appear exactly 7 times in the chapter. אדם עמק כבס חיה פרח ראשׁ אשׁר. They are not always the same gloss in English, but mostly so. I say curious because my observations over the month were that the consistency of language usage only showed up after I had translated over half the words. Then the varied repeating patterns were more fully perceived by the software. Mind you, the software's (and my) initial guesses of the stems were sometimes off the mark.

4 words occur 6 times: נשא, שׁנה, כהה, כלי. Too many stats to go into. 26 words (except the usual common ones that I exclude) occur 10 or more times. So there is a lot of repeating language.

It would be acceptable to include an implied if in several verses where I have left the vav read as and. It is a bit like reading the internal coding of computer circuits with their and and or gates. There are other tongues, even English, where and can mean if. Similarly the normally causative conjunction כי is often if and may not even head the sentence. If may indeed have been implied without saying any conjunction. So any of the following may be read as if: ים, כי, ו, וים or no conjunction, but the sense implied from later in the verse. So Conjunctions in language like Prepositions are variable to a very large degree. Don't build a theology on conjunctions.

Verse 11 appears contradictory. The Greek has the opposite, but there is no need for quarantine since the leprosy has been proven. The treatment of the known leper is not specified here, but it may be implied by the final verses. Quarantine is different from permanent separation from the community.

Raw is simply חיה, life, living, quickened, etc. This is its first usage in the 70% done so far.
