Isaiah 23

Canaan is occasionally interpreted as shopkeeper. My Hebrew Latin concordance  (negotiator, mercator) allows it 4 times only: Zechariah 14.21, Proverbs 31.24, Job 41.6, Isaiah 23.8 (not vs 11 - but the pun seems intended). KJV adds Zephaniah 1.11, Isaiah 23:11, Ezekiel 17:4 and Hosea 12.7 using merchant or traffick as gloss. It seems that Canaan is a cipher for some kinds of trade. Very appropriate, perhaps less rare than considered especially in this chapter where Tyre becomes the supplier with a holy fee for the inhabitants of the presence of Yahweh.

I have moved all my glosses to a single stem כנען to be able to see them more easily for later analysis. This has been a pattern in the development of my glossary - to list all derived forms under the same stem unless there is a clear reason not to do so. The more detailed analysis of word forms can take place when the raw data are fully assembled.

Isaiah 23 Fn Min Max Syll
1 A load about Tyre,
Howl, O ships of Tarshish, for you are devastated of house, of entry. From the land of Kittim it was disclosed to them.

24
2 g Be mute, you inhabitants of the coast.
Vendors of Sidon across the sea have filled you.

9
3 And by the many waters, the seed of dawn, the harvest of the Nile will be her income.
And she is the vendor of nations.

6
4 B Be ashamed, Sidon, for the sea has made a pronouncement, the strength of the sea, saying,
I do not writhe, nor do I give birth, nor have I reared youths in their prime, or bred virgins.
3d 4B 13
21
5 As at the report for the Egyptians,
they will writhe at the report of Tyre.
3e 4A 9
7
6 Pass beyond Tarshish.
Howl, you inhabitants of the coast.
3e 4A 5
6
7 Is this for you exultation?
From the days of old, her antiquity, her feet escorted her far away to colonize.
3e 4C 7
18
8 C Who has counseled this against Tyre, the crown,
whose vendors are nobility, whose shopkeepers were the glorious of earth?
3e 4C 11
15
9 Yahweh of hosts counseled it,
to profane the pride of all status, to made light of all the glorious of earth.
3e 4B 8
16
10 Pass through your land as the Nile.
Daughter of Tarshish, there will be no further dislocation.
3e 4A 6
7
11 His hand he stretched out over the sea. He made kingdoms shudder.
Yahweh commanded Canaan to exterminate her strongholds.
3e 4B 12
14
12 But he said, You will not add further to exultation,
oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Kittim, arise, pass through. Even there, there will not be rest for you.
3e 4B 9
23
13 B Lo, the land of the Chaldeans, this is the people who were not. Ashur, he founded her for wild things.
He placed his watchtowers. He laid bare her citadels. He set her to be fallen.
3e 4C 19
19
14 Howl, O ships of Tarshish,
for devastated is your stronghold.
3e 4B 8
6
15 And it will happen in that day, Tyre will be forgotten a seventy year span, according to the days of one king.
At the end of a seventy year span, it will be for Tyre, as a singer of harlotry.
3e 4C 22
16
16 Take a harp. Go round the city of the forgotten harlot.
Perform many a good song, so that you will remember.
3d 4C 12
15
17 And it will be at the end of a seventy year span, Yahweh will visit Tyre and she will return to her fee,
and will play the harlot with all the kingdoms of the earth over the face of the ground.
3d 4C 22
18
18 And her wares and her fee will be holy to Yahweh. It will be neither in treasuries nor hoarded,
but her wares will be for the inhabitants of the presence of Yahweh, to eat, for satisfaction, and for durable covering.
