Leviticus 24

The Ambiguous Details of the Blasphemer Narrative, Leuchter, JBL, volume 130 #3 (2011) suggests that the story is meant to condemn the family and institutions founded by Solomon. There are some strange juxtapositions in this set of laws, following on from the judgments we have been reading. This passage rose up in my lists because of the repetition of the lex talionis. Also note the inclusio of the one who makes light, slights, or denies Yahweh. That story contains the other judgments.

Leuchter asks why the name of the mother is inserted into this case law. It is a puzzle. I wonder how I can reconcile נכה, strike, smite, etc with the gloss kill. I can't. It either means strike or kill not both. When I observe children and their competition, I see self-interest, violence, and slighting of each other. It is all part of the mix. And there are consequences, important steps in the thought process of human self-governance. They cannot be ultimate. I do like making challah, and the children like cake.
