Jeremiah 22

Taking sporadic breaks over the next several weeks. Busy on other things. I will miss working on the puzzle, but it will still be there after whatever breaks I take.

I picked a chapter of Jeremiah just to see what it was like after so much time on the cult and its sacrifices. Verse 3 is pleasing - it reflects the character of Yahweh in the Psalms. To act as this character acts is to know the same (verse 16). To fail to act this way, and the ruler reflects the character of the people, is a sad ending. Very sad, but no wailing is requested.

In the land before quotation marks, speech is often introduced by the word אמר, or saying. I also capitalize the first letter of direct speech. And here in verse 18, the word saying is omitted in the Hebrew. This is rare, but the rationale for it is clear. The writer is reporting the text of traditional laments at a wake. But they were not actually said in this case.

Jeremiah 22 Fn Min Max Syll
1 C Thus says Yahweh, Go down to the house of the king of Judah,
and speak there this word.
3e 4C 12
11
2 And say, Hear the word of Yahweh, king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David,
you and your servants and your people that come into these gates.
3e 4C 23
19
3 B Thus says Yahweh, Do judgment and righteousness and deliver one who is robbed from the hand of the oppressor,
And guest, orphan, and widow, do not suppress, do not do violence. And the blood of an innocent do not pour out in this place.
3e 4C 22
28
4 C For if you do, you do this thing, then sovereigns will enter into the gates of this house,
sitting for David on his throne, riders in the chariot and on horses, he and his servants and his people.
3e 4C 13
40
5 And if you will not hear these words,
by myself I have sworn, an oracle of Yahweh, that this house will be deserted.
3e 4C 13
19
6 Because thus says Yahweh, Concerning the house of the king of Judah, Gilead you are for me, the head of Lebanon,
if I do not set you as a wilderness, cities uninhabited.
3d 4C 22
13
7 And I will sanctify destroyers over you, a representative and its instruments,
and they will cut your choice cedars and have them fall on the fire.
3d 4B 14
16
8 And many nations will pass through this city,
and they will say, each to his friend, To what end did Yahweh do thus to this great city?
3e 4C 12
23
9 And they will say, In that they have forsaken the covenant of Yahweh their God,
and they have prostrated themselves to other gods and served them.
3d 4C 17
15
10 Do not weep for the dead nor show sympathy for them.
To weep, weep for the walker, because it will no longer return and see the land of its nativity.
3e 4C 11
21
11 B Because thus says Yahweh to Shallum child of Josiah, king of Judah, the king instead of Josiah his father, who went out from this place.
He will not return there any more.
3e 4C 40
4
12 ~ For in the place where they exiled him, he will die,
and this land he will not see any more.
3d 4B 12
11
13 B Alas for one who builds his house without righteousness and his upper rooms without judgment.
His associate serves for nothing, or he works him without giving what is due to him.
3e 4C 18
17
14 Saying, I will build for myself a measured house and ventilated upper rooms,
and he rips for himself windows, and panels with cedar, and anoints with vermilion.
3e 4C 17
20
15 Do you reign because you were fierce with cedar?
Your father, did he not eat and imbibe and do judgment and righteousness? And then it went well for him.
3c 4C 13
21
16 d He made the case, the case for the poor and needy. Then it was good.
Was not this to know me? An oracle of Yahweh.
3d 4B 9
12
17 B For there is nothing in your eyes or your heart except for your extortion,
and for the blood of the innocent to shed, and for oppression, and for damage to do.
3e 4C 14
21
18 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiachim child of Josiah, king of Judah,
They will not bewail him, Alas my brother, and alas sister. They will not bewail him, Alas Lord, or Alas his splendour.
3e 4C 36
14
19 In the tomb of an ass, he will be entombed,
ragged, and flung far removed from the gates of Jerusalem.
3e 4B 8
16
20 Ascend Lebanon and cry out, and in Bashan give your voice,
and cry out from those passing by, for shattered are all your lovers.
3e 4C 16
18
21 I have spoken to you in your ease, but you said, I will not hear.
This has been your way from your youth, for you have not heard with my voice.
3e 4C 17
14
22 All your shepherds, wind will shepherd, and your lovers into captivity will go,
for then you will be ashamed and humiliated from all your hurt.
3e 4C 18
14
23 Inhabitant in Lebanon that nests in cedars,
how you will supplicate when pangs come to you, writhing as if giving birth.
3e 4B 14
15
24 I, Living, an oracle of Yahweh, for if Konyah child of Jehoiachim king of Judah were the seal on my right hand,
that from there I would snap you.
3e 4C 30
6
25 So I will give you into the hand of those who seek your integrity, and into the hand of whom you are in terror from their presence,
and into the hand of Nebukadretsar king of Babel, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
3d 4B 23
16
26 And I will throw you down and your mother who gave you birth, to another land where you were not born,
and there you will die.
3e 4C 29
5
27 But to the land that they are partial to for themselves to return there,
thereto they will not return.
3d 4B 17
6
28 An idol despised, smashed, is this man Konyah? or a vessel in which there is no delight?
Why is he hurled down and his seed, and flung to the land that they do not know?
3e 4C 21
23
29 f O land, O land, O land,
hear the word of Yahweh.
3e 4A 6
6
30 B Thus says Yahweh, Write this man childless, valour that will not prosper in its days,
for no representative from his seed will prosper to sit on the throne of David and govern any more in Judah.
