1 Samuel 28
בְּעֵ֥ין דּֽוֹר - could be translated as 'in the eye of a generation'. The woman of Endor would be a seer. The word I have rendered as superior, is the word for husband, Baal, בעל. The algorithm keeps translating Saul as the grave and tried bring up as burnt offering. The letter patterns do not differ. The possible double entendre is suggestive along with the Baal language as to the 'lack of control' of superstition and ritual that might be implied. Scholarly article here with nice pictures. [His solution to the sequence of events is not satisfactory to me. What is the problem with the woman remembering her image of Samuel 'in her mind' and recognizing the compromised psyche of Saul? I don't see the problem, and at first glance ותרא does not appear as a form of ירא anywhere. Except maybe verse 5.]

Leviticus 11
After Deuteronomy 14, we should have expected a set of parallels somewhere to pop up. And here it is in Leviticus 11, more beasts and fish.
Note vulture is in this chapter דאה and in Deuteronomy ראה. You can see how easily these two might be confused by a copyist. Detest them both if you must. Maybe eat tofu instead!
Verse 46 uses נפשׁ for every living thing on the earth. I have resisted allowing put as a gloss for נתן. It would be much less awkward if I allowed it. I use set, put and a bunch of other less common glosses for שים. These very commonly used verbs are more flexible than I have considered. It is possible on final review in a few years that I will loosen the rules I have just tightened a bit.

Deuteronomy 14
With this chapter, we have read the 'beginning' and the 'end' of Deuteronomy. chapters 20-25 remain. The book is at nearly 90% complete. On the one hand I am delighted because Deuteronomy was Peter Craigie's specialty. And this week was the anniversary of his death. I am also pleased that this chapter brings Torah to nearly 60% complete. I am surprised as well. It was not necessarily 'the plan' to complete Torah next after completing the poetry books, and the scrolls which are keys to Torah.
Sometimes I just can't believe how hard this is. How many ways does one have to say, cloven, divided, riven, bisected? How many different roots are needed in a tongue to make this instruction clear? And chewing the cud, ruminating, regurgitating?, is bringing up (עלה) food from the double stomached beast. And naming all these animals.

Let Ithamar minister with a chamois. What does it tell us about the ancient practices of food production? There must have been a fishing industry and ranching and farming and hunting. I wonder if the genus is boar, or swine, or pig. I have not used the last two glosses yet. Do I need to? So many birds of prey!

1 Samuel 27
Another short chapter. There is work going on behind the scenes though on long chapters.
A full year appears to be just 'days' ימים by itself. Verse 7. This is the only verse I have seen with a rest between the subject and the predicate. (Music here) It's perfectly fine in Hebrew, but is odd in English if you render ויהי as was and try to make it read as a sentence.
I have allowed the gloss of country and countryside for סדה which to date I have rendered only as field.

4 | And it was told Saul that David had run away to Gath, and he again no longer sought him. | 3e | 4B | 11 7 | |

Isaiah 35
Another short chapter of Isaiah, just to keep the wheels turning.
| Isaiah 35 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll | ||
| יְשֻׂשׂ֥וּם מִדְבָּ֖ר וְצִיָּ֑ה וְתָגֵ֧ל עֲרָבָ֛ה וְתִפְרַ֖ח כַּחֲבַצָּֽלֶת | 1 | Wilderness will sing for joy, and arid place, and steppe will rejoice and flourish like a crocus. | 3c | 4A | 8 14 | |

The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the honour of the plantation and the plain. They, they will see the glory of Yahweh, the honour of our God. | 3d | 4C | 31 14 | |
| חַזְּק֖וּ יָדַ֣יִם רָפ֑וֹת וּבִרְכַּ֥יִם כֹּשְׁל֖וֹת אַמֵּֽצוּ | 3 | Make resolute timid hands, and stumbling knees assure. | 3e | 4B | 6 8 | |

Joy and mirth they will overtake, and sadness and sighing will withdraw. | 3e | 4C | 24 17 |

Joshua 8
This chapter continues the less appealing parts of the canon. I have allowed the name Ai to stand translated as Shambles. We are a shambles. But one has to work very hard to explain away the ban by allegory. The word for scale is the same as used in the story of David and the Philistine. Verse 25 is an example of the inclusive nature of אישׁ, male and female.
| Joshua 8 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll | ||
| וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ אַל־תִּירָ֣א וְאַל־תֵּחָ֔ת קַ֣ח עִמְּךָ֗ אֵ֚ת כָּל־עַ֣ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְק֖וּם עֲלֵ֣ה הָעָ֑י רְאֵ֣ה ׀ נָתַ֣תִּי בְיָדְךָ֗ אֶת־מֶ֤לֶךְ הָעַי֙ וְאֶת־עַמּ֔וֹ וְאֶת־עִיר֖וֹ וְאֶת־אַרְצֽוֹ | 1 | And Yahweh said to Joshua, Do not fear and do not be in disarray. Take your people, all the people of the battle and arise, go up to the Shambles. See, I have given into your hand the king of the Shambles, and with him, both his city and his land. | 3e | 4C | 33 25 | |
| וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ לָעַ֜י וּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤יתָ לִֽירִיחוֹ֙ וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ רַק־שְׁלָלָ֥הּ וּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּ תָּבֹ֣זּוּ לָכֶ֑ם שִׂים־לְךָ֥ אֹרֵ֛ב לָעִ֖יר מֵאַחֲרֶֽיהָ | 2 | And you will do to the Shambles and to her king as you have done to Jericho and to her king. Solely her spoil and her cattle you will loot for yourselves. Set for yourself an ambush for the city behind her. | 3d | 4C | 33 12 | |
| וַיָּ֧קָם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ וְכָל־עַ֥ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה לַעֲל֣וֹת הָעָ֑י וַיִּבְחַ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים אֶ֤לֶף אִישׁ֙ גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֔יִל וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֖ם לָֽיְלָה | 3 | And Joshua arose and all the people of battle to go up to the Shambles. And Joshua chose thirty thousand soldiers, the valiant of the force, and he sent them by night. | 3c | 4C | 19 25 | |
You will lie in wait for the city from behind the city, not very far away from the city, and be, all of you, prepared. | 3e | 4C | 29 8 | |
| וַאֲנִ֗י וְכָל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֔י נִקְרַ֖ב אֶל־הָעִ֑יר וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יֵצְא֤וּ לִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם | 5 | And I and all the people that are with me will approach against the city, and it will be that when they come forth to encounter us, as at the first, that we will withdraw before them. | 3e | 4C | 16 23 | |
| וְיָצְא֣וּ אַחֲרֵ֗ינוּ עַ֣ד הַתִּיקֵ֤נוּ אוֹתָם֙ מִן־הָעִ֔יר כִּ֣י יֹֽאמְר֔וּ נָסִ֣ים לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְנַ֖סְנוּ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם | 6 | And they will come forth after us till we have detached them from the city, for they will say, They withdraw before us as at the first. And we will withdraw before them. | 3e | 4C | 33 6 | |
| וְאַתֶּ֗ם תָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ מֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔ב וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הָעִ֑יר וּנְתָנָ֛הּ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם בְּיֶדְכֶֽם | 7 | Then you will arise from the ambush and you will possess the city, and Yahweh your God will give it into your hand. | 3d | 4B | 17 12 | |
| וְהָיָ֞ה כְּתָפְשְׂכֶ֣ם אֶת־הָעִ֗יר תַּצִּ֤יתוּ אֶת־הָעִיר֙ בָּאֵ֔שׁ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ רְא֖וּ צִוִּ֥יתִי אֶתְכֶֽם | 8 | And it will be when you have occupied the city, you will char the city in the fire. According to the word of Yahweh you will do. See. I have commanded you. | 3e | 4C | 25 7 | |
| וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֶל־הַמַּאְרָ֔ב וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֣ם לָעָ֑י וַיָּ֧לֶן יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַה֖וּא בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם | 9 | And Joshua sent them, and they went to the ambush and they settled between Bethel and the Shambles, seaward of the Shambles, and Joshua lodged in that night in the midst of people. | 3c | 4B | 29 16 | |
| וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד אֶת־הָעָ֑ם וַיַּ֨עַל ה֜וּא וְזִקְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם הָעָֽי | 10 | And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and conscripted the people, and he went up, he and the elders of Israel before the people, to the Shambles. | 3c | 4C | 16 16 | |
| וְכָל־הָעָ֨ם הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֗וֹ עָלוּ֙ וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ נֶ֣גֶד הָעִ֑יר וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעַ֔י וְהַגַּ֖י בֵּינָ֥יו וּבֵין־הָעָֽי | 11 | And all the people for the battle that were with him went up and made overture, and they came before the city. And they encamped from the north of the Shambles. The gorge was between them and the Shambles. | 3e | 4B | 24 17 | |
| וַיִּקַּ֕ח כַּחֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיָּ֨שֶׂם אוֹתָ֜ם אֹרֵ֗ב בֵּ֧ין בֵּֽית־אֵ֛ל וּבֵ֥ין הָעַ֖י מִיָּ֥ם לָעִֽיר | 12 | And he took about five thousand men, and he set them to lie in wait between Bethel and the Shambles seaward of the city. | 3c | 4A | 11 18 | |
| וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ הָעָ֜ם אֶת־כָּל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ מִצְּפ֣וֹן לָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־עֲקֵב֖וֹ מִיָּ֣ם לָעִ֑יר וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַה֖וּא בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעֵֽמֶק | 13 | And they set the people in place, all the camp that were northward of the city, and those with foot firmly planted seaward of the city, and Joshua went in that night in the midst of the valley. | 3c | 4B | 27 17 | |
| וַיְהִ֞י כִּרְא֣וֹת מֶֽלֶךְ־הָעַ֗י וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ וַיֵּצְא֣וּ אַנְשֵֽׁי־הָעִ֣יר לִקְרַֽאת־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה ה֧וּא וְכָל־עַמּ֛וֹ לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה וְהוּא֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּֽי־אֹרֵ֥ב ל֖וֹ מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י הָעִֽיר | 14 | And it happened that when the king of the Shambles saw, they moved swiftly and they rose early and the soldiers of the city went forth to the call of Israel to war, he and all with him, to engage before the steppe. And he not did know that an ambush for him was behind the city. | 3c | 4B | 45 14 | |
| וַיִּנָּֽגְע֛וּ יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּֽר | 15 | And Joshua and all Israel made as if contagion before them, and withdrew the way of the wilderness. | 3d | 4A | 16 9 | |
| וַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּ כָּל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּעַ֔י לִרְדֹּ֖ף אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַיִּנָּתְק֖וּ מִן־הָעִֽיר | 16 | And all the people were appealed to that were in the Shambles to pursue after them, and they pursued after Joshua and were detached from the city. | 3e | 4B | 18 18 | |
| וְלֹֽא־נִשְׁאַ֣ר אִ֗ישׁ בָּעַי֙ וּבֵ֣ית אֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יָצְא֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ אֶת־הָעִיר֙ פְּתוּחָ֔ה וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל | 17 | And no man was still there in the Shambles or Bethel who did not come forth after Israel, and they forsook the open city, and pursued after Israel. | 3e | 4C | 21 20 | |
| וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ נְ֠טֵה בַּכִּיד֤וֹן אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ אֶל־הָעַ֔י כִּ֥י בְיָדְךָ֖ אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה וַיֵּ֧ט יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ בַּכִּיד֥וֹן אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָד֖וֹ אֶל־הָעִֽיר | 18 | And Yahweh said to Joshua, Stretch out with the scale that is in your hand to the Shambles, for into your hand I will give it. And Joshua stretched out with the scale that was in his hand against the city. | 3c | 4C | 30 17 | |
| וְהָאוֹרֵ֡ב קָם֩ מְהֵרָ֨ה מִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹ וַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙ כִּנְט֣וֹת יָד֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ הָעִ֖יר וַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָ וַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּ וַיַּצִּ֥יתוּ אֶת־הָעִ֖יר בָּאֵֽשׁ | 19 | And those lying in wait arose swiftly from their place and they raced as he stretched out his hand, and they entered the city and conquered it. They moved swiftly and charred the city in the fire. | 3e | 4C | 29 13 | |
| וַיִּפְנ֣וּ אַנְשֵׁי֩ הָעַ֨י אַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם וַיִּרְא֗וּ וְהִנֵּ֨ה עָלָ֜ה עֲשַׁ֤ן הָעִיר֙ הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה וְלֹא־הָיָ֨ה בָהֶ֥ם יָדַ֛יִם לָנ֖וּס הֵ֣נָּה וָהֵ֑נָּה וְהָעָם֙ הַנָּ֣ס הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר נֶהְפַּ֖ךְ אֶל־הָרוֹדֵֽף | 20 | When the soldiers of the Shambles faced behind them, they saw, and behold the smoke of the city ascended towards the heavens, and it was not in their hands to withdraw here or there, and the people withdrawing to the wilderness turned on those who pursued. | 3d | 4C | 41 14 | |
| וִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ וְכָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל רָא֗וּ כִּֽי־לָכַ֤ד הָֽאֹרֵב֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וְכִ֥י עָלָ֖ה עֲשַׁ֣ן הָעִ֑יר וַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּ וַיַּכּ֖וּ אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָעָֽי | 21 | When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had conquered the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they returned and struck the men of the Shambles. | 3e | 4C | 27 12 | |
| וְאֵ֨לֶּה יָצְא֤וּ מִן־הָעִיר֙ לִקְרָאתָ֔ם וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ אֵ֥לֶּה מִזֶּ֖ה וְאֵ֣לֶּה מִזֶּ֑ה וַיַּכּ֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם עַד־בִּלְתִּ֥י הִשְׁאִֽיר־ל֖וֹ שָׂרִ֥יד וּפָלִֽיט | 22 | And these came forth from the city to encounter them, and they were in the midst of Israel, these from this and these from this, and they struck them till they were without a trace of survivor or security. | 3e | 4C | 30 16 | |
| וְאֶת־מֶ֥לֶךְ הָעַ֖י תָּ֣פְשׂוּ חָ֑י וַיַּקְרִ֥בוּ אֹת֖וֹ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ | 23 | And the king of the Shambles they arrested alive, and brought him near to Joshua. | 3e | 4B | 9 11 | |
