1 Kings 12

The Kings are back. And pieces of 2 Chronicles 10 get guessed also (86%). Some notes below.

1 Kings 12 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem,
for to Shechem, all Israel had come to make him king.
3d 4A 8
13
2 And it was when Jeroboam child of Nebat heard, (and he was yet in Egypt, where he ran away from the presence of the king Solomon,
and Jeroboam settled in Egypt),
3e 4B 31
10
3 that they sent and called to him, and Jeroboam came and all the congregation of Israel,
and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
3e 4B 21
9
4 Your father hardened our shackles.
So you now lighten the service your father hardened, and his heavy shackles that he assigned to us, and we will serve you.
3c 4B 9
36
5 And he said to them, Go for three days, then return to me.
And the people went.
3d 4B 19
5
6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had stood before Solomon his father when he was alive, and he said,
How do you advise replying with a word to this people?
3e 4C 34
16
7 And they spoke to him, saying, If today you will be a servant of this people, and will serve them and answer them, and speak to them good things,
then they will be your servants every day.
3d 4C 38
12
8 But he forsook the counsel of the elders with which they advised him,
and he took advice from the male peers that promoted him who had standing in his presence.
3d 4B 16
22
9 And he said to them, What you do advise that we may reply with a word to this people,
who have spoken to me, saying, Lighten the shackle that your father assigned to us.
3e 4C 22
23
10 And they spoke to him, the male peers that promoted him, saying, Thus you say to this people who have spoken to you, saying, Your father made our shackles heavy so you lighten for us.
Thus you will speak to them, My wee is thicker than the loins of my father.
3e 4C 50
17
11 And now my father has made you carry a heavy shackle, and I, I will add to your shackle.
My father chastened you with scourges, and I, I will chasten you with scorpions.
3e 4C 21
21
12 And Jeroboam and all the people came in to Rehoboam on the third day,
as the king had spoken, saying, Return to me on the third day.
3c 4C 19
19
13 And the king answered the people with intransigence,
and he forsook the counsel of the elders with which they had advised him.
3c 4A 11
16
14 And he spoke to them according to the advice of the male peers, saying, My father made your shackle heavy and I, I will add to your shackle.
My father chastened you with scourges and I, I will chasten you with scorpions.
3e 4C 29
21
15 So the king did not hear the people,
for the context was from Yahweh, so that he might uphold his word that Yahweh spoke by the hand of Achiyah the Shilonite to Jeroboam child of Nebat.
3e 4C 9
40
16 And all Israel saw that the king did not pay heed to them, and the people replied to the king a word, saying, What is our share in David? And no inheritance in the child of Jesse. To your tents Israel. Now see to your house, David.
And Israel went to its tents.
3e 4B 61
10
17 But the children of Israel, those inhabiting in the cities of Judah,
... and Rehoboam reigned over them.
3e 4B 14
9
18 And the king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tax, and all Israel pelted him with stone and he died.
Then the king Rehoboam made sure to get himself up into a chariot to withdraw to Jerusalem.
3d 4B 32
23
19 So Israel transgressed, in the house of David, to this day. 3e 4C 16
20 And it happened as all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent and called him to the assembly, and they made him king over all Israel.
None there was who followed the house of David, except the sceptre of Judah alone.
3e 4C 39
20
21 And Rehoboam entered Jerusalem and convened all the house of Judah and the sceptre of Benjamin, a hundred eighty thousand chosen, to make war,
to fight with the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam, child of Solomon.
3d 4B 40
23
22 But the word of God happened to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 3e 4B 19
23 Say to Rehoboam, child of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin,
and the remainder of the people, saying,
3e 4C 26
7
24 B Thus says Yahweh, Do not go up and do not fight with your kin, the children of Israel. Return each to his own house, for from me is this matter,
When they heard the word of Yahweh, then they turned to go, according to the word of Yahweh.
3c 4C 39
20
25 And Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim and settled in it,
and he went out from there and built Penuel.
3c 4B 17
12
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart,
now the kingdom will revert to the house of David.
3d 4A 9
12
27 If this people go up to do offerings in the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will return to their master, to Rehoboam, king of Judah,
and they will slay me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.
3e 4C 43
17
28 And the king took counsel and he constructed two calves of gold.
And he said to them, Too much it is for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
3e 4C 16
37
29 And he set the one in Bethel,
and the other he assigned in Dan.
3e 4A 10
9
30 And this matter became sin,
and the people went into the presence of the one to Dan.
3d 4A 10
12
31 And he constructed a house of high places,
and he made priests from the magistrates of the people who were not from the children of Levi.
3e 4C 7
18
32 And Jeroboam made a festive sacrifice, in the eighth new moon on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he offered on the altar. So he did in Bethel, offering to the calves that he had made.
And he installed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he made.
3e 4C 56
18
33 And he offered on the altar that he had made in Bethel, on the fifteenth day in the eighth new moon, in a new moon that he had contrived from his own heart.
And he made a festive sacrifice for the children of Israel, and he offered on the altar to burn incense.

What did the father do to the people? Chasten, warn, chastise, tutor, mentor, bewilder? I have not used chastise anywhere, but as I look at the word יסר and its usage, it seems much bigger than the idea of punishment or forced labour.

My real problem with glosses is their usage and the prejudice I bring to them. And the problem is perceiving the tone, almost a musical issue. I suppose too, it depends on whether I trust the subject who is administering the governance, whether it is a mentoring or a bewildering. Is this word in the domain of trouble-bound (i.e. punishment) or of promise-teaching? Or am I simply arranging glosses in the domains of my own biases? Perhaps my domains must be assigned to the gloss in its context. Yes, I have absorbed something of the principles of exegesis, but the contexts (סבב) are so wide... In this case, it is from Yahweh!

It does seem clear, however, that the son will not be a better ruler than the father. (We have met such people, I am sure, who are advised by their male peers.) And though the father's reign has been romanticized, he was not very good for the people either. Do you suppose that we deserve the rulers we get?

What does Yahweh do? When the word pair למען הקים occurs, is Yahweh upholding, placing, or raising up the object? A translator has to chose one. Is it the same one in each instance? Not necessarily. Though I try to be reasonable, my decision may vary depending on the object. See 1 Kings 2:4  raise up his word that he spoke of me, 12:15 uphold his word, 2 Kings 23:24 uphold the words of instruction, Deuteronomy 8:18 uphold his covenant, 9:5 place the matter, 29:12 uphold you, Jeremiah 11:5 place the oath. Perhaps I should change 1 Kings 2:4?

What does Israel do? They transgressed. They did not rebel. Here there is a value judgment from the author which I think must be preserved. Here I feel the translator should not choose a synonym in the guest language.

What did the army of Judah and Benjamin not do? They actually didn't go to war. Does that make Judah and Benjamin obedient (in this case)?

Ezekiel 8

The prophet travels in his memory, a dreamlike set of visions. Perhaps he was an old man remembering things. Note the association of violence with inadequate worship practice.

Ezekiel 8 Fn Min Max Syll

1 And it happened in the sixth year on the fifth of the sixth month, I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah sat before me,
and there, fell upon me, the hand of my Lord Yahweh.

2 And I saw, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of fire, from the appearance of its waist and downward, fire,
and from its waist and upward, as the appearance of brilliance, as the colour of amber.

3 And he extended the shape of a hand, and took me by a tassel of my head,
and spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me toward Jerusalem, in the appearances of God, to the door of the gate of the presence, facing northward, where there is the seat of the statue, the acquired jealousy.

And I lifted up my eyes the way northward, and behold, from the treasured place to the gate of the altar, this statue of the jealousy in the entrance.

Ezekiel 3

It almost looks like I am reading this in sequence. I have restricted by books to just three for the last week: Ezekiel, Genesis, and Proverbs. Ezekiel since it is new to me, Genesis since I have left out large sections of the most famous stories. And Proverbs so I can get close to finishing all the poetry books. Proverbs do not lend themselves to automated translation. They are in the low percentages (11-33%) when I start them. Ezekiel now has a few chapters above 50%. The computer is 'getting used to' the phrasing of Ezekiel. And Genesis has just one at 50%, guessed before I start it, the rest below that. For some reason I have tired of the former prophets. I suspect that will change. Minds are fickle. There are famous sections of them that I have not done like the Elijah-Elisha cycle.

The English in this chapter is particularly Hebraic for some odd reason. And in the generic revelation, I again used 'it / its' as a non-gender-specific personal pronoun. It's odd of course. I use the male personal pronoun for Yahweh, and the female for spirit, whatever is 'meant' by that word, but this does not mean that either is male or female, rather and than or. Consider the lifting up and entering and speaking of the same in our hearts. May we learn to hear and pay heed. Verse 12b has possibilities for Christian interpretation.

In spite of the great 19th century duet, Watchman, what of the Night, (smile) I cannot use watchman for its root (שׁמר) or its gender specific content. The word is the word for a spy, צפה, not the famous spies of Jericho, where the word is רגל, foot, on foot etc. I may regret some of these decisions, but my silicate comb is untangling (some of) the cross-linked tradition glosses if I am wrong or if I am not.

Hebrew frequently has a verb-subject word order. Sometimes the complex subject is too long to put before the verb without upsetting the ornamentation in the music of the verse. Be aware. Read slowly.

Proverbs 26

Proverbs pose puzzling pieces for the reader. In the KJV, the first and second parts of the verse are sometimes reversed. The drama of the puzzle is lost. There is a caesura between these two parts. One cannot put them in reverse order without doing the readers' work for them. What's the point of that?

Proverbs also point out word nuances that a translator may not yet have seen. This chapter was only 20% guessed by my software - I took it from the bottom of the list in hopes of finding things that would propagate the guesswork to other places. Some of these proverbs strike me as bad examples, or as examples I don't believe are true of good human behaviour. One needs to love the dullard - whatever that means. All of us of course need effective governance. The dullard is not fool nor is it the traditional fool of Psalms 14 and 53 (who is not a fool at all, but senseless). There are three differing roots here and they need to be kept separate or we will only learn prejudice rather than love.

Evil-(2 - part of a named person), foolish(7), foolishly(1), foolishness(11), maybe(14), obstinate(9)
כסל dullard's(2), dullard(23), dullards(21), folly(8), hip(1), Ksil(1 location name), stupid(3), stupidity(1)
נבל collapses(1), corpse(5), corpses(10), demeans(1), lute(8), lutes(4), make senseless(1), senseless women(1), senseless(11), senselessness(7), skin-bottle(2), skin-bottles(2), wither(7), withering(1)

Those are what I have derived so far from usage patterns. Several homonyms in the last one. I should not use folly strictly speaking, but there is no generic term for the stuff that dullards do. (Who knows, I may change this. I could use stupidity, but the word is too full of spit.)

With punishment in mind, I do not use rod as the KJV does with its 16th century assumption of the benefits of corporal punishment. The word is sceptre, a 'rod' that symbolizes good governance, not punishment. The end effect of good governance is peace and learning and maturity in those things that should be fostered among us humans. I don't see as much of that as I should within some locales.

For me in much of this poetic context of Proverbs, 'it / its' are personal non-gender-specific pronouns. The first several verses are about dullard, the next several about sluggard, and the remainder roughly about dissension and nattering.

Genesis 36

Names are a problem. I have no particular desire with respect to them. The ones that are common I generally leave the traditional gloss (unless there are distinct spellings even for the same person). The ones that are never remembered, I try to use a reasonably consistent transliteration. But I admit it is tricky.

In this chapter we see that the ancients were aware that humans have an impact on the environment. In this case is it due to an abundance of livestock. The phrase is similar to that used of Abram and Lot in Genesis 13. Land is a major asset. They consider themselves guests (גור) according to my glosses, stranger being reserved for זור.

In this chapter we have the origin of Amaleq, or Amalek. I would prefer the q but tradition has the k and he is famous as the image of the flesh and the enemy of Saul and others. I am confortable with the analogical interpretation. This seems to me to be a positive way to use these texts of horror effectively. As I see it, suppose you were God... if you have to teach an intransigent and stubborn humanity, you have to paint a realistic picture for it, and the reality is that we are violent, self-serving, and fearful and we need to learn to use the powers that have been entrusted to us: of sex, of wealth, of care, for the benefit of others (not excluding ourselves), while at the same time preserving the independent growth and responsibility of these same others - to whom the same powers have been entrusted. If we see the picture so painted, perhaps we can learn.

There is a large amount of redundancy in this chapter. The idea is that we are not to forget who Edom is. (Redundancy is a good aspect of system design. If one part fails, another takes over.) There are some discrepancies between Genesis 36 and 1 Chronicles, in one case (Gen 36:27, 1 Chr 1:42) a vav for a yod is switched. I suspect the vav is intended in each case. Dishon and Dishan have varied spellings and 1 Chronicles uses additional vavs for clarity.

I wonder if I have too many commas in these lists. As I said when I did 1 Chronicles, now updated slightly, I must be mad. And why would anyone set this to music? And what would it mean for them? Try the music for this chapter and compare it to 1 Chronicles. I wonder ... Tell me what you find (he said hopefully).
