2 Kings 13
The end of the story of Elisha. There seem to be some asides from the narrator. And nothing is made of the touching of the bones. This story must have had an effect on the issue of relics in the medieval world.
Jeremiah 27
Verses 7 and 8 are an analogy to the completion of those who serve the Invisible. An unattractive analogy in many ways. But note the emphasis on the gentiles in TNK. The opinion of Egypt is valued by Yahweh in Deuteronomy 9:28 as noted earlier this month, then David is the grandson of a Moabite as noted among other gentiles in the opening chapter of Matthew, and here Nebuchadnezzar, the foreign king, a servant of Yahweh. So how are we to be completed in our refusal of the shackle of rule? I won't put it in a few words, but in our ontological anger, we all desperately need such completion. I find it strange here that it is that very positive word, תמם, that is used here. I never use it with a negative connotation in my renderings.
With the abundance of false news today, we too have a hard time distinguishing truth from falsehood, good from evil, and love from self-interest.

2 Kings 16
I recall when I read these 40 to 50 years ago (in various English translations) that I thought, what were they doing with all this worship of idols? Passing through fire, I could figure out. Not a good idea. But the idea of idolatry was a bit of a mystery. It boils down in my mind these days to three things - abuse of gifts, abuse of power, whether material, money, sex, or status, and the resulting violent fracturing of human relationships, to each other and to the created order. In this chapter, for a while, one might think that Ahaz was an artist, and appreciative of foreign customs, but for one reason or another, he needed the king of Ashur to support him, and he was quite willing to impress that foreign potentate with his control over the religious framework of Jerusalem. Perhaps this also violates a separation of priestly, prophetic and political power in Israel. Certainly there is plenty of political intrigue here and plenty of violence. But mostly his offence was that Yahweh was not a priority, but an afterthought.
I should probably not draw any final conclusions from these meandering thoughts.
2 Kings just appeared at the top of my lists. After messing about somewhat with Daniel in Aramaic, and various random verses looking for pieces of the puzzle I have not yet turned over, I have decided to just keep on picking the top of the automated suggestions. (Next up is Jeremiah 27.)

Jeremiah 11
Is it just my imagination or is there considerable overlap between Jeremiah and Deuteronomy? My algorithms for guessing words and phrases are having high performance with both these. Either they both duplicate themselves or they duplicate each other in their phrasing.
There is also uniqueness in Jeremiah as illustrated in this chapter (60% guessed by the computer before I started my review).
Of the 304,727 pieces in (my version of) this puzzle, I have 39,442 that have not yet been turned over (13%), 94,375 (30%) that are single word guesses, 50,677 (17%) that are double word guesses, and 23,147 (8%) that are better than double word guesses. The remaining 32% are in the 413 completed chapters, almost 100,000 pieces (97,086) placed. The ones that are placed are changeable. While doing Jeremiah 11, I discovered an omission in Psalm 106. These are two of about 50 places where the phrase their sons and their daughters occurs. Now that I have it right, those two word guesses will have been increased by 48, and when these verses come up I can press the button to confirm the guesses.
I once had an image of the synoptic Gospels laid out on a table as John constructed his. That is a physically smaller puzzle. I suspect whoever wrote it had the grander puzzle in his memory in the author's own special form. Now let's think about the software to construct John... from NT and Septuagint?
This would be a tough phrase to guess. (John 5:39) I venture it would be in the pieces not yet turned over.
ἐρευνᾶτε τὰς γραφάς ὅτι ὑμεῖς δοκεῖτε ἐν αὐταῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
Here is Delitzch's version
Well, that is a bit of a distraction from this post.
Here is the prophet of doom.

אתם דרשׁים מעל־כתבי הקדשׁ כי בהם אתם אמרים חיי עולם
Interesting to me that my Hebrew NT (an inheritance for me from the library of John Sandys-Wunsch with thanks to his wife, Sheila), has the word for holy in it. Not in the Greek.ἐρευνᾶτε τὰς γραφάς ὅτι ὑμεῖς δοκεῖτε ἐν αὐταῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
Here is Delitzch's version
דִּרְשׁוּ בַכְּתָבִים אֲשֶׁר תֹּאמְרוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָכֶם חַיֵּי עוֹלָם
How would you set this to the music of the accents? I think that would be a challenge. The Hutter polyglot from 1599 does not have readable accents. But this one does from Margoliuth. When you consider how connected the music is between verses and even between distant chapters, I can imagine the opening of John reflecting Genesis 1 and its opening major triad. (But it doesn't). Perhaps I would use poetic accents in some places.
| This verse begins with a turn on the third syllable and a long recital on the tonic. The move from c to g on לכם בהם occurs only in Deuteronomy 13:15 - unusual. |
Here is the prophet of doom.

Deuteronomy 26
The Israelite is taught here how to pray. Note the change in personal pronoun in the rehearsed speech. Verse 13 raises the question, what do we do with holiness? We are to burn it (kindle) like political capital. As usual, my glosses are unconventional. All words related to the domain of fire, heat, anger and so on are separated and not overlapped. There may be 1 Hebrew to many English, but I try very hard to avoid 1 English mapping back to many Hebrew. Sometimes there are legitimate homonyms in Hebrew, but often, as in this case, the traditional translations have given up and assigned a common English word (in this case bring/brought) to a Hebrew root that is not justified by the usage. And here we thought the 17th century translators did not guess at a rendering! Sorry - they did and frequently. JB has: I have cleared my house of all that was consecrated. Nice, but it isn't 'my' house - that's bordering on too individualistic. Kindle suggests both sacrifice and I think of Psalm 2. He kindles as a hint of his anger. Such is the delicate yet comprehensive nature of this relationship that is without compromise or workaround (verse 14).
Note the play on what is holiness. It is the fullness of the treasury of goods and services and everything else visible and invisible, that we can provide from the created and uncreated order for each other and for all.
In this chapter, (initially) I added affirm as a variation on my glosses for אמר, where I already use words like say, promise, talk, pronounce, vocal (once for an acrostic). When I add a gloss like this, I wonder how many places I might change in the past. It is interesting to me that if there is such a place, it is the nature of my patterns that I seem to find it eventually. [In this case I have rejected the experiment. I need affirm for the awkward language of Jeremiah 44.]
As I complete the process, I will probably write verification routines that scan already translated areas for anomalies on the sentence and gloss level. Believe it or not, I am still updating the online translations if I make such a change. They are a sort of cloud back up for me at this point. Today I hope to do something about that lack of backup.

Deuteronomy 10
Of which much could be written, but nothing is needed. Do laugh, a little.
| Deuteronomy 10 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll | ||
| בָּעֵ֨ת הַהִ֜וא אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֣ה אֵלַ֗י פְּסָל־לְךָ֞ שְׁנֵֽי־לֻוחֹ֤ת אֲבָנִים֙ כָּרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים וַעֲלֵ֥ה אֵלַ֖י הָהָ֑רָה וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ לְּךָ֖ אֲר֥וֹן עֵֽץ | 1 | At that time Yahweh said to me, Sculpt your two tablets of stone like the first and come up to me towards the hill, and construct your ark of lumber. | 3c | 4C | 33 9 | |
| וְאֶכְתֹּב֙ עַל־הַלֻּחֹ֔ת אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָי֛וּ עַל־הַלֻּחֹ֥ת הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר שִׁבַּ֑רְתָּ וְשַׂמְתָּ֖ם בָּאָרֽוֹן | 2 | And I will write upon the tablets the things that were upon the former tablets that you broke, and you will put them in the ark. | 3d | 4B | 28 6 | |
| וָאַ֤עַשׂ אֲרוֹן֙ עֲצֵ֣י שִׁטִּ֔ים וָאֶפְסֹ֛ל שְׁנֵי־לֻחֹ֥ת אֲבָנִ֖ים כָּרִאשֹׁנִ֑ים וָאַ֣עַל הָהָ֔רָה וּשְׁנֵ֥י הַלֻּחֹ֖ת בְּיָדִֽי | 3 | And I made an ark of acacia lumber and I sculpted two tablets of stone like the first, and I went up towards the hill and the two tablets in my hand. | 3d | 4C | 22 14 | |
| וַיִּכְתֹּ֨ב עַֽל־הַלֻּחֹ֜ת כַּמִּכְתָּ֣ב הָרִאשׁ֗וֹן אֵ֚ת עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּר֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֲלֵיכֶ֥ם בָּהָ֛ר מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֵ֖שׁ בְּי֣וֹם הַקָּהָ֑ל וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָֽי | 4 | And he inscribed upon the tablets, like the first inscription, the ten words that Yahweh spoke to you on the hill from the midst of the fire in the day of the congregation. And Yahweh gave them to me. | 3d | 4C | 40 7 | |
| וָאֵ֗פֶן וָֽאֵרֵד֙ מִן־הָהָ֔ר וָֽאָשִׂם֙ אֶת־הַלֻּחֹ֔ת בָּאָר֖וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֑יתִי וַיִּ֣הְיוּ שָׁ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוַּ֖נִי יְהוָֽה | 5 | And I faced about and I descended from the hill, and I put the tablets in the ark that I had made, and they are there as Yahweh commanded me. | 3e | 4B | 24 12 | |
| וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל נָֽסְע֛וּ מִבְּאֵרֹ֥ת בְּנֵי־יַעֲקָ֖ן מוֹסֵרָ֑ה שָׁ֣ם מֵ֤ת אַהֲרֹן֙ וַיִּקָּבֵ֣ר שָׁ֔ם וַיְכַהֵ֛ן אֶלְעָזָ֥ר בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו | 6 | And the children of Israel pulled out from Berot of the children of Yaaqan to Mosera. There Aaron died and was entombed there. Eleazar his son served as priest in his stead. | 3d | 4C | 17 20 | |
| מִשָּׁ֥ם נָסְע֖וּ הַגֻּדְגֹּ֑דָה וּמִן־הַגֻּדְגֹּ֣דָה יָטְבָ֔תָה אֶ֖רֶץ נַ֥חֲלֵי מָֽיִם | 7 | From there they pulled out towards Gudgod, and from Gudgod toward a merry land of torrents of water. | 3e | 4B | 8 16 | |
| בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗וא הִבְדִּ֤יל יְהוָה֙ אֶת־שֵׁ֣בֶט הַלֵּוִ֔י לָשֵׂ֖את אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן בְּרִית־יְהוָ֑ה לַעֲמֹד֩ לִפְנֵ֨י יְהוָ֤ה לְשָֽׁרְתוֹ֙ וּלְבָרֵ֣ךְ בִּשְׁמ֔וֹ עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה | 8 | At that time Yahweh differentiated the sceptre of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, to stand before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless in his name to this day. | 3e | 4C | 23 20 | |
| עַל־כֵּ֞ן לֹֽא־הָיָ֧ה לְלֵוִ֛י חֵ֥לֶק וְנַחֲלָ֖ה עִם־אֶחָ֑יו יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא נַחֲלָת֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לֽוֹ | 9 | So Levi has no share or inheritance with his kin. Yahweh, he is his inheritance, as Yahweh your God spoke to him. | 3c | 4B | 16 19 | |
| וְאָנֹכִ֞י עָמַ֣דְתִּי בָהָ֗ר כַּיָּמִים֙ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָ֑יְלָה וַיִּשְׁמַ֨ע יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י גַּ֚ם בַּפַּ֣עַם הַהִ֔וא לֹא־אָבָ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה הַשְׁחִיתֶֽךָ | 10 | And I stood on the hill, as in the former days, a forty day and forty night span, and Yahweh heard me also in that pulse. Yahweh consented not to destroy you. | 3e | 4C | 26 21 | |
| וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֵלַ֔י ק֛וּם לֵ֥ךְ לְמַסַּ֖ע לִפְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וְיָבֹ֙אוּ֙ וְיִֽרְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֥עְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָ֖ם לָתֵ֥ת לָהֶֽם | 11 | And Yahweh said to me, Arise. Go. Pull out before the people, and they will come, and they will possess the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. | 3d | 4C | 16 23 | |
| וְעַתָּה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מָ֚ה יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ שֹׁאֵ֖ל מֵעִמָּ֑ךְ כִּ֣י אִם־לְ֠יִרְאָה אֶת־יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ לָלֶ֤כֶת בְּכָל־דְּרָכָיו֙ וּלְאַהֲבָ֣ה אֹת֔וֹ וְלַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּכָל־לְבָבְךָ֖ וּבְכָל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ | 12 | And now, Israel, what is Yahweh your God asking from you, but to fear Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your being. | 3e | 4C | 18 47 | |
| לִשְׁמֹ֞ר אֶת־מִצְוֺ֤ת יְהוָה֙ וְאֶת־חֻקֹּתָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּ֑וֹם לְט֖וֹב לָֽךְ | 13 | To keep the commandments of Yahweh and his statutes which I am commanding you today, for your good. | 3d | 4C | 22 3 | |
| הֵ֚ן לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּשְׁמֵ֣י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם הָאָ֖רֶץ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּֽהּ | 14 | C | Lo, of Yahweh your God, are the heavens and the heaven of the heavens, the earth and all that is in her. | 3e | 4C | 16 8 |
| רַ֧ק בַּאֲבֹתֶ֛יךָ חָשַׁ֥ק יְהוָ֖ה לְאַהֲבָ֣ה אוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּבְחַ֞ר בְּזַרְעָ֣ם אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם בָּכֶ֛ם מִכָּל־הָעַמִּ֖ים כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּה | 15 | c | But in your ancestors Yahweh attached himself to love them, and he chose in their seed after them, among you from all the peoples as on this day. | 3c | 4B | 16 21 |
| וּמַלְתֶּ֕ם אֵ֖ת עָרְלַ֣ת לְבַבְכֶ֑ם וְעָ֨רְפְּכֶ֔ם לֹ֥א תַקְשׁ֖וּ עֽוֹד | 16 | So circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and your scruff, do not harden further. | 3e | 4B | 9 8 | |

| עֹשֶׂ֛ה מִשְׁפַּ֥ט יָת֖וֹם וְאַלְמָנָ֑ה וְאֹהֵ֣ב גֵּ֔ר לָ֥תֶת ל֖וֹ לֶ֥חֶם וְשִׂמְלָֽה | 18 | Doing judgment for orphan and widow, and loving a guest, to permit for him bread and shawl. | 3d | 4B | 10 12 | |
| וַאֲהַבְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הַגֵּ֑ר כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם | 19 | And you love the guest, for guests you were in the land of Egypt. | 3e | 4A | 7 11 | |
Him you will serve. And in him you will cleave, and in his name, make your oath. | 3c | 4B | 14 11 | |
| ה֥וּא תְהִלָּתְךָ֖ וְה֣וּא אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֣ה אִתְּךָ֗ אֶת־הַגְּדֹלֹ֤ת וְאֶת־הַנּֽוֹרָאֹת֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָא֖וּ עֵינֶֽיךָ | 21 | f | He is your praise, and he your God, who has undertaken with you the great and the fearful, these that your eyes saw. | 3e | 4C | 11 26 |
| בְּשִׁבְעִ֣ים נֶ֔פֶשׁ יָרְד֥וּ אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ מִצְרָ֑יְמָהּ וְעַתָּ֗ה שָֽׂמְךָ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ כְּכוֹכְבֵ֥י הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם לָרֹֽב | 22 | Of seventy, a group, your ancestors went down toward Egypt, and now Yahweh your God has set you as the stars of the heavens for multitude. | 3e | 4B | 14 19 |
