Jonah and Jesus, Jonah and Moses

I was not pleased that I elected to take a few days off from the psalms, but I did. And I have been rewarded by the delightful pdf by Duane Christensen, Reading Jonah in Hebrew. Surely I am ready for it and I was prepared for this moment. I have proven even at age 66 that the inductive method of learning a language works. I started learning Hebrew 5 years ago this summer - the proof of my searching and stumbling about is evident from my old blogs linked from the sidebar.

I did not point out how the movements of the king of Nineveh in chapter 3 are reflected in the life of Jesus and his movements as recorded in the foot-washing of John 13 (but I expect it will be obvious from my translation).
and the word touched the king of Nineveh
and he rose from his throne
and put aside his majesty from him
and covered in sackcloth
and sat on an ash-heap
Jonah is like Jesus in so many ways. The resonances are evident in a close reading for one who has the NT at heart. Equally, Duane points out that Jonah is midrash on Deuteronomy 10:11-12. So we have in Jonah a sign joining the NT to TNK. Do note that the whole is a chiasm: TNKNT in English and that the Writings are central. The centre is always the important bit.  But equally, the frames are changed in their meaning when they are read as framing the central section.

There should be no conflict between Torah and New Testament when they are read in the context of the work to be done by us in the Spirit of the Anointed in our lives as described in the keys to Torah that are in the Writings. Jonah too is us. And we are furious - or haven't you noticed?

Jonah chapter 4

I have made some adjustments to chapter 1 - notably - ascend cannot stand as a gloss since the morning coming up in 4:7 is a frame for the whole story. So also is child.  I just discovered this pdf - looks lovely. Brilliant in fact - and exactly the kind of transparency I have been searching for in my own work.

There is no doubt to me that this is a fable. But it is a terribly serious fable. And any child over the age of two would understand the petulance of this chapter. Any child over 20 would likewise understand the clever self-justification as well.

Nineveh changed on a dime. We are left wondering about Jonah.

StoryVsStory
4.1and this was evil for Jonah
great evil
and he was furious
4.2and he prayed to יְהוָה and said
I beseech you יְהוָה
was this not my word
even in my own humanity about what would happen?
therefore I stalled
and ran away to Tarshish
for I told you that you are a gracious and compassionate God
slow to anger and of much kindness
and who sighs over evil
4.3and now יְהוָה take please my being from me
for death is good compared with my life ס

4.4and יְהוָה said
is it good for you to be furious?
4.5and Jonah went out from the city
and he sat east of the city
and he made a shelter for himself there
and he sat under it in the shade
to see what would happen in the city

God appointed a tender plant
and made it come up over Jonah
to become shade over his head
to deliver him from his evil
and Jonah was glad for the tender plant
he was very glad
4.7and God appointed a worm
as the dawn came up in the morning
and it struck the tender plant and it dried up
4.8and it happened when the sun shone
and God appointed a sultry east wind
and the sun struck Jonah's head
and he fainted
and he wished his being to die
and he said
death is good compared with my life

4.9and God said to Jonah
is it good for you to be furious over the tender plant?
and he said
it is good for me to be furious
even to death

4.10and יְהוָה said
you yourself showed pity for the tender plant
that you did not toil for
and did not make grow
that happened as a child of the night
and as a child of the night perished
4.11and I, will I not show pity to Nineveh
the great city?
for there are in her more than 12 ten-thousands of humans
who cannot tell their right hand from their left
and also many cattle ש

Jonah chapter 3

Jonah only gets part way into Nineveh, the great city that belongs to God. One day in was enough. (Also compare psalm 34 and the frame of 'taste / madness'.)

StoryVsStory
וַיְהִי דְבַר יְהוָה אֶל יוֹנָה שֵׁנִית לֵאמֹר3.1and the word of יְהוָה happened to Jonah again saying
3.2Rise, walk to Nineveh the great city
and call out to her the call
that I was speaking to you
3.3and Jonah rose and walked to Nineveh
according to the word of יְהוָה
Now Nineveh happened to be a great city belonging to God
a walk of three days
3.4and Jonah let himself come into the city
one day's walk
and he called out and he said
yet forty days
and Nineveh will be changed

3.5and the mortals of Nineveh believed in God
and they called out for a fast
and they put on sackcloth
from the greatest of them and to the least of them
3.6and the word touched the king of Nineveh
and he rose from his throne
and put aside his majesty from him
and covered in sackcloth
and sat on an ash-heap

3.7and he proclaimed and he said
in Nineveh from the taste of the king
and his great ones saying
the human and the animal
the herd and the flock
let none taste anything whatever
let none pasture
and water let none drink
3.8but let them them be covered in sackcloth
the human and the animal
and call out to God forcefully
and let each turn from its evil way
and from the violence that is in their palms

3.9who knows
this God may turn and sigh
and turn from his fierce anger
and we will not perish
3.10and this God saw their deeds
that they turned from their evil ways
and this God sighed over the evil
that he intended to do to them
and he did not do it

Jonah chapter 2

Jonah dies.

As with all psalms, there is a space where the poet realizes that things have changed. In this psalm there are two such gaps that move from death to life.

StoryVsStory
2.1And יְהוָה appointed a great fish
to swallow up Jonah
and it happened
Jonah was in the innards of the fish
three days and three nights
2.2and Jonah prayed to יְהוָה his God
from the innards of the fish

2.3and he said
I called out from my trouble to יְהוָה
and he answered me
from the belly of the grave I cried
you heard my voice

2.4and you cast me from the depth
into the heart of the seas
and torrent surrounded me
All your breakers and your waves
have passed over me
2.5and I, I said
I am driven out from before your eyes
surely I will again be attentive
in your holy temple

2.6they enveloped me
waters - ever - self

reed wrapped round my head
2.7of the roots of the hills
I descended
the earth with her bars about me forever
but you brought up my life from destruction
יְהוָה my God
2.8when I in myself was disabled
I remembered
and my prayer came to you
in your holy temple

2.9those who keep futile emptiness abandon their kindness

2.10so I in a voice of thanksgiving will offer you
what I have vowed to recompense
salvation ה
to יְהוָה belongs ס
to the fish
and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land פ

Other notes: Verse 2:4b is exactly psalm 42:8b. Verse 2:9 does not appear to participate in the recurrence pattern. It seems on my meagre inspection that there is a more dense recurrence pattern in prose than in poetry. The middle of verse 6 is what the keyword structure surrounds: abyss surrounding me, reed wrapped round my head. I used reed because it reminded me of the Exodus. Maybe that's too great a stretch.

[kindness - I had originally: covenant-merciful-kindness - too long]
