This is another experiment in SimHebrew.
The deficient Masoretic Hebrew spelling requires me to invent some refinement for words like mxvot, which have only a single vav. How many such exceptions are there?

Maker of all things, visible and invisible
In a recent post, I wrote,
I have seen many theories about the God of the Bible and I subscribe to none of the shortcuts. What is the path that is not a shortcut? What is it I really 'believe'?
Escher, a hyperbolic image Angels and Devils |
And Yahweh God fashioned from the ground every living thing of the field and all the fowl of the heavens and had them come to the earthling to see what it would call to it.This verse is the pattern of experimental science, observation and naming. We see how something actually works, and then we assign a tag to it.
And all that the earthling called it, the self that has life, that was its name.
We live in every day of Creation. The days are all contemporaneous with every generation. We are immersed in the great act of birth-giving. Just look at the birth imagery in the Psalms:
e.g. Psalm 90
from ere mountains were born or you birthed earth and worldand 96
and even from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
worship Yahweh in the honour of holinessand 97
let all the earth be brought to birth from his presence
his lightnings light the worldI really went to town on this in my book on the Psalms in a long section on Psalm 110:
the earth saw and was in birth
Ha! Who would dare anwer the Lord's question? This too is a day of his power. Given the nature of his rest, we live in the day in which the LORD God created the earth and heaven (Genesis 2:4). The womb of old time is the black hole of the cross where time is slowed to nil and transcendence radiates in all lives forward and backward, redeeming the time. So it is in the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world that our birth in the Spirit is grounded. So it could be said that the Lord both precedes and follows this oracle of David.
A Black Hole and its music,
making the invisible visible
The birth imagery continues in Psalm 114, revealing the ambiguous image of earth / land being birthed, particular (the land of Israel), and universal (the earth), and applicable to both individual and corporation, the emergence of holy and caring relationships throughout our offices and countries.
from the presence of the Lord let earth be brought to birthAnd the birth imagery does not end until the last verse of Psalm 150.
from the presence of the God of Jacob
All the breath-bearing praise Yah Hallelu Yahbreath-bearing, נשׁם (nshm), used of a woman in childbirth (also Psalm 18:16, at the breath of the wind of your nostrils).
It is most curious that birth, dance, and writhe are all the same stem חול in Hebrew. It is a difficult and time-consuming process. We the woman, are giving birth. There is no shortcut.
How should we behave toward what we are giving birth to?
The pervasive image of the invisible |
We should recognize our kin. We should love them as we love ourselves.
When the science of all life is done, and we recognize the commonality of our DNA, we, as the earthling in the garden, should name our kin and act with care towards them, whether they be human, or animal, or creepy-crawly, and I won't even draw the line at viruses, for we are learning their capabilities. Just look at the benefits of COVID-19: the reduction in pollution, and even preventing aggressive acts from rich, thoughtless, and grasping countries. May we recognize the tendency to evil that we must work against.
(Read Psalm 146, read any of the second parts of Paul's epistles, following therefore - such as Romans 12-16.)
Yes you can read these sorts of helps in Seeing the Psalter. [PDF copy to be available soon from selected distributors.] But hey, this is art, and music, and all the discipline required of these gifts, whether to write or read, or perform. There are no shortcuts.
Communion and physical presence
There's a good deal of talk (e.g. here and here and here) about the sacrament of the Eucharist and the problems of celebrating it virtually.
It's curious that when there were real priests, the example of the Passover is a family celebration and does not require a priest to consecrate anything. And the Passover is sacramental. It makes present a distant reality that is a prefiguring of the Eucharist. It is not about those people then, it is about those who celebrate it now.
In the New Testament, there are no priests in the sense of the Old Testament. And the Eucharist seems to require a 'priest' to consecrate the elements.

Is there not a precedent for consecration at a distance? We read about healing at a distance in the NT. Why would not the people isolating at home set aside bread and wine and as the service proceeds, let them be consecrated through the shared worship even if the worship is virtual and 'only' on TV? Why should the bread and wine set aside be any different from the servant who was ill and who was healed at a distance (without the benefit of TV or hocus-pocus)?
What is the Eucharist really doing? Why is consecration limited to the ordained or limited to physical presence?
It seems to me this could turn into something quite special. It has application to situations other than a pandemic. After all, do we not celebrate in the presence of the communion of saints? Many of them, having died, are not physically present to us.
The ordained, I am sure, will justify their canons with many words. But the Eucharist is not subject either to magic or to canon law.

The Hebrew Bible and Its Music - the distributors
Here's where you can get the volume(s) of The Hebrew Bible and Its Music.
The series is available on 7 additional distributors (links below) besides the publisher's website. Some of these sites mix me up with others of the same name! You can tell it's from me when you see the unique fractal I generated in 2013 for my first book. All 10 volumes have this brand on them.
Volumes 1 to 7 are the translation itself. There is an introduction specific to each volume. Volume 8, a complete concordance, and volume 9, an English alphabet book, expose all my translation decisions.
Volume 10 examines and explains the musical accents.
Depending on the retailer, updates are available free of charge to purchasers. Normally if you have purchased the ebook, you can go back and download again and get revisions. Kindle, which is the main one, doesn't notify of changes, but it works that way. You can find out about revisions by following this blog or my publisher's blog.
You can purchase all ten volumes for between $30 and $40 depending on the currency. Or you can get one volume at a time. Prices vary from $2.37 to $3.50 per volume.
Amazon, Kindle editions are noted here. If you have an account on Scribd, you can read them there (Volume 10 pending). Apple books has a compact list.
Booktopia is a nice looking place, but I won't be going to Australia any time soon even though I have a namesake there that some sellers think is also me.
And they are available at Barnes and Noble. Kobo lists them too. You can also read them on Google Play, if that is familiar territory. (The search does not work at all.)
All the distributors are listed on these individual pages. Each of these links is also on the publisher's series page.
1. The Torah
2. The Former Prophets
3. The Major Prophets
4. The Twelve
5. The Books of Truth
6. The Five Scrolls
7. The Remaining Writings
8. A Biblical Hebrew to English Concordance
9. A is for Abandon, An English to Biblical Hebrew Alphabet book
10. The Progression of the Music, The Accents of the Hebrew Bible

What's changed since yesterday? Italy has moved into 2nd place ahead of china and behind the USA. Netherlands has moved ahead of S. Korea. Belgium has gained one place over Austria. Turkey has jumped up 3 places past Portugal Canada and Norway. Sweden has dropped back to 21st, off the chart, and Brazil (22nd yesterday) has taken 19th place from Sweden.
We are in the 31st Day of Lent. We are stuck for words, like the poet George Herbert as outlined in this apt series of posts from Jim Gordon.

I'm just having a little fun with the music of the accents to see if communication is possible without modern music notation. Solfege might provide something too - but more study needed for ornamentation in solfege.
Here is Psalm 18 again in SimHebrew with the English following and with the ta`amei ha-mikra (accents) below the text interpreted as reciting notes, c d e f g A B C and the ornaments as superscripts (see the table at the end of the post). I was lucky to have all the carriage returns in the Hebrew already so I had no programming to do to paragraph the major disjunctive accents.
If there is no specification of the first note, it defaults to e, where we would have ended up on the previous verse. For the SimHebrew spec see the prior post linked above.
Here is the mapping with the normal ascii characters substituting for the complex Unicode characters. I used v for revia and zaqef-qatan since they are both essentially mordents, a single note down and then return to the original note. 5 for the illuy (rare) is a fifth above the note as the same sign below the text is the fifth note of the scale.
