2 Kings 9

In case you were wondering about this chapter for some obscure reason, this is the story of the assassination of Jehoram, Ahaziah, and Jezebel. To complete the context, I suppose we should do chapter 8 and 10 as well.

This is definitely a period of complete social breakdown in Israel and Judah, a bit of history not to be imitated or celebrated or applied. The behaviour described here is not a prescription for anyone.

The music is derived from the accents in the Hebrew Bible. Introductions - letters, music, text and music, and terminology, are here. The text has been reviewed for errors against the Aleppo Codex.

The score is long so I have embedded it.

2 Kings 9: Syllables: 1473; Longest recitation: 26; Tenor: B 23.69%.

B as tenor is the main recitation note for story-telling and political reporting. This includes the sense of announcement, proclamation, etc, and it is the first natural harmonic of the Shofar above its tonic e. The book of Kings is one of the '21' prose books, so all of the bicola are 1-4-1 or bi-colon-A.

I have divided this passage into sections. Two of the sections reduce the recitation tenor to e. For posts comparing poetry and prose, see the series on poetry. The harmonic direction in these verses is always 1-4-1. There are other pauses, particularly consistent with zaqef-qaton - which most of the time the software marks a breath, but there is no other cadence in the inner verse other than the cadence on the subdominant (4) and the final on the tonic (1). Taking the verse by verse analysis as read, I will see if I can point out a few features.
and take the vial

In prose, watch for the use of accents that highlight a word or several words in the passage. For instance, the telisha gedolah on and take in bar 5. How often does this ornament occur and in what context? Is it word painting or conceptual linkage? The next occurrence is in bar 12, verse 2. Verses 2 and 3 tell hnyr hnbia, the lad, the prophet, what to do. And verse 4 tells us that he went as he was directed.

Telisha-gedola occurs a little over 1100 times in the 21 books, 74 times in 2 Kings, and 4 of them are in this chapter. So if we were studying all the music, we would see this accent relatively frequently. For the remaining two in this chapter, see verse 21, bar 201 where the ornament identifies the king of Israel, and verse 27 bar 258 where Jehu commands the death of Ahaziah, king of Judah. The strange aspect of the kings of this time is that their anointing seems to lead first to murder. Another bit of history not to be imitated. The use of ornaments in the text needs some study. I don't think anyone, scholar or enthusiast, has done this to date with any clarity.

This music is not like the psalms. There I hope to stimulate the use of the music. Here we have another set of issues. The early and later prophets have songs and elegies to sing, but not in this chapter. Here we learn how early scribes annotated the text without words, recording the story with canonical commentary through the use of recitation and ornamentation.

Verse 5 is the only verse without an inner cadence. Such verses like this one move the action along. They are particularly poignant in the Song of Songs and Lamentations where they are effectively used though for very different reasons: in the Song for a sense of urgency, and in Lamentations, throughout the 66 verses of the middle chapter (with one exception), almost resignation to grief. I hope to get to these books again some day but in the meanwhile you can find the music here, the PDF for the Five Scrolls.

In this chapter, all verses begin on the tonic. There are a few verses in 2 Kings that begin with ornaments or with an accent under the text that overrides the default e, but not as many in this book than we have seen in the psalms. In the prose books, about 10% of the verses have a first note that is not the tonic. In the poetry books the number of verses with a first note that is not the tonic is 30%.

There are many other aspects of this recitation that are interesting, but they would take away from my work on the psalms. I will approach the prose later maybe. You might be interested in the ways in which the phrase 'Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel,' is set to the music. The exact setting in verse 6 recurs in other settings, and of course there are variations.
A typical introduction to prophetic speech

There are also ornaments like the tarsin of verse 7 highlighting vengeance, and in later verses the telisha qetana highlighting asides. There are common combinations like the double qadma, and rarer ones like the tsinnor segol sequence. Because of its sheer volume, I will need a variety of  approaches to musical phrases in the prose. I think we can note for now that the ornaments have the capacity to make musical comments on the text. These are untranslatable to our bias towards visual abstraction and power. We love vengeance for all the wrong reasons. The high C is a note of grief, not of approval. I repeat the concern from the Mishnah (b. Megilla 32a, on Ezekiel 20 verse 25 that if we hear the text without a melody, i.e. the tone of voice, we are likely to hear it wrong and get given (divine passive), or give ourselves "statutes that are not good and judgments that will not live in us".

So please do not read to your destruction or to anyone else's.
