1 Kings 18

I have used surface of and face of about an equal number of times where I could have used just one of them. In the cases I see, the object of the construct is either ground or earth / land. Should I force consistency? You see, even with an automated pattern recognition algorithm, one little slip can produce inconsistency. Porridge is boring without a little bump or two in it, but if someone were to build an anthropology or worse a theology on the randomness of my translation (as people have with the KJV), ... O dear. What is my response? Which should I use? Sometimes I needed surface in other contexts, but the ground, the earth, the land does have a face, does it not?

It's only a matter of 20 or so changes either way. What should I choose? In all contexts, face is used more than 637 times, surface 40 times. I think I will leave it as is for now. The rain on the face of the ground suggests more relief than just surface, as indeed is true, because just as relief penetrates the whole body, so does water on the face of the ground.

I have never seen used as turn with heart as its object. What does Elijah think God has done, is doing in verse 37?

1 And it was many days, and the word of Yahweh happened to Elijah in the third year, saying,
Go. Show yourself to Ahab, and I will give rain on the face of the ground.

2 And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab.
And the famine resolutely held Samaria.

3 And Ahab called to Obadiah, who was over the house.
(And Obadiah was very fearful of Yahweh.

5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go into the land, to all the springs of water, and to the wadis.
Perhaps we may find grass, that we may keep horse and mule alive, and not cut off the beasts.

16 And Obadiah went to encounter Ahab, and made it clear to him.
And Ahab went to encounter Elijah.

18 But he said, I have not agitated Israel. In contrast, you and your father's house,
have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and have gone after the Baalim.

19 So now send and collect for me all Israel to mount Carmel,
and the prophets of Baal, four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the fetish, four hundred, who eat at the table of Jezebel.
3c 4C 19
34

20 And Ahab sent to all the children of Israel,
and he collected the prophets to mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah made overture to all people, and he said, How long will you be lame concerning both schisms? If Yahweh is God, go after him, but if Baal, go after him.
And the people did not answer him a word.
3d 4C 49
9

But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty persons.

23 So let them give to us two young bulls, and let them choose for themselves one young bull, and cut it in pieces, and set it on the wood, and no fire will be set.
And myself, I will do the other young bull that I will position on the wood, and I will set no fire.
3e 4B 37

24 And you will call in the name of your God, but I, I will call in the name of Yahweh, and it will be the God that answers with fire, he is the God.
And all the people answered and they said, The thing is good.
3c 4B 37
13

25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose for yourselves one young bull to do first, for you are many.
And call in the name of your God, and set no fire.
3e 4C 35
15

26 ~ And they took the young bull that was given to them, and they did, and they called in the name of Baal, from the morning and to the midday, saying, Baal, answer us. And there was no voice, and there was no answer.
And they limped on the altar that was made.

27 And it was at midday, and Elijah jested among them, and he said, Call with a great voice for he is God, for he is pondering, or he is overtaking for himself, or journeying for himself.
Perhaps he is asleep and must awaken.
3c 4C 39
8

28 And they called with a great voice and self-slashed according to their framework, with daggers and with lances,
until they shed their blood on themselves.
3e 4B 24
7

29 And it was when the midday was passed that they prophesied until the burnt offering of the gift,
and there was no voice, and there was no answer, and there was no one paying attention.
3e 4B 20
11

30 And Elijah said to all the people, Come close to me. And all the people came close to him.
And he healed the altar of Yahweh that had been overthrown.

11
31 And Elijah took twelve stones according to the count of the bands of the children of Jacob,
to whom happened the word of Yahweh, saying, Israel will be your name.
3e 4C 23
20

32 And he built with the stones an altar in the name of Yahweh.
And he made a conduit like a house of two bushels of seed, round about for the altar.

18

And in your word I have done all these things.

43 And he said to his lad, Go up, please. Take note by the way of the sea. And he went up, and he took note, and he said, There is nothing whatever.
And he said, Return seven times.

44 And it was on the seventh time that he said, Behold a thick cloud, tiny like someone's palm, is coming up from the sea.
And he said, Go up. Say to Ahab, Hitch the strap and come down, that the showers not detain you.
