2 Samuel 20

Another brutal chapter. You can clearly see the seeds of the divisions between north and south very early in the history. The capacity to overcome division is managed somewhat peaceably with minimal bloodshed, by the intervention of a shrewd woman who recognized the city as mother, and as the inheritance of Yahweh. I hate to think we must have such political shrewdness in the management of the fire we are now under. Off with his head, said the queen of hearts.

Note Abel is a different stem אבל from Abel, the person, הבל. The first is lament, the second futility (traditionally vanity, but that I have for שׁוא).

1 And there one could encounter a worthless person, and his name was Sheva, child of Bikri, a Jaminite.
And he sounded on the shophar, and he said, We have no share in David and no inheritance have we in the child of Jesse. Each to its tent, Israel.

2 And everyone of Israel went up from following David to follow Sheva, child of Bikri,
but those of Judah clung to their king from the Jordan and to Jerusalem.

3 And David came to his house in Jerusalem, and the king took ten women, courtesans that he had left to guard the house, and he gave them a house under guard, and had them nourished, but to them he did not come.
And they were troubled until the day of their death as living widows.

You take the servants of your master, and pursue after him, lest he find enclosed cities and be removed out of our sight.

And he died. And Joab and Abishai, his brother, pursued after Sheva, child of Bikri.
