Nehemiah 9

Interesting unique word in verse 19, בהדרך. The form is contrary to the grammars which say that prefixed בח should elide to ב. It surprises me still how often the Hebrew word order can be maintained in English without awkwardness. I try to maintain the Hebrew word order so that the reading can be used for the underlay of the music.

Another common use of ב is with (v 1), against, to (v 10), but its most common use is in (v 1). Sometimes we need in when it is not there (v 12). Sometimes I render it as given in its common form (v 26) even if an alternative might be less awkward. Sometimes it needs no translation because the Hebrew verb is used commonly with ב following and in English we would not need the preposition (v 7). Because I don't want to enable speed reading. I would rather force a halt so that I rethink and rephrase and ponder and consider.

Verse 29 אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אָדָ֖ם וְחָיָ֣ה בָהֶ֑ם is very close, probably derived perhaps through Ezekiel (20.11, 13, 21, 37.3) from Leviticus 18.5 יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אֹתָ֛ם הָאָדָ֖ם וָחַ֣י בָּהֶ֑ם.

This is a prayer in the form of a creed, rehearsing the corporate history, and declaring self guilty in all respects.

וְרוּחֲךָ֨ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה נָתַ֖תָּ לְהַשְׂכִּילָ֑ם וּמַנְךָ֙ לֹא־מָנַ֣עְתָּ מִפִּיהֶ֔ם וּמַ֛יִם נָתַ֥תָּה לָהֶ֖ם לִצְמָאָֽם	20		And your good spirit you gave to give them insight, and your manna you did not withhold from their mouth, and water you gave for them for their thirst.	3d	4B	14 19
וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֛ה כִּלְכַּלְתָּ֥ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר לֹ֣א חָסֵ֑רוּ שַׂלְמֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ לֹ֣א בָל֔וּ וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א בָצֵֽקוּ	21		And forty years you nourished them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their apparel not did wear out, and their feet did not blister.	3d	4B	16 15
וַתִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֤ם מַמְלָכוֹת֙ וַעֲמָמִ֔ים וַֽתַּחְלְקֵ֖ם לְפֵאָ֑ה וַיִּֽירְשׁ֞וּ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ סִיח֗וֹן וְאֶת־אֶ֙רֶץ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן וְאֶת־אֶ֖רֶץ ע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָֽׁן	22		And you gave them kingdoms, and peoples, and divisions into quarters, and they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og, king of Bashan.	3e	4C	19 26
וּבְנֵיהֶ֣ם הִרְבִּ֔יתָ כְּכֹכְבֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַתְּבִיאֵם֙ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥רְתָּ לַאֲבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם לָב֥וֹא לָרָֽשֶׁת	23		And their children you have increased as the stars of the heavens, and you brought them to the land which you had promised to their ancestors to enter to possess.	3e	4B	13 22

וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ עָרִ֣ים בְּצֻרוֹת֮ וַאֲדָמָ֣ה שְׁמֵנָה֒ וַיִּֽירְשׁ֡וּ בָּתִּ֣ים מְלֵֽאִים־כָּל־ט֠וּב בֹּר֨וֹת חֲצוּבִ֜ים כְּרָמִ֧ים וְזֵיתִ֛ים וְעֵ֥ץ מַאֲכָ֖ל לָרֹ֑ב וַיֹּאכְל֤וּ וַֽיִּשְׂבְּעוּ֙ וַיַּשְׁמִ֔ינוּ וַיִּֽתְעַדְּנ֖וּ בְּטוּבְךָ֥ הַגָּדֽוֹל	25		And they conquered enclosed cities and a stout ground, and they possessed houses full of all good, hewn cisterns, vineyards and olive trees, and trees for food in abundance, and they ate and were sated, and became stout, and enthralled themselves in great goodness.	3c	4C	44 21
וַיַּמְר֨וּ וַֽיִּמְרְד֜וּ בָּ֗ךְ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤כוּ אֶת־תּוֹרָֽתְךָ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י גַוָּ֔ם וְאֶת־נְבִיאֶ֣יךָ הָרָ֔גוּ אֲשֶׁר־הֵעִ֥ידוּ בָ֖ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֵלֶ֑יךָ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ נֶאָצ֖וֹת גְּדוֹלֹֽת	26		And they were provocative, and they mutinied in you, and they flung your instruction behind their backs, and your prophets they slew, who witnessed in them to return them to you, and they undertook great blasphemies.	3e	4C	43 10
וַֽתִּתְּנֵם֙ בְּיַ֣ד צָֽרֵיהֶ֔ם וַיָּצֵ֖רוּ לָהֶ֑ם וּבְעֵ֤ת צָֽרָתָם֙ יִצְעֲק֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּה֙ מִשָּׁמַ֣יִם תִּשְׁמָ֔ע וּֽכְרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ הָֽרַבִּ֗ים תִּתֵּ֤ן לָהֶם֙ מֽוֹשִׁיעִ֔ים וְיוֹשִׁיע֖וּם מִיַּ֥ד צָרֵיהֶֽם	27		And you gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they were trouble to them, and in the time of their trouble, they cried out to you, and from the heavens you yourself heard, and according to your many compassions, you gave them saviours, and they saved them from the hand of their adversaries.	3e	4C	14 43
וּכְנ֣וֹחַ לָהֶ֔ם יָשׁ֕וּבוּ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רַ֖ע לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַתַּֽעַזְבֵ֞ם בְּיַ֤ד אֹֽיְבֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּרְדּ֣וּ בָהֶ֔ם וַיָּשׁ֙וּבוּ֙ וַיִּזְעָק֔וּךָ וְאַתָּ֞ה מִשָּׁמַ֧יִם תִּשְׁמַ֛ע וְתַצִּילֵ֥ם כְּֽרַחֲמֶ֖יךָ רַבּ֥וֹת עִתִּֽים	28		But as they had rest, they returned to do evil before you, and you forsook them into the hand of their enemies, and they ruled them, and they returned, and they appealed, and from the heavens you yourself heard, and you delivered, according to your compassions, many times.	3c	4C	16 44
וַתָּ֨עַד בָּהֶ֜ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֶל־תּוֹרָתֶ֗ךָ וְהֵ֨מָּה הֵזִ֜ידוּ וְלֹא־שָׁמְע֤וּ לְמִצְוֺתֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְמִשְׁפָּטֶ֣יךָ חָֽטְאוּ־בָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אָדָ֖ם וְחָיָ֣ה בָהֶ֑ם וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ כָתֵף֙ סוֹרֶ֔רֶת וְעָרְפָּ֥ם הִקְשׁ֖וּ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמֵֽעוּ	29		And you testified against them to return them to your instruction, but they acted presumptuously and they did not hear your commandments, but they sinned against your judgments, (that a human does so he will live in them), and they put forth a shoulder, turned aside, and their scruff they hardened, and they did not hear.	3e	4C	49 18
וַתִּמְשֹׁ֤ךְ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ שָׁנִ֣ים רַבּ֔וֹת וַתָּ֨עַד בָּ֧ם בְּרוּחֲךָ֛ בְּיַד־נְבִיאֶ֖יךָ וְלֹ֣א הֶאֱזִ֑ינוּ וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד עַמֵּ֥י הָאֲרָצֹֽת	30		And you drew them out many years and your spirit testified in them by the hand of your prophets, but they did not give ear. וּֽבְרַחֲמֶ֧יךָ הָרַבִּ֛ים לֹֽא־עֲשִׂיתָ֥ם כָּלָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א עֲזַבְתָּ֑ם כִּ֛י אֵֽל־חַנּ֥וּן וְרַח֖וּם אָֽתָּה	31		But in your many compassions, you did not undertake to consume them, and you did not forsake them, for you are a God gracious and compassionate.	3c	4B	18 9

וְאַתָּ֣ה צַדִּ֔יק עַ֖ל כָּל־הַבָּ֣א עָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־אֱמֶ֥ת עָשִׂ֖יתָ וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ	33		And you are a righteous one in all that has come over us, because truth you have done, and ourselves, we are wicked.	3e	4B	12 12
וְאֶת־מְלָכֵ֤ינוּ שָׂרֵ֙ינוּ֙ כֹּהֲנֵ֣ינוּ וַאֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ לֹ֥א עָשׂ֖וּ תּוֹרָתֶ֑ךָ וְלֹ֤א הִקְשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ אֶל־מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ וּלְעֵ֣דְוֺתֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַעִידֹ֖תָ בָּהֶֽם	34		And our kings, our chiefs, our priests, and our ancestors, they did not do your instruction, and they did not attend to your commandments, and your testimonies with which you testified against them.	3e	4C	25 23
וְהֵ֣ם בְּמַלְכוּתָם֩ וּבְטוּבְךָ֨ הָרָ֜ב אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּ לָהֶ֗ם וּבְאֶ֨רֶץ הָרְחָבָ֧ה וְהַשְּׁמֵנָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּ לִפְנֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֣א עֲבָד֑וּךָ וְֽלֹא־שָׁ֔בוּ מִמַּֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעִֽים	35		And they in their kingdoms, and in your abundant good that you gave to them, and in the land, broad and stout, that you gave before them, they did not serve you, and they did not turn from their practices of evil.	3c	4B	41 11
הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ הַיּ֖וֹם עֲבָדִ֑ים וְהָאָ֜רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּה לַאֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת־פִּרְיָהּ֙ וְאֶת־טוּבָ֔הּ הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ עֲבָדִ֖ים עָלֶֽיהָ	36		Behold, we are today servants, and the land that you gave to our ancestors, to eat its fruit, and its good, behold, we are servants on it.	3d	4C	10 35
וּתְבוּאָתָ֣הּ מַרְבָּ֗ה לַמְּלָכִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּה עָלֵ֖ינוּ בְּחַטֹּאותֵ֑ינוּ וְעַ֣ל גְּ֠וִיֹּתֵינוּ מֹשְׁלִ֤ים וּבִבְהֶמְתֵּ֙נוּ֙ כִּרְצוֹנָ֔ם וּבְצָרָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֲנָֽחְנוּ	37		And its income is increased, to the kings that you gave over us in our sins, and over our bodies they govern, and with our cattle at their bidding, and in great straits we are.	3d	4C	22 26
