Exodus 38

This is familiar ground. I almost wonder if I had done it before. One word that had never been translated to date was vav, hook, one of the very few Hebrew words that begins with ו vav, itself a hook. I know I had reserved this gloss.

But where else are these words? They are in the specifications for the building in earlier chapters of Exodus. We had not yet read the chapters the hook first occurs in. This chapter itself is also highly repetitive with the mineral surface, brass, silver, often occurring on the last note of a phrase, e.g. verse 10 beginning at bar 76. Consider also the long recitation of verse 17, beginning in bar 128. Music would perform this with love. The temples and tabernacles are all a testimony to love, the joy of the one anticipating the presence of the other.

וַיַּ֜עַשׂ אֶֽת־כָּל־כְּלֵ֣י הַמִּזְבֵּ֗חַ אֶת־הַסִּירֹ֤ת וְאֶת־הַיָּעִים֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּזְרָקֹ֔ת אֶת־הַמִּזְלָגֹ֖ת וְאֶת־הַמַּחְתֹּ֑ת כָּל־כֵּלָ֖יו עָשָׂ֥ה נְחֹֽשֶׁת	3		And he constructed all the vessels of the altar, the pots and the shovels, and the bowls, the forks and the censers. וַיַּ֤עַשׂ לַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ מִכְבָּ֔ר מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה רֶ֣שֶׁת נְחֹ֑שֶׁת תַּ֧חַת כַּרְכֻּבּ֛וֹ מִלְּמַ֖טָּה עַד־חֶצְיֽוֹ	4		And he made for the altar a grate, a net interleaved of brass, under its shelf downward to its half.	3c	4C	17 11
וַיִּצֹ֞ק אַרְבַּ֧ע טַבָּעֹ֛ת בְּאַרְבַּ֥ע הַקְּצָוֺ֖ת לְמִכְבַּ֣ר הַנְּחֹ֑שֶׁת בָּתִּ֖ים לַבַּדִּֽים	5		And he molded four rings in the four extremities for the grate of brass, housings for the shafts.	3c	4B	20 5

וַיָּבֵ֨א אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֜ים בַּטַּבָּעֹ֗ת עַ֚ל צַלְעֹ֣ת הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ לָשֵׂ֥את אֹת֖וֹ בָּהֶ֑ם נְב֥וּב לֻחֹ֖ת עָשָׂ֥ה אֹתֽוֹ	7		And he made the shafts come into the rings on the ribs of the altar to bear it with them. He made it with hollow boards.	3e	4C	24 8
וַיַּ֗עַשׂ אֵ֚ת הַכִּיּ֣וֹר נְחֹ֔שֶׁת וְאֵ֖ת כַּנּ֣וֹ נְחֹ֑שֶׁת בְּמַרְאֹת֙ הַצֹּ֣בְאֹ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר צָֽבְא֔וּ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד	8		And he constructed the brass laver and its base of brass, with the mirrors of the hosts that hosted the door of the tent of engagement.	3e	4C	17 16
וַיַּ֖עַשׂ אֶת־הֶחָצֵ֑ר לִפְאַ֣ת ׀ נֶ֣גֶב תֵּימָ֗נָה קַלְעֵ֤י הֶֽחָצֵר֙ שֵׁ֣שׁ מָשְׁזָ֔ר מֵאָ֖ה בָּאַמָּֽה	9		And he constructed the court, for the south quarter, the right side, the hangings of the court, fine twined linen, a hundred cubits.	3e	4C	7 20

וְלִפְאַת־יָ֗ם קְלָעִים֙ חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים בָּֽאַמָּ֔ה עַמּוּדֵיהֶ֥ם עֲשָׂרָ֔ה וְאַדְנֵיהֶ֖ם עֲשָׂרָ֑ה וָוֵ֧י הָעַמֻּדִ֛ים וַחֲשׁוּקֵיהֶ֖ם כָּֽסֶף	12		And for the seaward quarter, the hangings, fifty cubits, their pillars eleven, and their sockets, eleven. וְלִפְאַ֛ת קֵ֥דְמָה מִזְרָ֖חָה חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אַמָּֽה	13		And for the eastward quarter toward the sunrise, fifty cubits.	3d	3g	13
קְלָעִ֛ים חֲמֵשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה אַמָּ֖ה אֶל־הַכָּתֵ֑ף עַמּוּדֵיהֶ֣ם שְׁלֹשָׁ֔ה וְאַדְנֵיהֶ֖ם שְׁלֹשָֽׁה	14		The hangings, fifteen cubits to the shoulder, their pillars, three, and their sockets, three.	3d	4B	13 14
וְלַכָּתֵ֣ף הַשֵּׁנִ֗ית מִזֶּ֤ה וּמִזֶּה֙ לְשַׁ֣עַר הֶֽחָצֵ֔ר קְלָעִ֕ים חֲמֵ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה אַמָּ֑ה עַמֻּדֵיהֶ֣ם שְׁלֹשָׁ֔ה וְאַדְנֵיהֶ֖ם שְׁלֹשָֽׁה	15		And for the second shoulder, from this or from that, for the gate of the court, the hangings, fifteen cubits, their pillars, three, and their sockets, three.	3e	4C	27 14
כָּל־קַלְעֵ֧י הֶחָצֵ֛ר סָבִ֖יב שֵׁ֥שׁ מָשְׁזָֽר	16		All the hangings of the surrounding court, fine twined linen.	3c	3g	11
וְהָאֲדָנִ֣ים לָֽעַמֻּדִים֮ נְחֹשֶׁת֒ וָוֵ֨י הָֽעַמּוּדִ֜ים וַחֲשׁוּקֵיהֶם֙ כֶּ֔סֶף וְצִפּ֥וּי רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם כָּ֑סֶף וְהֵם֙ מְחֻשָּׁקִ֣ים כֶּ֔סֶף כֹּ֖ל עַמֻּדֵ֥י הֶחָצֵֽר	17		And the sockets for the pillars, brass. וּמָסַ֞ךְ שַׁ֤עַר הֶחָצֵר֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה רֹקֵ֔ם תְּכֵ֧לֶת וְאַרְגָּמָ֛ן וְתוֹלַ֥עַת שָׁנִ֖י וְשֵׁ֣שׁ מָשְׁזָ֑ר וְעֶשְׂרִ֤ים אַמָּה֙ אֹ֔רֶךְ וְקוֹמָ֤ה בְרֹ֙חַב֙ חָמֵ֣שׁ אַמּ֔וֹת לְעֻמַּ֖ת קַלְעֵ֥י הֶחָצֵֽר	18		And the portiere of the gate of the court, he interleaved with embroidery, amethyst and purple and crimson scarlet, and fine twined linen, and twenty cubits, the length of and the height in the breadth, five cubits set against the hangings of the court.	3c	4C	30 25
וְעַמֻּֽדֵיהֶם֙ אַרְבָּעָ֔ה וְאַדְנֵיהֶ֥ם אַרְבָּעָ֖ה נְחֹ֑שֶׁת וָוֵיהֶ֣ם כֶּ֔סֶף וְצִפּ֧וּי רָאשֵׁיהֶ֛ם וַחֲשֻׁקֵיהֶ֖ם כָּֽסֶף	19		And their pillars were four, and their sockets four, brass. Their hooks, silver, and the overlaying of their tops and their attachments, silver.	3c	4B	18 18
וְֽכָל־הַיְתֵדֹ֞ת לַמִּשְׁכָּ֧ן וְלֶחָצֵ֛ר סָבִ֖יב נְחֹֽשֶׁת	20		And all the pegs for the dwelling and for the court surrounding, brass.	3c	3g	17
אֵ֣לֶּה פְקוּדֵ֤י הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן הָעֵדֻ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר פֻּקַּ֖ד עַל־פִּ֣י מֹשֶׁ֑ה עֲבֹדַת֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם בְּיַד֙ אִֽיתָמָ֔ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּהֵֽן	21	B	These are the offices of the dwelling, the dwelling-place of the testimony, that is the office over the mandate of Moses, the service of the Levites by the hand of Ithamar child of Aaron the priest.	3e	4C	21 18
וּבְצַלְאֵ֛ל בֶּן־אוּרִ֥י בֶן־ח֖וּר לְמַטֵּ֣ה יְהוּדָ֑ה עָשָׂ֕ה אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה	22		And Betsalel, child of My Light, child of Hur, of the branch of Judah, made all that Yahweh commanded Moses.	3d	4B	14 13

כָּל־הַזָּהָ֗ב הֶֽעָשׂוּי֙ לַמְּלָאכָ֔ה בְּכֹ֖ל מְלֶ֣אכֶת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ זְהַ֣ב הַתְּנוּפָ֗ה תֵּ֤שַׁע וְעֶשְׂרִים֙ כִּכָּ֔ר וּשְׁבַ֨ע מֵא֧וֹת וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים שֶׁ֖קֶל בְּשֶׁ֥קֶל הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ	24		All the gold for what was made by workmanship in all the lines of work of the sanctuary, and the gold of the wave offering, was twenty nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary.	3c	4C	18 29
וְכֶ֛סֶף פְּקוּדֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה מְאַ֣ת כִּכָּ֑ר וְאֶלֶף֩ וּשְׁבַ֨ע מֵא֜וֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁ֧ה וְשִׁבְעִ֛ים שֶׁ֖קֶל בְּשֶׁ֥קֶל הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ	25		And the silver of the conscripts of the assembly, a hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and seventy five shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary.	3c	4B	13 22
בֶּ֚קַע לַגֻּלְגֹּ֔לֶת מַחֲצִ֥ית הַשֶּׁ֖קֶל בְּשֶׁ֣קֶל הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ לְכֹ֨ל הָעֹבֵ֜ר עַל־הַפְּקֻדִ֗ים מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה לְשֵׁשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֙לֶף֙ וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֔ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים	26	C	One bekah per individual, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary, all subject to the conscription, from twenty years and upward, for six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.	3e	4C	18 39
וַיְהִ֗י מְאַת֙ כִּכַּ֣ר הַכֶּ֔סֶף לָצֶ֗קֶת אֵ֚ת אַדְנֵ֣י הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ וְאֵ֖ת אַדְנֵ֣י הַפָּרֹ֑כֶת מְאַ֧ת אֲדָנִ֛ים לִמְאַ֥ת הַכִּכָּ֖ר כִּכָּ֥ר לָאָֽדֶן	27		And the hundred talents of silver were molded for the sockets of the sanctuary and the sockets of the veil, one hundred sockets with the hundred talents, a talent per socket.	3c	4C	26 15
וְאֶת־הָאֶ֜לֶף וּשְׁבַ֤ע הַמֵּאוֹת֙ וַחֲמִשָּׁ֣ה וְשִׁבְעִ֔ים עָשָׂ֥ה וָוִ֖ים לָעַמּוּדִ֑ים וְצִפָּ֥ה רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם וְחִשַּׁ֥ק אֹתָֽם	28		And the thousand seven hundred and seventy five, he made hooks for the pillars, and he overlaid their tops and attached them.	3e	4C	25 11
וּנְחֹ֥שֶׁת הַתְּנוּפָ֖ה שִׁבְעִ֣ים כִּכָּ֑ר וְאַלְפַּ֥יִם וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֖וֹת שָֽׁקֶל	29		And the brass of the wave offering, seventy talents, and two thousand four hundred shekels.	3e	4B	10 10
וַיַּ֣עַשׂ בָּ֗הּ אֶת־אַדְנֵי֙ פֶּ֚תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַנְּחֹ֔שֶׁת וְאֶת־מִכְבַּ֥ר הַנְּחֹ֖שֶׁת אֲשֶׁר־ל֑וֹ וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־כְּלֵ֥י הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ	30		And he constructed with it the sockets of the door of the tent of engagement and the altar of brass and the grate of brass for it, and all the vessels of the altar.	3e	4C	30 9
וְאֶת־אַדְנֵ֤י הֶֽחָצֵר֙ סָבִ֔יב וְאֶת־אַדְנֵ֖י שַׁ֣עַר הֶחָצֵ֑ר וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־יִתְדֹ֧ת הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ן וְאֶת־כָּל־יִתְדֹ֥ת הֶחָצֵ֖ר סָבִֽיב	31		And the sockets of the court surrounding, and the sockets of the gate of the court, and all the tent pegs of the dwelling-place, and all the tent pegs of the court surrounding.	3c	4C	18 18
