1 Kings 19

Poor Jezebel. She does not make an imprecation as effectively as Solomon or Ruth.
1 Samuel 3:17  ...

She forgets to say 'to me' in the curse. All the translations add to me without comment. It is not there in the text as you can see for yourself. Jezebel is careful to protect herself even from her own curses of others. She doesn't even get the number of the verb right for Elohim. Her verb is plural. If the plural was for God, the verbs would be singular as they are in the other three examples.

Most translations render נפשׁ here as life. I reserve the gloss life, living etc for חיה. Yes I suppose it might mean life, but that is not what it says. Cadaver and throat fit fine here. More suitable to Jezebel's character I suspect.

It is a bit unfair to compare Elijah to Jonah, but he lay down, is equivalent to he was laid out. and I was tempted. He is more like a tired person who returns to bed after breakfast.

Verses 14 and 10 are identical. What do we say when there is a repetition? Look between the occurrences for the meat. In this case verses 11-13 elaborate the simple message of the last words of verse 9.

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done,
and that he had slain all, all the prophets by the sword.

2 And Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,
thus and thus gods do and add more, if by this time tomorrow, I have not set your cadaver as the cadaver of one of them.

3 And he saw, and he arose, and he went, for his own cadaver, and he came to Beer-Sheva (that of Judah),
and he left his lad there.

4 But he himself walked into the wilderness a day's journey and he came and sat under a specific juniper.
And he wished he was dead, and he said, Firmly, now, Yahweh, take, my cadaver, for I am not better than my ancestors.

5 And he lay down and he slept under a specific juniper,
and behold, this messenger touched against him, and he said to him, Arise. Eat.

6 And he took note, and behold, at his head, a pancake of tessellations, and a thin wafer of water,
and he ate and imbibed and returned, and he lay down.

7 And the messenger of Yahweh returned a second time and touched against him, and he said, Arise. Eat,
for too much for you is the journey.

8 And he arose and he ate and he imbibed,
and he went in the power of that food a forty day and forty night span, to the hill of the gods, Horeb.

9 And he came there to the cave and lodged there,
and behold, the word of Yahweh to him, and he said to him, Why are you here, Elijah?

10 And he said, Jealous. I was jealous for Yahweh the God of hosts. for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, your altars they have overthrown, and your prophets they have slain by the sword,
and I remain, I, only I, and they seek my throat to take it.

11 And he said, Go forth and stand on the hill in the presence of Yahweh. And behold Yahweh passed by, and a great and resolute wind rent hills and broke cliffs in the presence of Yahweh. Not in the wind, Yahweh.
And after the wind, a quake. Not in the quake, Yahweh.

12 And after the quake, a fire. Not in the fire, Yahweh.
And after the fire, a voice muted, finely ground.

13 And it happened as Elijah heard, and he clutched his face in his majestic cape, and came forth and stood in the opening of the cave,
and behold to him, a voice, and it said, Why are you here, Elijah?

15 And Yahweh said to him, Go. Return on your way toward the wilderness of Damascus,
and come and anoint Hazael to reign over Aram.

16 And Jehu child of Nimshi, you will anoint king over Israel,

17 And it will happen that one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will put to death,
and one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will put to death.

18 I will also leave a residue in Israel, seven thousand,
all the knees that have not bowed down to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.

19 And he went from there and found Elisha child of Shaphat, and he was ploughing twelve pair before him. And he was with the twelfth.
And Elijah passed through to him and flung his majestic cape to him.

20 So he forsook the oxen, and raced after Elijah, and said, Let me kiss, please, my father and my mother, that I may go after you.
And he said to him, Go. Return. But what have I done to you?

21 And he returned from behind him, and he took a pair of the oxen and sacrificed it. And with the instruments of the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave to the people, and they ate.
And he arose and he walked after Elijah, and ministered to him.
