Leviticus 15

In this chapter of Leviticus, I was laying out the puzzle pieces and I came across several changes required in chapters I had already 'done'. Again in each case, the pieces, as in a well made puzzle, now seem to fit a little better and have clearer colour than before. I have to say to myself, If it looks wrong, it probably is wrong. But often I can't see it till I get more information. And I don't know from which quarter the information will arise.

In this chapter, of all things, it is the woman's monthly period נדה that tipped me off to change the Nazirite section of Numbers. Then the setting apart of the woman, essentially segregation, showed me that I had misused this word in four places, Job 30, Proverbs 15 and 17, and Numbers 15. Segregation in time (postpone) may also be a possibility. Amos 6:3 seems to allow this sense. Right now postpone is an artificial hapax created by my glossing. Perhaps it will stand.

I said in my last post that 'we may finish', but when I 'finish', what then? Hopefully the analysis of artificial hapaxes will continue and their numbers will reduce. I will also continue to refine the semantic domain structure because this leads me to question why the homonyms occur in the Hebrew.

Re his / her / its, it is very clear that the male pronoun suffix in Hebrew, as in traditional English, doubles as the generic male or female suffix. The principal seems to be that the female is distinguished in speech only when the whole group or the individual is female or can only be female.

This chapter clearly divides into two sections re uncleanness / defilement of each sub-class of earthling. From now on and retroactively, when reading it / its etc assume inanimate or non-specific personal. When reading he / him / his etc assume whatever the context may allow. Re the pronoun used with Yahweh or God, I generally use the male pronoun and allow the personal inference.

My temporal power to make changes to our tongue is limited.

Status

In my reading project to date, I have read in Hebrew and writ in English 613 chapters. And I have therefore 316 remaining. This is a unique status, a circular status. Perhaps that is why there are 929 chapters. But who knows, I may discover I am still missing chapters in my data!

Status as of  2017-10-29 Chapters Verses Words
Completed 613 13,952 172,729
66.0% 60.1% 56.6%
In process 0.7% 9.8%
To do, excluding in process 316 9,091 102,736
39.2% 33.6%

Over 60% on chapters and verses and on guessed words. The individual puzzle pieces are words: 305,360 is the current count. Of these 202,624 are done or guessed within a sequence of τωο ορ μορε Hebrew words. Pieces I have not yet even got a guess for number 20,043, or 6.6%. With a puzzle this big, one leaves a few surprises. Even some that I think are this colour or that are really not so and some I have turned over I maybe should not have.

Don't let anyone tell you this corpus of literature is easy or perspicuous. But I expect it is worth the effort even if only for the linguistic puzzle. Humans are good at puzzles. The theological puzzle may become clearer. Who knows?

Genesis 20

I have never noted before that Sarah was reproved. This word is a keyword for the interpretation of the book of Job. (See Susannah Ticciati's book on Job.) JB says of these words in verse 16
וְאֵ֥ת כֹּ֖ל וְנֹכָֽחַת
that they resist translation. This is true. The atnah that precedes these words is in an unexpected place. The word יכח does not signify vindication pace NIV. A little reproof for the situation is surely due to Sarah.

Abraham appears here to have both a fearful and a resentful character. (Verse 13.) Is the half-sister relationship a reason that Sarah was barren?

Exodus 2

As often, when there is a real story in the text, it is not what I was expecting.

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לָֽרָשָׁ֔ע לָ֥מָּה תַכֶּ֖ה רֵעֶֽךָ
and he said to the one in the wrong [lit.wicked one], Why do you strike your associate?

Most think of this as a kinship relationship, and therefore a family squabble, but the word with its stem רעה is what is rendered as neighbour elsewhere (as well as a few other glosses like shepherd!) So the emphasis is not on the object that is struck but on the one who is doing the striking. Why do you strike your shepherd, your associate, etc... I.e. you are of the same wider family. You should know better. But it appears that Moses had not yet learned that the Egyptian was also an associate. It appears to be a long development from revelation to working out the patterns of non-exploitation and love that will appear based on the specific statement of Leviticus 19:18.

Leviticus 19 Fn Min Max Syll
לֹֽא־תִקֹּ֤ם וְלֹֽא־תִטֹּר֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ וְאָֽהַבְתָּ֥ לְרֵעֲךָ֖ כָּמ֑וֹךָ
אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֽה
18 You will not avenge, and you will not hold back with the children of your people, but you will love your associate as yourself.
I am Yahweh.
3e 4C 22
4
But even this great commandment in this context is still a local kinship policy where associate (trad. neighbour) is of the children of your people. It is not yet a call to universal care outside conventional familial boundaries.

You might remember I called Noah's boat a barge. Ark I reserved for the ark of the covenant. I couldn't put Moses in a barge. It would be hard to hide it in the rushes. So he is in a creel. You could say it is a very small barge.

There is a second well story here. The terminology is different from the servant of Abraham meeting Rebekah. Two separate words are used for whatever containers they used, and two separate terms for drawing שׁאב from the well or pulling up, דלה, the same letters as gateway. This pulling up is also in the Psalms (30:2). The word for water does not occur in this passage but is assumed. You might notice that I have not found synonyms in English for the multiple types of drawing from water that there are in Hebrew. That word draw is compromised, but I am stuck. It is of course used for drawing a bow, or a picture, or water, or just magnetic attraction. And there are few synonyms for it in English that I can find.

1 Samuel 11

What does the spirit do? Saul [Sheol, the grave] is a difficult character. His battle against the flesh (Amalek) is ambiguous. His name indicates that Yahweh is still the one who reigns even in deadly times.

Ezekiel 11

This is a bit more fun than Leviticus, so I choose from the middle of my list. The top is packed with chapters from Leviticus.

In spite of all my agonizing over words, much of this is quite straightforward.
Ezekiel 11 Fn Min Max Syll

Drinking and imbibing - a translation exercise

The first time one reads this corpus, one likely gets little from it. This is true also of the subtleties of reading in a tongue that is not one's own and one notes that the reading alters one's own tongue.

My rigidity may not make good sense in some cases. Suppose that two stems, e.g. שׁקה and שׁתה really are the same, but one is used in one way and the other complements it. Is it somewhat foolish to let them be forced into a separate stream of glosses? It is possible when the whole corpus has been studied, that one will realize they are so related and will allow them to overlap in the host language.

There may be other examples. But I haven't seen any yet that are as clear as this pair. Now why did I not know this before beginning to translate? Well - guess why. No one - not even a native speaker, knows this sort of thing at the beginning of a journey. That's not the way one learns a language. (There is a note about this one in Lambdin and in Gesenius.)

Here's a touch of exploration around my status re drink and imbibe. These are not exact synonyms in English, so the artifice of separating the glosses may give a nuance to a verse that it does not deserve. Equally well, if one uses the synonyms freely, one may still impose an intent onto the text that was unintended.

Here are my uses of English drink, drunk, imbibe. Which ones do I need to investigate?

שׁקה cupbearer(17), drank(1), drenched(1), drink(10), gave drink(6), give drink(6), gives drink(1), irrigate(4), irrigated(3), irrigating(1), letting drink(1), made drink(2), make drink(5), trough(1)
שׁתה beverage(2), drunk-(1), imbibe(94), imbibed(23), imbibers(3), imbibes(6), imbibing(18), let's party(1), parties(4), party(23), partying(7)
שׁכר -ards(1), became intoxicated(1), boozers(1), drunk(1), drunkard(1), drunken(1), intoxicated(8), intoxication(1), made intoxicated(1), make drunk(1), strong drink(15)

It is quite an amusing question. But seriously, imbibe does not mean make to drink, but irrigate in the transitive with a direct object has this sense. It looks as if there is a generally causative usage of שׁקה but not entirely since drink occurs as does imbibe in a normal intransitive sense without any requirement for external causation.

Drunk crept in to this list unexpectedly. Note the two in succession in Psalm 69. At the moment, based on these examples below, I don't see a need to change my decision.
